We wanted to stop in with brief updates and announcement.
Forms and submissions for the Community Video project as well as questions for the Town Hall are officially closed! Thank you to everyone who participated in these. We are eager to share what we have all been working on.
Entries to the Furry Musician's contest have also closed! You can follow their page for more updates on things on their page over at
Some of the FA staff will be at Fur The More this week to sell merch in the dealers room as well as host Dragoneer’s Celebration of Life on March 9th at 12pm EST.
REMINDER: The Celebration of Life is FREE to attend, you do not need to register for the con to be there. You will only need to register if you plan on visiting other areas of the convention outside of the Celebration.
That said, we have put together a profile badge for those that have stepped up to help or shown support through all this.
Requirements needed to qualify for the badge are to have done at least ONE of these things:
* Donated to the GFM
* Purchased merch Neer stickers or pins from the Shop
* Submitted art to the Community Video Project
* Sent in other media or stories for the Celebration of Life event
* Attend the Celebration of Life in person
* Attend the Celebration of Life virtually
* Volunteered/helped with the event (even if just online prep)

We cannot fully express how grateful we are to the community for all your help over these past few months. We would not be able to continue without all your help and support. We know this badge is a very small token in comparison to all you’ve done for the site but we hope it can convey our appreciation.
There will be another reminder for the event day of, so those who cannot attend in person can still stop by virtually if they’d like. It will be hosted on Sciggles’ Twitch account. We also still have items from Neer’s inventory that his mother asked us for assistance with selling, those will be posted in the next few weeks. Once we get through these last few hurdles we promise there won’t be so many posts and reminders on this. It’s been a loooong 7 months. Thank you guys for being so patient with us through this.

On an unrelated but exciting note, we're happy to officially release Display Names for FA+ members!
As part of our current approach to providing progress milestones for our development flow, we've also brewed up Display Names to act as a stop gap for renames. Renames is by far the #1 requested feature on FA after Tag Blocking. This, unfortunately, is not a full rename system due to infrastructure limitations, but we encourage you to stay tuned for future information regarding our next steps in that area!
Display Names are non-unique alternative names for your account.
FA+ members will have early access to this feature for a couple months to help us test the system and gather feedback so we can make it the best it can be for public release!

Current restrictions on naming are pretty straightforward:
* No hate speech or slurs.
* No NSFW content.
* Maximum of 30 characters and alphanumeric (for the time being.)
* Site policies still apply. (For example, impersonating other users/staff is not allowed.)
The Display Name field can be found on your Profile Info page. All changes will be logged and the last 10 Display Names will be publicly viewable. If you find any bugs or issues with display names please report them here: Display Name Feedback

FAQ
Q: Why are you paywalling a basic feature?
A: One of the perks of supporting the site with FA+ is getting to "beta test" new features. This will be pushed to public to all users as soon as any bugs are worked out!
Q: Why did you change how mobile looks? We prefer the previous design!
A: This was an unintended change! We are working with the tech team to get the layout style changed back while keeping the display names on them.
Q: Will there be a cooldown on changing display names?
A: There is a 24 hour cooldown currently!

The aim is the reduction of fires (trouble tickets and reports) in the first place. Not stamping out fires once people light the matches left out for them.
Also I think they've made a slight mistake already by forcing all of us to use a display name. I think they should have made it optional, so if you don't choose to have one, then you don't have one. Maybe they can do that when they do implement the ability to change usernames?

the thing is, they clearly rolled it out to everyone (notice how there's a display name to the left of my username) but only paying users are allowed to change it. even if this wasn't the case, i believe rolling out such an essential basic feature to paid members first all the while the platform is constantly getting backlash over making one bad decision after another really doesn't inspire confidence
The duplicated names is a bit odd to see, for sure.
in other terms, i wouldn't be (nearly as) annoyed if i didn't have access to a display name; i am annoyed because i'm forced to have a display name that is not what i want to be called, further making my followers think i go by a name i haven't used in years - which is something i've had a problem with on here for a long time, now only made worse by this

It's coming, we just need to wait a couple months more at most.
I say this as someone who is not paying for FA+. We've had to wait decades for it, we can wait a couple months 'til is rolled for everyone. The best we can do is to report bugs/glitches when we see them so when it comes for everyone, it comes well.
this isn't about me being annoyed over not having access to something fun because i'm unwilling to pay, it's about the fact that the implementation of this "beta test" is about to make my experience on here worse because my followers will even further be under the impression i go by a name i have not been comfortable with in years

I'd like to open this by expressing I completely understand what you're saying, and I think you're articulating it just fine. I'm trying to reframe it only in hopes it'll help those that may not really get why your point is important, because I agree that it is important! (I may still miss the mark, but I'll do my best! 🙏)
Picture it: New York: 2025
• My legal name is John.
• Recently I've decided I prefer to be called Jim.
• Work has ordered newly designed name tags, but until I can legally change my name, my new tag will say John.
• Since the design is brand new, and the full context of my having to wait until I can legally change my name isn't apparent, it could be fairly assumed I still like to be called John.
Until the feature is rolled out to everyone, I think a good solution would be to make the default option no display name unless the person has entered something aside from their default username. (If that makes sense.)
So instead of
Mottenfest ~Mottenfest
It's just, well, Mottenfest.

I am honestly happy to see features being rolled out, and look forward to offering my feedback as an old man that's used FA long I'm basically mummified.
Like when you remove a submission, wouldn't the counter drop to reflect removed favourites by others on deleted submission? Like if you deleted your gallery the fave coounter would be 0.
I recall Neer told me in PM that the system did an auto update but he needed to sync my accounts manually.

They seem to be defaulting to selecting the checkbox, and the only way to open them is to hold and open in a new tab. Confirmed on a friend's device too.
Oh man it's like this on desktop too, can only right click open journals, etc.
It FEELS intentional, and if so, I hope they revert it, I find it rather inconvenient…

On another note, I would like the ability to truly change my username to be added. This is a feature that just about every other site has except this one.

It's "paywalled" for now for beta testing. It says it'll be released eventually to everyone.

Also as a way to tempt more people to pay for FA+ in the future I think it would be best to give them a larger amount of times to change their username. I'd play it by ear with the display names to see how often people actually change it not only during this testing phase but when it rolled out for all users. If people only ever change it once or twice a year then that's all you really need to give to free users to avoid complaints (plus you'd have evidence to back up the decision), and can just choose a random larger number for FA+ members.
And please don't let the people complaining so far in this journal, get your down. They're kind of being poop heads who either didn't actually read the journal, or just have a blind dislike for all of you because of old grudges. So far you've all shown tremendous growth of trying to move forward and fix the mistakes of the past. So thank you for that.
We are here to listen to feedback and make this better, however comments like this do not help to achieve that goal.
That was not an intended change and we brought it up with tech team, we are looking into how we can get this changed back for mobile! Sorry about that!
In cases of large quantities of any one thing seen on your submissions page; it allows for quick destruction to clear your notifications!
Classic has been sunset, they will not be updating it.
And yeah you cant click a persons name link anymore when they show "(Username) liked your submission" and cant click their username link anymore

I figured that the image might be wrong, since the last time you had a one-year plan, back in December of 2022, it was only $50 for a year.
The current image for the one-year plan says it is $60, even though I suspected it might actually be $50. So, I decided to add FA+ to my secondary account again, and see what it would actually charge. It indeed charged only $50 to my PayPal, so, you might want to fix the image to say $50, instead of $60. (unless it's actually supposed to be charging $60 for a year - in which case, there'd be little incentive for anyone pay for a year ahead.)

Having another display name after so many years of waiting makes me feels so much better! \O/
I can live with having another "handle" and wait for the possibility to change that one in some months.
I actually prefer the display name option more than a total name-change because it could be harder to track down people if they change their names!
I should add that one should keep using usernames when they mention other users or it probably won't work. You can't do "@Pheagle Adler" or ":iconPheagle Adler:" to refer to me, for example.
That said, I'm not sure why we're choosing to make usernames have a similar visibility as display names? Might be better as a tooltip or dropdown item.
Your username is what is attached to your account and is still needed for linking purposes.
Jokes aside, it's good to finally get the Ability to have alternative usernames.

From what I’ve read in other comments, I’m a bit sad to hear that the FurAffinity Classic view won’t receive future updates. I’ve always preferred that layout, and I know many others feel the same. If there’s ever a chance for a final update or some level of support for it, I’m sure it would make a lot of us very happy.
Also, I’ve filled out the form, hoping that the piece I submitted can make it into the memorial. I’ll do my best to be online for the stream.

Yeah I have missed a lot of news cause of work, but I do appreciate the update, I will try to move to the modern look and see how I can adapt.
I personally like that the text is readable on monitors that have higher resolutions than 800x600; it's why I switched the MOMENT it came out. And the fact that there is a mobile mode instead of constantly needing to zoom
Also it's super easy to add a tag to the blocklist, just gotta press the + icon (in a lot os sites you need to go all the way into settings to add a tag to the blacklist)
I also have a genuine question.
Will be there a system or some warnings(kind of) regarding impersonating /same-name scam accs since it may make easier to trick members having a similar nickname as original poster?
I know about OP tag but still people are going through those scams so really interested about this

no metaphors or anything here, i hate it when people use actual stuff as metaphors. like, oh you know, intentionally pairing classic mode with "the old furries" now that Mark M. and the gang bit the dust. maybe you're not but I'm hearing it around and its bs. its just a bunch of rectangles for crying out loud, leave it alone. I don't care if classic mode gets the new features or not, in fact I'd rather it doesn't. What I want- ALL I want here -is for the setting in the Account Settings tab to make my view of the site look exactly as it has since I joined to still be there and function as it currently does, preferably minus the doofy two names next to each other thing. Just don't knock down my tree, so to speak. That's all.
coming up on 15 years on this site in September. That's half my entire life minus a year come November. it started everything for me, the best parts of me are because of what I experienced through this site. the worst are from losing what i had. I'm only bitter because I don't want my home ripped out from under me and turned into a big bland gray shopping mall full of verizon stores, mattress firms and nothing else. You understand.

While languages that use Latin alphabet are easy to read and understand, non-Latin ones are a bit tricky :3

Display names is the stopgap measure in the meantime. A similar styling to BlueSky and Twitter.
Maybe give them out as APK or on the Altstore, but unsure if it'll be worth it
Also I feel bad that most sites switch to this weird tag system similar to twitter. Like, why not just make a full usable nickname to use everywhere? Discord had a great solution to this, up to 10000 of the same unique nicknames, now even they switched to the new "trend"

Onto something real: It looks cluttered to have the names repeat twice with people whos display name is the same as their username, perhaps the display name could be not displayed if they are identical!
Also the two names appear to be separately clickable which is a bit weird, it should be a single clickable element instead and highlight both on hover.
And to everyone complaining about it being "paywalled", it's only a temporary paywall as, like the journal says, it's basically a beta best that FA+ users are getting first. We just have to be patient to make sure that everything works correctly before it goes public to everyone.
Just to cut back on redundancy. (Example: "41262816 ~41262816" -> just "~41262816")
Or would that, like, break everything?...the same goes for the option to blur submissions of those who are blocked by/blocking someone.
Heck, there are people out there comparing the blocking thing to the doctrine of Mutually Assured Destruction!
I never plan on changing my name, because of brand recognition and such, but it's great to hear that people who may feel like their original names are a bit cringey will be able to change them.
For site/community badges on your profile page there currently isn't a way for users to hide those on their own but if you file a ticket we could hide ones you don't want shown for you. We are working on a way for users to be able to show/hide the ones they want on their end.

Twitter and Bluesky also offer display names. People can put nicknames there or say which cons they will be at next with them.
And super easy to scam now... if a artist was known as Bob for years and now has the Display name Kevin.... I see it as Bob Kevin now? ... So someone just needs to make an accound named Kevin and take the display name Bob.... and now have fun to always check if Bob Kevin is writing you or Kevin Bob and who is the real one and if the 1. or 2. name is display....
And for everyone not needing a Display name you just have dobble names now .. but one has capital letters and the other has not so.. looks super strange and confusing to me as well...

Go to your username in the top right, click on "Your impact"
Scroll down and click on "Your donations"
There should be a button called "Receipt" next to the Furaffinity GFM. Click on that and take a screenshot of the resulting page.

When tagging an user, eg. crediting the artist in a submission, and only remembering the display name, you could tag [at]display name. Not being unique, if there's multiple identical display names, system would suggest all usernames carrying said display name. Could also be useful in busting impersonators.
It will stay after FA+ expires. I don't believe we have plans to remove anything after FA+ falls off, unless the feature especially requires it (like dropping the expanded limits on uploads and such).
Or if its possible a badge that shows your og name on mouseover?
The name change? That’s a breath of fresh air. I can’t stand my current username, so I’m counting the days till the beta wraps up. FA+ sounds cool and all, but life’s a bit messy right now, so I’ll just have to sit tight and wait it out XD

That aside, this is awesome and exciting! <3 Would it be possible though that if no display name is set, only the username is shown? Right now it's a bit messy/cluttered with it having the username shown twice. (It'd be especially fab if this could be applied to the Classic layout too!)
It looks like it's easier to see the difference between the display and usernames on the Modern layout, but on Classic they're shown in the same font/size - would it be possible to differentiate them somehow (maybe "Displayname (Username)"? I understand the Classic layout isn't being updated actively any more but it'd be nice if a tiny exception could be made for this one small thing - I just ask since right now it's harder to tell which one IS the username, which could be confusing for knowing which name to link, etc. No biggie if it's not possible but figured I'd suggest it just in case! :)
Also, for changing names in the future,do you plan the url of the old name to still redirect to a new changed name profile? This is a good thing to deter scamming and people trying to avoid accountability for whatever reason. (Also name hijackers for people trying to scam Impersonating someone who changed name)

While this is all good and dandy, and a very over asked for feature from you guys... how about also working on the fact that your site also doesn't like to cooperate with certain browsers? Especially ones like Opera GX - this is becoming a more and more used browser, and yet with using it: buttons disappear on profiles behind the banners, even if they aren't hidden - you still can't click on them because it reads you clicking back on the banner to go back to the opening page.I literally made a report to the support system to get answers, which took me @'ing you guys on Twitter (2 times actually) - hate using that site but regardless, I waited a good while to even remotely get an a answer... and even then the support staff only told me 'well we'll look into it in future endeavors'.Like fantastic, we can have a sub name/nickname similar to what Facebook does. While I'm sure we appreciate you guys trying to keep the website up and hold it to a certain standard, and you guys can only do so much because you are human not machines... this site has been in dire need for changes for a LONG time... more than just giving us an extra name, since we can't just outright change the name entirely.I would definitely put another ticket in if you're still having trouble with it. And I'm curious if other browsers have issues too. Edge, Safari, Firefox, Chrome?
I only suggested a new ticket because they've had new staff somewhat recently. And the squeaky wheel does get the grease.
I think I'm gonna look into this issue myself by dowloading Opera GX. Will respond with my experience when I do.

That, as a digital creature, much like this digital forum of digital age furries, death isn't the end for who he was or what he meant to people. Display names is long overdue though, I think last time I heard about them coming soon was at least decade ago. A lot of stuff seem to end up long term shelved from back then.

I'm concerned that changing a user name would invalidate all the links and contact info that other people have saved. I would like, and it seems to me that, it would be good if the site could remember old user names and link them to the page for the new name. The old name wouldn't be displayed or searched for partial matches, but I could still find that artist I bought something from 10 years ago and have no other contact info than their then FA name.
Old user names need to be saved by the site so that someone can't grab an abandoned name and use it to impersonate. That wouldn't require keeping information linking the old and the new name. A record of the change would be useful to admins if there were a legal or emergency request to identify an old name. (People could argue that having the ability to comply with such a request is bad; I'm not going to argue for or against that, I just mention that I did think of it.)

There is one very small issue that's probably a "me" thing that very few other people care about. But is there any chance of reverting the "users who favorited this submission" list which is accessed by clicking the fave count on a submission? I personally find the varying line-length of the center-aligned alphabetical list to be harder to read than its previous state.
I do have a problem with users blocking for minor or even unknown offenses, but I'm also just not sure how it's an issue if someone watches you but can't interact.
maybe I just want somebody to forget about me by silently removing myself by blocking and unblocking
people using watchbots - they just litter the watcher list - I actually asked one nicely and they refused to remove me, why can't I do it myself, it's my watcher list after all
people who turned into enemies - why would they still stalk then? just to create discomfort, perhaps. there are shitty people out there you know
watchers who at closer inspection are obvious thieves and may watch just to trace, not to mention people who would steal art out of spite, maybe they wouldn't be bothered if they had to create at accounts just to watch their victim
