I need help to get a new PC
Hello everyone, I need a bit of help, I'm a bit stucked with my old PC here, unfortunately.
I'm not really used to ask things like this, but I desperately need a new laptop, PC, whatever works. My keyboard stopped working and I'm still using a 15 year old, maybe way older, idk to be honest.
In order to keep drawing by bringing you new content and commissions. I wanna repair at least the keyboard and the battery. However, paying house bills, my diabetes meds and helping Mom makes it almost impossible.
I'd appreciate a lot your support whether be on Patreon or with my t-shirt content.
I'm not looking for tips though. I do art for a living, so whatever item purchased or supporting a tier on Patreon it helps a lot.
You can always send me a message via telegram to crocoloops

If buying new, you're likely looking at around 24,700 to 36,400 pesos to get something with a 15 to 16" screen, 1TB NVme or more drive, a CPU about twice or more what you had, and at least 16GB RAM. Modern laptops won't have a CD/DVD drive anymore. Something to consider though; off-lease business laptops.
In both the US and Canada, it's very common to find re-sellers that deal in off-lease business equipment. With these, you can usually find 3 to 5 year old business laptops (Dell's Latitude series or Precision series, HP's Elite books, Lenovo's Thinkpads, etc.) for way, way cheaper than retail. You may need to get a new battery for them, but often these can be a way to get into a pretty powerful and reliable machine for half to a quarter the price of a new one. You do have to be careful though with what you intend to do with it. For example, if you are needing to run Windows on it, then you want to buy something that is capable of running Windows 11, which means the CPU has to be pretty recent (about 5 years old or less) and it has to have TPM 2.0 module in the BIOS for security. Some older systems won't have this. For example, I writing this on an i7-8700 portable workstation, which is fairly modern, but too old to meet Microsoft's silly standards for Windows 11. If you don't run Windows (which I don't) then who cares, but if you do, you want to make sure you're not stuck when Windows 10 becomes unsupported/dead in October of this year.
Did you have any particular brand preference or budget or things I can help narrow some choices down with?
**I've heard Ryzen is better than Intel and is more economic, is that true?**
I was thinking of getting MSI, ASUS or Lenovo. For HP, I feel like they stopped making good computers, or that's what I feel xD
Also I truly prefer a new equipment because of the warranty and because I want it new, I don't trust on used machine except for videogames (I don't really care on those anymore xd) . About the price range, I could really go higher but that'd depend on my savings, I really really wish I had an MSI Raider or a ROG STRIX SCAR, if I go fancy, I'd need one with good sound and alphanumeric keyboard, because I do a lot of accountant with my bf business.
If you want good sound in a laptop, Apple is the only one I know of that have speakers that are more than just "it's passable". But if that's out of your price range, or you want Windows, know that you might need to buy a bluetooth speaker or something if you have high audio standards. If sound is important to you, make sure you go out and test the laptop personally in a store or something, so you know what they sound like. A lot of laptops have all these brand names and technologies thrown around to make them seem like they have god-tier speakers, but still sound like trash in reality.
If you want an alphanumeric keyboard you'll need to get a 16 inch or bigger. Smaller ones don't have enough space to fit the numpad. But that means it'll be larger, heavier and more expensive. If that's something you want to avoid then know that you can always buy a USB numpad to plugin.
And yeah, I would definitely recommend AVOIDING HP. Currently they're the industry "black sheep" both because of their scummy behavior with printers, and because of how their computer hardware tends to be designed to be horribly anti-repair. Their "professional" line of PCs is still somewhat okay, but for that price you're much better off going with some other brand like Lenovo.
Yeah, HP is definitely not what they used to be for quality. MSI, Asus, & Lenovo are good choices. Dell's upper-end business class stuff is good, but pricey. There are other unique options like System76's unique and very customizable systems, but if you want Windows you'd have to get it and install yourself (they come with Linux).
As for Ryzen CPUs, yes, they are an excellent choice. Intel's product has been pretty dated for a while now, and while a safe choice, they are not really the better CPU these days. The last two X86 systems I've gotten have been Ryzen-based and they have been fantastic. Recently, I just got a Lenovo Thinkpad P14s Gen5 which has a Ryzen 7 Pro. Got this to replace a 10+ year old ultra book, got it on a Lenovo sale for about $1400 Cdn late last year. They have versions of it with 15 and 16" screens which might be more of what you're looking for. Came with Windows 11 Pro, though I formatted it and put Mint Linux on it.
The only thing you have to be careful of now is where the laptop is sourced from; you definitely want to get something shipped directly rather than through the US otherwise you could get nailed by their ridiculous tariff war.
Something like this: https://amazn.so/xlKmDvv
And if no model you can afford has feet to elevate it above the keyboard underneath, you can buy this: https://amazn.so/Rjiodw2
Best of luck
Also, if needed: Based on what I read from your journal and in the comment with someone else, you would need something that at minimum matches the following hardware specs:
RAM: 16 GB
Storage: 1 TB (go for SSD if you can, it will just be faster overall, but HDD is still usefull)
CPU: Intel Core i5 2.30 GHz Processor
GPU: Nvidia Geforce GTX 1050 Graphics card
All of this is fairly old. Like this was high-end 8-10 years ago, but it is mid- to low-end now. This setup can still play most recent games on mid to low settings (Think satisfactory, Anno 1800, FF14 or Warframe), so it will be able to handle a lot of various programs for both business and media creation.
In case you may not know: You can compare hardware on this website: https://www.userbenchmark.com/
Compare the stats of the laptops you will be looking to buy with either the hardware I mentioned or your old laptop stats (mainly only CPU and GPU matters here). Aiming for the closest matches and you should be able to narrow down to older and hopefully cheaper options.
Final tip: Call stores and ask them if they have older models still in storage that are willing to sell you with full warrenty. Maybe you can get lucky and score something good.
Again, best of luck.
