I like the idea of being able to change the displayed name of my account, but I did not care for the Modern webpage style, which was necessary to change it.
However, if you, like me, prefer the classic layout, there is a way to change the display name.
Step 1: Change to the Modern style.
Step 2: Change your display name.
Step 3: Change back to the Classic style.
Voila! You have changed your display name, and can still use the Classic style.
Yes, it's a bit involved, but how often do you have to do it?

Site Layout Theme > Template: Modern
Save Changes: Enter password at bottom.
Customize My User Profile > User Page & Profile > Account Personalization > Display Name
Update Profile Information (at the bottom)
Account Settings > Sit Layout/Theme > Template: Classic
Save Changes: Enter password at bottom
Voila.
Like I said, involved, but possible.
I've been following the upgrades saga (using Comic Neue font now!) and they kept saying you can only access these things via the new lay-out, because Classic Style was being sunsetted and was no longer receiving updates. It's good to know you figured out a simple work-around!
