Hey there fuzzies! Update for all of you comin in hot!
To read up on the "how we got here" you can find it in our previous announcement!
We are at about 75% in our process, given there are extra steps involved at this point it may be a bit harder/fuzzier getting an accurate percentage but we will still be doing our best to give updates on our socials!
We posted this onto our socials last night for those wondering if there are things they could do to assist, and it may seem like something small, but it does add up over time!

After getting a lot of feedback on "The Great Notification Purge of 2025"we are bringing these ideas to the table to see if there is something that we can do in regards to:
▪️Regular automated 6 months or older purge of notifications (was previously mentioned to be implemented in 2019 at year old notifications but not followed through on)
▪️Looking into ways of organizing our notification system better, like by artist, oldest/newest, and possibly category types (writing, audio, visual, etc)
▪️Looking into abandoned zero content account clean ups (It would not apply to accounts that have comments, faves, profile info, are active, etc!)
▪️Folders in favorites for better organizing
This doesn't mean we can easily implement or WILL implement all of these things but they are up for discussion and we greatly appreciate all your help and hope you all continue to help with notification clean ups while we sort on our end as well! Notifications are not the reason this all happened. It is just something that, at this time, users can assist us with to make some extra space for things we need to do. This is absolutely something that should have already been in place on our end, but with the recent updates and changes we’ve been making to the site we are absolutely making sure this one gets followed through on this time around!
We are also looking to expand our storage once this is done. Fret not, we have been preparing for something like this, it just came sooner than anticipated! We already have funding in place 💖But if you would like to send any extra support or some love to our tech crew you can do so via Fender shinies or our ko-fi link!
Thanks for hanging tight with us! We appreciate you all 💖

"Michael Rothery's - Turncoat" plays in the background as ticking can be heard.
I've wanted this forever for FA, its the one thing I miss from Deviant Art
Gotta be able to find my fav vore art quickly!
"orbs"
"everything else"

I think it would be great if we could mark some people we watch as "favorites" or something similar, so their submissions would always appear at the top, no matter when they are posted.
This would be a very welcome change. There are many accounts that have names people would like to use but are sitting dormant and unused for a long time
That said, if they do add folders to our favorite like suggested in the post, it could be a nice replacement!
So yeah, our few isn't the problem, but it's a weirdly common thing to never clear watches/faves/comments/new subs, apparently.
I FORGOT ABOUT NOTIFICATION 12564
I ALMOST DELETED THE SECRET ARTIFACT OF ELD
So just hanging on for the fun to continue
although if it is something that affects you I could clean it c:
3rd time is a charm I guess!
In all seriousness, thank you for doing your best to keep this place running well!
In all seriousness, thank you for doing your best to keep this place running well!
It's very rare that it's more than 2 notifications at a time and it usually doesn't last more than 2 weeks too, until I take the time.
So I'm baffled to see that there are people who keep all their watch notifications they ever get, especially since you can access your watch list on your profile.
My standing advice when you have a backlog, is to set up a procedure that makes sure you are getting more than a day's worth cleared every day. A simple one is to work with the oldest and each day you just need to cross three Noons and midnights, (e.g. if the oldest was from 11:13PM Jan 15th, you have to get past midnight that night, noon on the 16th and through midnight on the 16th). The secret is to not make the requirement hard, but just enough that you will move in the right direction, (and if you get through two or three more reference points? give yourself a "good job").
And then you got those people that make it a guinness world record. Because they can.
For me it's not the watches, favorites, or comments, or even journals that build up - though they can sometimes as well, it's usually less than 1k notifications total. But for me it's the submissions inbox - I'm watching thousands of people after being on this site for almost 20 years, and I can easily hit 10k notifications within a week or two if I'm not spending a decent amount of time every day looking at them. And I'm notoriously terrible at social media and frequently do not look at FA for 1 - 2 weeks at a time, sometimes longer. At one point I didn't look at FA for around six months and when I came back I had 300k+ images in my inbox. I get very stubborn about nuking them, too, I always tell myself that THIS time I'll catch up with them, but realistically I do not have/make a lot of time to look at art or social media in general, and I inevitably end up nuking it every time without looking at even a quarter of the posts, if that. Part of the problem is that, after 20 years with my own art and tastes changing so much, I'm simply no longer interested in many of the artists I follow, some of whom are very prolific, so I end up with, I would guess, about 50% of my inbox being art I'm not interested in. So it takes a long time to dig through my inbox when I DO look at stuff, because it's hard to find things I actually want to look at for more than just a thumbnail. I end up flipping through stuff very quickly and just going 'like that, fave, nope, close tab, scroll down 50 submissions before I find one I want, etc' without actually really paying much attention to what I'm looking at, just because I'm trying to speedrun my giant inbox. I've been working on unwatching artists I'm no longer interested in, but it's time consuming too. Last year I spent some time combing through my watch list and trying to remove all the dead accounts and artists I don't care for, but I only made it to about the mid Cs before losing my place and giving up. So now it's just piecemeal through finding art I don't want in my inbox.
A feature I would like is if, when you unwatch an artist, all their art disappears from your inbox automatically. It's very frustrating to unwatch an artist who is say, not only posting content I don't want, but spamming it, and have several pages of my inbox be full of their art, and it just stays there even after I unwatch them so I have to keep digging through all this art I don't care for. It would significantly cut down on how long I have to spend looking through my inbox.
The ability to sort notifications by submission category sounds great too - sorting out sale/YCH/advert posts would be even more useful than sorting by art/music/writing for me, since I don't follow almost any musicians or writers (can't devote the time to consuming their media) but my inbox is often clogged with advertisements but it's also hard to find the ones I'm interested in when I do have money to burn. I think that might also have the side effect of more people getting reported when breaking the rules about posting advertisements, since users could more easily see how frequently artists are posting ads, whether they're repeating them over and over, etc. I know a LOT of people ignore the rules about what ads to post and how often, so I think that could also help cut down on notifications - if the same artist is posting 5 repeating ads a day to their 13k watchers, that's 65k notifications going out right there, when it should only be 13k, and if they're a repeat offender (which people who break the rules generally are) it's even worse, and it's nothing to sneeze at.
You're watching around the same number of people I am, so either you're way more religious about checking FA than I am, or you're only following mostly dead accounts and artists who don't post often - there's no way I can reasonably keep up with my notifications with the amount of time I'm able to devote to FA. I used to check FA multiple times a day every day so maybe going back to that is the answer instead of having to nuke once a week X)
Folders in Favorites does sound nice. I would also like to see a search bar added to favorites.
Also I'm always cleaning up my notifs so if this may help I'm happy :P
That being said if you like seeing number go up in your notifications, may I recommend playing Balatro instead? :P

Really puts things into perspective how much furry porn is uploaded to this site.
And if you're still worried, toss up a journal about something. If you need a topic: Things you like but don't see enough of.
Quite a few drawings to upload... best of luck!
It would be nice to see new tools implemented. And it would probably do the site good to have notifications that clear themselves after a certain amount of time. Fully support
every oldest object in your faves, journals, submissions get yeeted from your notifications
expiring notifications is also a good approach i think
notes should not be deleted
anyway
THANK U ALL SO MUCH FOR UR HARD WORK
BLESSINGS AND KISSES TO U ALL
Also 200 is way to low. Lol I often see 250 to 400 submissions in my inbox every day.
because...
yeah several hundrets of arts get uploaded hourly
a 200 cap is ridiculously silly teehee
It might be too complex to add in but maybe an 'advertisements' or 'temporary' category that also requires the submitter to choose an end date when the post will be deleted? For things like ych ads, stream ads and the like? I'm sure theres a load of old ych reminder ads for things that are well past (i know i have a few in my scraps i need to delete) Not a fix for old content but could help going forward?
I personally would like it if there was a way to filter out adopts and reminders as their own section. As it is now, they can easily over take submissions by relatively much lower activity accounts, like myself.
I say that because I've had comments on my most recent submission saying that it is the last post that isn't adopt/reminder/YCH related. And I agree.
See for yourselves.
Some artists post the same YCH reminder 3 or 4 times a day and it's obnoxious.
Sometimes it's just that they genuinely did not understand the rule. We will be happy to help clarify.
Itaku has this system & it works very well without removing visibility from original artworks. Plus many YCH / adopt artists don't tag their reminders as such. It's really getting on my nerves to still have my homepage flooded with ads when they are supposed to be blacklisted.
Of course, that's if it's implemented.
Hope this helps!
and assuming something like a "browse art by people you follow (by newest)" tab ever gets implemented (like what DA has now) then yeah i feel like a notif auto clear has zero downsides lmfao.
folders in favorites is also just a Nice thing to have no matter what, everything else sounds fine to me
Automated purge of 6 months old notifications is a nice change, notification organizing would help out navigating notifications, cleaning up abandoned accounts would give people the chance to get accounts with names they want, and lastly folders in favorites would make it much easier to save things you might not wanna lose inside your favorites!
Though it saddens me to see my notifications cleared (I like to see the number grow as my time on here continues), it's very much understandable
that and i heavily second the cleanup of 0 content accounts, as long as they can be provably 0 content and haven't had any recent logins/interactions so that other lurkers don't evaporate on the spot
Maybe not 6 months (as people take breaks from the fandom every once in a while), but 1 year sounds reasonable.
If not for all users, maybe at least for inactive/dormant accounts.
HOWEVER BIG YES on folders in favorites, oh my gods yes I need that ASAP. xD
I'm clearing them now lmfao
He's seriously made some really great, and it would be amazing to see it made official. Please get in touch with him!
This may course cause some stress to the server if many do that at once, but may be helpful.
I get the need to keep the database from filling with rubbish. But maybe target the cleanup code to ignore people with fewer than 50 notifications or something?
Would be greatly appreciated if this didn't ever happen!
If this is actualy just about journels or comments that matters alot less and wouldan't mind as much.
I'm most definitely not in the millions, but I didn't know it took up space and it's kind of become a thing over the years to see the numbers slowly go up ^^
[Auto-purge or delete after] quarterly, monthly, weekly, daily, never [we wish you wouldn't, but understand if you must], and a checkbox to protect individual notifications from manual or automatic bulk purges.
I'm really really really REALLY hoping for the favorites folders. That's something I've wanted for the better part of a decade now X3
Also, I think maybe implementing a birthday notification for watched users would be a neat idea, you could put your birthday in and you'll be notified if it's the user's birthday! Or have options for turning it off.
Or being notified if a watched user changes their username handle? There were some people I was watching who changed their handles and I had to go try to figure out who they were. ^^;
Also agree with giving some kind of notice that usernames have changed but not entirely worked out yet.
I think a good idea however would be an option to enable if you want to receive birthday notifications from watched users. Some people +watch a ton of people so getting birthday notifications every day may get a bit overwhelming after a while haha.
I support the automated purging. Granted I try to never let it build up anyway.
If we are on the topic of improving things: it'd be awesome to get a 3 star fave system, or a "like, Fav, Love!" thing going on. Would really help general feedback, but I understand it would bloat the data required to fave by two thirds. At least it would fit well into a fave folder system where you could sort by what someone likes, faves, and loves!
Because if someone who just wants to keep their notifications because "number go UP" marks them all to keep; we're back at square one.
Also fav folders sound great!
But good luck with whatever you do, definitely a good idea to try and help de-clog FA, and help clear it up in the future.
The thread on Bluesky is... scary...
And frankly that makes no sense to me. Why do you have to keep your notifications? You can favorite submissions, and if you don't want to favorite something, you can watch an artist and go to their gallery and look at it there. What is the rationale for needing 10k+ submission notifications that you can't organize in any way?
sounds good but can get the option to save them if we want to?

*Notices you are a sheep named Drake...talking to a drake/dragon dressed as sheep* 0.=.0 What are the odds, lol!
I hate to bring up e6 again but their popular page is a godsend for finding new and A tier artists.
FA NEEDS something like this and it's astonishing how this wasn't implemented eons ago.
I should say that with e6 it's most popular for the day. The upvotes/downvotes on the submissions would sort them accordingly but I'm aware that there is no like system here but you could easily use favorites/views instead.
If folders in favs ever get implemented I can see users having their own 'featured' favorite to help boost their fav artists to others! Additionally, some tweaks to our User Profile where we have 'favorite artist' could be more visible as a way to boost more.
I'll put my agreement on abandoned accounts with no content that haven't been longed into for years should be removed to clear up space and names. Provided account holders are given a few emails to warn that will be the case on the off chance they decide to come back.
Folder in favs are deff a please! I miss organizing them back on DA so much ;-;
On another note, I hope Sciggles and the team are doing alright! Y'all been working really hard [esp these last few days] and I just wanted to put out my own thanks in trying to be more open and transparent going forward with FA. It's really a nice change of pace and I hope y'all keep it up despite some people aiming their frustrations how things were before at y'all like you were always at the helm. It can't imagine how hard and frustrating it's been, but y'all have been handing it like champs!
I'm just thinking about how many artists are spamming my inbox still with "HAY REMEMBER I HAVE THIS THING STILL! I KNOW MOST OF YOU CAN'T AFFORD IT RIGHT NOW BUT PLEASE REMEMBER I HAVE THIS!" regularly Even as I keep deleting them, it's what fills up my inbox the most. I mean I get it, they're trying to make a living and advertising is the way to do it, but I bet it's not helping as one person can suddenly fill up a bunch of space.
I believe this was abandoned before after an initial allowance of reassignment of seemingly empty accounts, as mods cannot see if an account has notes, raising privacy concerns.
A favourite folder would be a game changer, seriously. Simply imagine going through your huge fav list and being able to sort it ALL!
Oh and if you are to implement the "notif begone by 6th month or older" please make it opt in / out in the settings. I know it could be hugely helpful but for someone who already clears their tab every now and then, I'd like to keep that control :)
Thank y'all again for the hard work!
I THINK it was Art Fight that also had to nuke everyones built up notifs one year? At least I think it was there, could be wrong.
I can only imagine cleaning up those and inactive/empty accounts would also free some much needed space.
(I think it would be worth making sure the empty account isn't a lurking/active account somehow though)
I personally don't care and clean mine from time to time, but from what I can see some people use them for tracking stuff, so they're useful.
I like this idea!
So it's probably not a big deal if they do end up going in a future update.
Congrats to the FA team!
Also, is the Vaporeon out of the server yet? If not, let him out to cool off, then put him back in when Submissions open back up to keep the server from exploding.
Currently, finding anything older than the newest 10 is a pain. Make a note system that can be searched, with sorting by date/username in both direction.
And more notes at once.
That way, users could more easily find old/unneeded notes to delete to free up space. No one is gonna click on "older" 40 times just to find the old ones that are not needed any more.
If notifications use up a lot of space, I bet notes do as well.
Also I hope notes aren't involved in the automatic notification purge because then 6 months would be far too little. A commission can take that long
(the note system is so bad that I made my own offline FA note reader a long while back. Didn't keep it updated tho as you sadly have no API and I had to skim the HTML and that regularly breaks and one time I just didn't care any more)
Second being "folders for favorites."
Not having any social media, I haven't kept up with the details of whatever went down with NFS etc. and I'm curious about the details of what went down.
Goodbye 162k new submissions and 10k new journals, it seems
I love just hoarding stuff for no particular reason
"Looking into abandoned zero content account clean ups" good step... and how about the mostly asked thing: blacklist to user/content watcher removal option?
Also, assuming there's a way to check last login/browsing activity from truly abandoned accounts (no content, and no login/browsing for a year+), delete them. Even if not, something as simple as having people post a comment to a news post like this should be enough, if they actually have no watches/favs/etc.
Like the "<< < 1 2 3 > >>" Buttons.
In the past you could at least edit the url to jump to the pages but nowadays the url is like
https://www.furaffinity.net/favorites/user/long number/next?
Literally never going to catch up even on a month's worth of those. Maybe instead of just a hard limit by time, also some total max number as well.
I'm getting around 100k/yr and the very large portion of submissions notifications are expirable temporary content. A lot of notifications could be removed by having a new upload type for that content that self-destructs rather than remains forever. Whenever I check my new submissions, at least half essentially spam for YCH, WIP, reminders, unrelated content using image uploads for greater visibility, etc.
Suddenly I don't feel as bad about mine... xD
Which sounds like a lot considering the whole FA holds...
How many postsm again?
60 million?
A past life event got me way behind, and just have no time or energy to delete properly (if the "nuke leaves phantom submission notification bug" still exists).
I might be the minority here, but I almost always try to keep my notifications at 0.
But Folders to better organize works too...
we are much closer to having everything working!.
All the support, a big hug! 🤗
As it is now, I sometimes get several at a time that tend to blend together, and it soon becomes hard to manage. I also would love to see a separate category specifically for YCH uploads. They get uploaded with high frequency, and it'd be better for users searching to find something to commission without the hassle of coming up with ideas.
I will do what I can these next few days to slim down my notifications, but an auto-deleting one feels very bad if it is done too soon, esp to those who can't always afford to be on and cycling things consistently. If the favorites section can be organized then it'd probably make it easier, but mass faving stuff to avoid losing it to autodeletion is frustrating.
This is just my opinion on things, and there's always other stuff that can be done. Hope we can soon get back to things being normal, keep up the good work
At this point, nuking all notifs is like erasing history (at least in my opinion), because the way it is now, we have no way to view our own comment history, for instance; the closest we have to that is viewing the most recent 30 responses.
Is there a chance that de Delete option on post could be enabled?
I don't know if that would help, but I wouldn't mind deleting old stuff to help you to free some space.
Keep up the good work!
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
And the ability to save stuff in a "trophy rooom".
...just check to make sure deviantArt doesn't have patents on those features or something.
Not trying to be a pain, just trying to get a metric the mods will go by.
I've met some lurkers that have turned out to be friendly and fave a lot, but have no uploads and hide favorites. I've also known accounts that nuke everything to return from the ashes years later and rebuild.
I'm sure you'll have requirements for this. Just wondering if we'll be updated on them later.
Sorry to be a bother. ^^'
Correct! We mean TOTALLY blank non active accounts ^^
Nice idea to add the tip jar. ̷B̷a̷d̷ ̷D̷r̷a̷g̷o̷n̷ ̷t̷o̷y̷s̷.... erm, pizzas all round for those long, late-night shifts. ^'
It's nothing much in the big scheme of things compared with ensuring there's nothing untoward underlying that "sharp increase" in FA storage use, per my comment on the previous journal, but prevention is better than cure and all that jazz... : )
Not sure how I did that.
Also, I seriously hate the new reply system, revert it back please.
All the AI art on DA keeps the real artists away. Nobody will flee to there. They already had a major exodus over it.
They won't be deleting accounts with content. But how "content" is defined...remains to be seen.
The reply system hasn't changed on Classic, so it looks the same as always to a great deal of us.
Unfortunately DeviantArt is still strong financially, FurAffinity...Not so much...They are struggling with money without AI art unfortunately...DeviantArt took advantage of AI art and is making LOTS of money off of it.
FA is making a morally correct decision, then, as allowing AI "art" will cause another major exodus of real artists and tank the site. So I stand with real artists and FA's decision.
DeviantArt has a LOT of benefits over FurAffinity, for one there's NO restrictions to image size on DeviantArt, regardless if you are a free account or not. I seen images on DeviantArt, with over 10000 Pixels in one direction, whereas FurAffinity has a heavy restriction even in FA+ where you can't exceed even 5000 pixels in one direction, even file size limits are far larger on DeviantArt than on FurAffinity as well, hence the large userbase even with AI problems, in fact, some exodused users returned to DeviantArt after seeing the serious restrictions on FurAffinity.
The only saving grace for FurAffinity, the ability to post Explicit content without a paywall, within the limitations of FurAffinity's policies of course. On DeviantArt you MUST paywall such content or it's not allowed at all (Which honestly should be illegal!) as per their policies. oilio2 pointed this peculiar anomaly in DeviantArt's policies to me. Plus, AI art CAN be good if used correctly.
In terms, DeviantArt is still performing far better than FurAffinity, it's more stable, doesn't use Display Names, and has less strict size limitations.
Ironically, User Titles achieved what Display Names does already, so why add Display Names when User Titles achieved that goal long ago? FurAffinity didn't need Display Names, they were tricked into using Display Names when they would've been fine with User Titles. I know User Titles act as a secondary name. Many used it like that.
This is all factual too, I'm not lying here, but FurAffinity is technically in trouble here...
Same applies to FA. We're fortunate they listen to any feedback. I have never heard of DA doing so. They've decided to focus on making money instead of serving a community of artists. There may be good art there, but I'm not nuanced enough to sort through the AI slop to find it. DA is an AI farm itself, with tools they have and the original "automatic opt in" to let AI use your art. They are not artists' friend. But go ahead and say that AI is fine and dandy. Just do it elsewhere.
I won't say anything on that last subject. I have never had an account strike, and don't want one over such a thing.
If FA needs funds and is transparent, users will help. Otherwise I don't care if it doesn't offer gigabytes for file size.
You log in it -> Its used
Also im pretty sure not many would "flee" to a website thats basically a AI dump.
If you wish to support AI "art," please do so on DA. FA has stated their stance. You will not convince them otherwise in this.
Users go where they're comfortable, or have an established following. That's why some still use DA and TwiXtter despite the drawbacks. If you are uncomfortable with FA, you aren't forced to use it.
Or you can go through to clear them out and keep the ones you feel you want to go and look back on later.
I always keep my notifications clean.
What is "content"? Do faves, journals, or shouts count? If so I think you're okay.
I purged my content from this site in response to some of the recent rule changes, but I still browse as I see fit. Not having an account means I can't see content from artists that restrict to only registered users.
Really hope FA doesn't go the way of NexusMods here, or I'm sure many people would start leaving.
What’s gonna happen to accounts made as profile decors, public and private ones? Are they gonna be deleted as well if there’s no content on them?
It's... really not close to the worse we've seen so far.
Like, not even remotely close.
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪 with extra for your diligence and verve!
Like what? I've got notifications i have saved for reminding me about stuff I talked to people about. I don't hold a lot of them but what I have are older than that.
And I bet people that do the same but hold more would agree
Maybe do it to journals but don't do it to comments/art.
For those, you could maybe add a way to archive notifications - make them be ignored by the auto-removal. You can cap how many, if necessary.
I'm helping!
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
Additionally, I'd love a way to select what types of notifications to receive when watching someone. (Another old dA feature.) I rarely read journal posts, so being able to disable ever getting notifications for them while still getting the art would reduce the overload problem.
Thank you to the team working on all this!
🥓🍪
also, good luck.
But i just now seen someone mention notes, which is something it's important to keep it intact, so i do hope the whole idea of auto deleting stuff doesn't include notes 💦
or possibly an option to "fave all selected" would be an idea too
personally, i have a hard time getting around to clearing out my notifications due to the lack of streamlining in faving. the current most effective method i have is open All of the ones that look interesting in new tabs and having a key on kmy keyboard to close tab and just hover my mouse over the fave button then just fave, close tab, fave, close tab, etc which makes the process take a little too much time and effort
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪 and extra for being diligent about it!
If I may ask a technical question - I think I saw that data is stored on a UFS file system, and that it was a bug with expanding the filesystem that led to the issue. I imagine the choice to use UFS is from the days of Dragoneer (rest his soul). Are you continuing to use that for the new filesystem you're moving the data to? If so or if not, what's the reasoning behind it?
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
There are critters on some social networks that I follow specifically because they find and boost good stuff. Folders are a really good step in that direction - I really like the idea of being able to better organize "here's artists that I really like, here are a subset of their pieces that are really good, here's a collection of art around a specific theme that I really like." :3
And I think that can be a really good way to aid discovery without bringing in the more toxic elements of recommendation algorithms - I don't necessarily want a site controlled special feed, I just want to be able follow things that my friends like <3
❤❤❤
Related to that, and related to the spiraling notifications pawblem, this is something that no furry social media site I've ever used has ever supported well, but I would love the ability to follow an artist's folder instead of their entire gallery. There's complications there - how do you handle artists moving works around, what happens when folders get renamed or deleted, but..
As a user, it would make my inbox a lot easier to use - I kind of gave up on my submission inbox because it just grows faster than I can sort it - and I barely follow many artists on here.
As an artist, it would be AMAZING as a way for me to make my gallery more accessible. I draw a wide range of art - completely SFW and wholesome pieces, NSFW cute stuff, and multiple hard kinks. And I have critters who like some of that stuff, and have aversions to the rest of it. And blocklists have made this a lot better, but I would be lying if I didn't say that I regularly think about making separate alt accounts for each kink category (before giving up because it would just be a nightmare to manage).
There's no way for somepony to follow me without getting all of the art in their inbox. But I do organize stuff into folders - if they could follow a folder, they could just get endo artwork and never need to worry about seeing fatal. They could just get non-vore art. It would be a huge boon as an artist - and would mean fewer notifications are getting generated for them.
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
That been said, I would be okay with an autopurge of 6 months of notifications or so, even though I'm well aware it would be a MASSIVELY unpopular modification. I know some people have been accumulating notifications for years, and I wouldnt be surprised if some people have been accumulating them for over a decade.
Now, as someone who isnt an expert on databases and that field, im curious, why are notifications so consuming? I always thought they'd be just a single number on the database. Knowing why would also be good to let people understand why its good to clean them.
- A unique ID
- A type (journal, submission, etc)
- A reference to the thing being notified about (journal entry ID, submission ID, etc.) to get title, author, and date
So, each notification would be a record, or row, within a hypothetical "notifications" table in the database. So, if someone has thousands, hundreds of thousands, or millions of notifications, then that's millions of records in the database for a single user. Add up all the users and all their notifications together, and that's a lot of data!
(The numbers seen at the top of the screen would be a simple query, selecting counts of these rows grouped by type.)
Another solution could be having a default delete after X amount of time for each section. For example, a bimonthly submission purge, a monthly journal purge, and a hexamonthly faves purge?
Mostly just spitballing ideas, and hope things go smoothly in the final stretch!
Welcome to FA! ^.=.^
Have
Be aware that, as your account says that you are a minor, some artists will not interact with you. It's not personal! Some of their content may not be suitable for you. Please respect their decision.
Now you have your second comment! ^^ Enjoy your stay on FA, and have a nice day!
My worry is the many icon pages that have NO uploads/journals/comments, sometimes only having an icon and no "about" section written
as well as the people who don't upload to FA or comment, and who maybe rarely favourite other's uploads (assuming favourites could count as content)
But cleaning up actual unused/abandoned accounts would be good
It would not apply to accounts that have comments, faves, profile info, are active, etc
man i've been wishing there were favorites folders for years. i'd be jazzed if that happened.
i hope things go smoothly, i've been missing y'all.
im really confused as to how some people use this site having hundreds of thousands of notifications would make the notification center completely useless to meanyway, suggestion regarding the piling up of notifications- maybe add a "mass unwatch" button that allows users to automatically unwatch every account theyre watching at once? im sure a lot of notification pile-up is on old accounts that people moved from and dont log on to anymore; id certainly be happy to go and unwatch everyone on any of my old accounts if there was a painless way to do it
Also ooohhh the ideas are nice.
1: Blocks where no notifications have been cleared
2a: Blocks where a small number of notifications have been cleared
2b: Blocks where a large number of notifications have been cleared
3: Blocks where all notifications have been cleared.
Let's take for example new submission notifications. Other notification types can be dealt with similarly.
A user hasn't been to the site in a week let's say. For that week, we can record a meta-entry that's just a stand-in for "all notifications from their followed accounts" and generate it on-the-fly the next time they visit the site. Suppose a week prior they watched 3 new people and unwatched one, but didn't delete any notifications, you can record a stand-in for "all notifications from their followed accounts, plus the unwatched, minus the newly watched". Suppose the week prior to that they removed some, but not all, of the notifications from that week, you can record either "all notifications, minus notification IDs x, y, z" if they deleted a few, or "only notifications x, y, z" if they deleted a lot. Then the week prior they had cleared out their inbox, record that as "end of notifications" if you need a record of the position of the last block, or just nothing at all and treat the default condition as empty.
I'm being a little sloppy with my explanation but hopefully it gets the point across. The idea is to record the smallest delta from either full or empty with which you can regenerate the notification stream, rather than recording the stream itself.

An account that has zero activity
What counts as activity?
-Submissions
-Favorites
-Journals & Comments
If you have done any combination of the above congratulations: you are NOT a zero activity account!
I know some peeps keep them to remember their old usernames, stuff like that, but perhaps another suggestion for you guys to help cut the storage used up is to find Inactive Accounts. I’d say at LEAST 2 years, just to be certain, and clear their ”Watching” list and their Notifications, Notes and MAYBE Favorites, while leaving their account around so they can keep the accounts without contributing accidently to the problem! TwT
EDIT: ALSO, could apply SOME of this suggestion to Deceased and Perma-Banned Accounts, but on a smaller scale, such as clearing their ”Watching” list and Notifications, but leaving Notes (maybe not on Perma-Banned accounts) and Favorites!
"Moved Accounts" are not considered a "zero activity" account as those are literally accounts with history and activity.
Notes is a different system from notifications and not apart of this.
And making sweeping edits to the page of a deceased user goes against the idea of leaving it 'frozen in time', so removing content they made or content they saved goes against that.
This is purely for *notifications* and not any other part of the user page interface at this time.
I did reread my original comment to make sure, and I did actually specify that what part I was talking about, I mean this lovingly as I know that many of you have lots to do, but if someone is making a suggestion, maybe try reading it in full, no skimming, it will help prevent issues of misunderstanding what someone is saying.
I know and understand what the journal and your comment were about, I was making a suggestion to help out, and I kept it rather related, I know you were talking about ”Zero Activity” Accounts, I was offering my suggestion as an ADDITIONAL option to help keep it down.
Even with the ”Moved Accounts” Accounts, I wasn't suggesting they be deleted, I was asking, and I never asked if they counted as ”Zero Activity” Accounts either, I was asking if they were being considered for deletion too, but I can see how that part may not have been clear, but my suggestion of the ”Watching” list and Notifications clearing could definitely apply to them too!
I'd also like to suggest that if you automate removal of notifications after a certain age, (like six months) it might help to implement a little warning message imploring the person to look through their notifications, clean out anything that's no longer useful to them and perhaps save/archive anything they don't want to lose in some way shape or form. Like I have a little archive of my own on my pc full of usernames, links, bookmarks etc so I can keep inboxes clean :)
Hopefully get some notifications soon.

But I believe that cleaning the house from abandoned accounts is a good idea.
What seems obvious to me and you, may not be to other people. Such is the perils of navigating life online.
Cute character, by the way, not used to see that hue of pink used in successful manners (to my eyes, at least, but I'm an annoying, picky bitch). Kudos to the artist.
And thank you very much! The artist is
I tend to leave them for long periods until there's so many I don't even register the numbers in my minda when i look at them, haha

Other than that the other changes would be great! More organization is always a great thing in my opinion! Particularly the ability to sort faves would be useful for me not having to dig around for things I've saved as inspiration/ drawing references :D
Also: how much of a change has people purging their postage partitions made? I can't be included, I keep mine 0'd out out of habit.
as for folders to sort favorites into, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF WHATEVER YOU CONSIDER HOLY, GIVE US THIS!!!!
I strongly advise that this dialog be revised to include phrasing about the specific category(ies) of messages that will be nuked by the nuke button so that users know exactly what's getting nuked and can make better-informed decisions accordingly.

Oh no. That is how I kept track of everything, refreshing regularly to see if the numbers go up or down so I know whether to be depressed or happy. Guess I will have to just transfer the current counters to a .txt

Purging notifs 6 months or older sounds like it could work. Would that be for inactive accounts only, or for all accounts? I know some people like hoarding notifs, so if it's not a lot of trouble, maybe accounts inactive for a year could start getting the 6 month notif purge? Idk I'm just spitting out ideas for people who do like hoarding notifs XD
Grouping notifs by artist would be nice. Are you guys thinking of something similar to what DA does, or something different?
Also I'd REALLLYYYY love to see is being able to search in your favorites please,
AND IMAGE BOOKMARKING!
Happy to see how close the progress is getting towards finished too!
I can’t wait to see what’s all to come and thank you guys for your hard work!
Make sure not to burn yourselves out, here have some coffee!! ☕️☕️☕️
Certain journals are kind of nice to keep around, because they still get occasional comments months apart. Others have a buncha links to interesting things or topics I like to keep tabs on. And I know some people would be sentimental to lose particular journals in their inbox (∞)
I hope you haven't gotten too much flak for it! 💜
JUST DO IT!!!!!!!!!! People have had enough time to take screenshots and frame them.

Close to being able to post my music again to this platform! :D
I am itching to post more content here. glad it's coming along nicely!
NICE
Hoping there will be a way to set it so some folders can be set to be either public or private. That way we can get to have fully curated folders without being too picky about faving stuff.
I do feel guilty for being part of the problem, but I'm cracking down and doing my part, speeding up the rate, did a good 20,000 and counting today. Though I'll admit I'll be sore if the majority of it got deleted without me actually getting to filter through them. To any maintainers reading this, this is not to say not to do it. If it has to be done, it has to be done. I'll be annoyed but that'd be the worst of it I suppose.
Down to 2808698 from ~3500000 over months of work.
And automated purging of notifications after a certain amount of time is a very good idea. In light of how many people with a backlog of literally thousands of notifications, I daresay it's necessary going forward.
I check in multiple times a day to make sure I keep up with new uploads, gotta keep up with comics as they are updated, so my notifications never stay around for very long ^^
(No, I don't have a life!)
(Just nuked all my notifs to help speed all this along.)

But I have a question about inactive profiles.. there are those that are used as icons and accordingly they are not active. How else can we decorate our profile? :(

Though I am particularly enticed by the potential to have folders in favorites eventually. This would help this site "replace" Deviant Art. I still miss the old UI there where you could just drag and drop pictures into folders, and had better options for content filters while searching. It was so good back then.
If they want to get worse, it's on us to get better.
I'm doing my part!
Just so it doesn't get lost in the sauce: would accounts belonging to deceased users, also qualify? Unless that is already taken into consideration.
I can't imagine swimming in all that ... the Bsky thread is terrifying. I bet y'all have 9000 tabs open too
I have an old account on this site I never deactivated bc I didn't know I could, and then FA forced us to change our passwords and I lost the email to that account back when tumblr had a leak so unfortunately that account must have thousands of notifications piled up. I'd love to be able to deactivate it regardless but I've accepted it staying open.
Favourites folders would be amazing too.
Even if it doesn't have folder thumbnails like DA, Folders for Favs like we have for Submissions would be <3
I'm pretty religious about cleaning out notes and notifications but I'll double check for the cause. :)
im doing my part \o/
Some people, like myself, have journals/comments saved from people who are no longer alive. Their last comment. Forcing people to erase those world be cruel.
You should at least allow a protected tick to prevent treasured notifications being erased.
I'm kind of torn on expiring notifications, on the one hand I totally get why you'd do it and I like the idea in an abstract way, on the other hand I do understand wanting to keep one or two notifications around long-term. Would it be possible to implement expiring notifications for only if the account has been inactive for X amount of time (Like 6-12 months), or idk just make it so that you can only have X amount of notifications in your inbox at a time before they start getting cleared? (Not sure what would be a reasonable limit or how to explain what I'm thinking - I was thinking something like, if you've got a few, let's say 5 for argument's sake, nothing happens, if it gets to say 50-100 notifs then they get cleared out after so long) IDK I can see both sides of it. (well - I can see why you'd want to keep a handful of notifications around longterm, not hundreds!!!) But I'm cool with whatever has to be done and appreciate the heads up either way :) Good reminder that I HAVE been slacking on sorting out my notifs lately, must get onto that tomorrow...!
Birthday notifications would be great and PLEASE add a way to sort favourites (Search would be fantastic but folders would also be fab), I've wanted that for soooo long!
Edit: BTW - Thanks again for all the hard work, you guys are doing amazing!
I see some people suggested being able to "lock" a few important notifications, I really like that idea. You'd have to have a hard limit on how many could be locked of course (otherwise you'd still have people locking 300000 comments) but being able to lock, say 5-10 notifs and prevent them from being deleted sounds like a good compromise to me. That way people should be able to save what's important without it clogging up too many resources?
But what about the icon/page decoration accs??????? They are non-active but other users need them to represent their profile pages and so....
Now that's something I'm thrilled for, honestly!
Nuking all my notifications now to save you space <3
It would probably improve the situation of writers and musicians, since we designers have this "privilege".
thank you to the staff though for the hard work being put into bringing the site back. i cannot imagine how frustrating it is dealing with the tech debt and decades worth of data right now
perhaps the ability to disable comments that are not direct replies to a parent comment as well though I'm sure that idea is much more of an ask.
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
Also kudos immensely for all your hard work!!
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
We appreciate the verve!
Guys... all you have to do is query which accounts have 50,000 notifications and purge THOSE. Just blanket deleting things by date is the wrong way to solve a problem.
Also, make sure to flag accounts and check sanity limits before purging. If purges are based on datestamps alone, a small bug could wipe out the whole notification database.
I never have more than a dozen notifications lying around, but I do have some old ones. It would annoy me greatly to have things disappear for no justifiable reason.
Not like you guys have ever listened to a single one of my suggestions.
Upon making an account (for new users) or some manageable number of months after implementing this system (for existing accounts), the default setting for automated notification purging is six months (and advertised as being so). Anyone can voluntarily opt-out by changing a setting (making it longer or disabling it entirely) through some not-too-difficult-to-find toggle or whatever, but they have to consciously make that change. Presumably, a lot of accounts won't bother (and some might miss that detail outright), thus clearing up space, but anyone who has old notifications on purpose and otherwise doesn't usually let their notifications get out of hand doesn't have to scramble to rejigger how they have things organized.
*sigh* I did my part....
I completely understand the need for deleting out notifications. Makes total sense to me, and I personally dont understand how or why people let them build up to such extremes (Millions?!). However, it's quite clear from various comments there are people who do so for whatever reason they may have.
Many suggest it being optional, but as pointed out, that completely defeats the entire point. Those who maintain their inboxes will keep maintaining while those that don't will likely opt out and continue to be an issue. I think these 2 ideas may potentially help keep inboxes down while still helping keep those against it happy by having methods of preventing it within their own control.
Idea 1: I saw many comments worried about losing older notifications, ones that are sentimental, and I get that. I held onto a notification for a long while after one of my friends passed away unexpectedly, so I get that. I do. This idea is that the threshold is not based on time... but rather total count. Let's say the limit is 1,000. A user can have up to 1,000 total notifications in their inbox. If that amount is reached, have an automated Note sent to them warning them they have 7 full days to get their notification count below 1,000 or else the system will begin removing notifications. So long as users attempt to be a little more choosy in what they keep, they'll be left alone. That way people who want to hold on to notifications from 5, 10, 15 years ago can. They just need to make sure to remove new stuff routinely.
Idea 2: An ability to Lock a Notification that will not allow it to be removed, neither manually nor automatically, until the lock is removed by the user. Let's say its limited to 100 per user. Someone could pick up to 100 total notifications that will NEVER be removed so long as they are locked. The system won't automatically remove those 100 and the user cannot accidentally remove them while the lock is in play. The user must unlock it first, then remove it.
Neither of these ideas are exclusive either, and can be combined, like users could mark 100 notifications they never want removed, abd the system won't bother removing unlocked ones unless they go over 1,000 fir a week. Again, these numbers were for demonstration purposes, and can be whatever is deemed reasonable.
I keep mine really slim compared to the Bluesky thread (around 2k-ish, all combined), and with the current lack of organization in favorites, looking back through uncleared submissions makes for an easier/more focused trip back down memory lane than trying to shuffle through many, MANY pages of faves sorted only by date of they were added to favorites. I've also got some comment reply notifications saved where people said nice/meaningful/idea-inspiring things in reply to my comment on their notification, and holding onto that notification makes it much easier to find my way back to that than trying to rely on the current favorite system. Sometimes it does take a LONG time for all the pieces to come together and circle back around on an idea.
If there was an organization system for favorites where I could make some "best of" collections for certain themes or artists and as well as maybe a folder where I could stick submissions with comment threads I'd like to keep track of or follow up on, that would help remove the need to not clear notifications.
...and if notifications are going to expire based on time rather then quantity, I'd REALLY like to get the favorite system improvements before notification expiration happens, so I can have some time to make sure my oldest notifications get moved over.
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
Perhaps getting filtering system in play before implementing an auto-purge would be a fair middle ground on the issue.
Since we are now foing mandatory tagging perhaps we can have policy that requires submissions that are basically ads for streams, Patreon, YCH, etc be appropriately tagged so with a notification filtering system we can quickly get through/purge those notifications.
Also, equally useful would be multiple submission support since often people upload variations of content which would certainly help keeping those notifications at a lower number. I am sure that's already been discussed internally but just wanna throw my hat into that ring.
Meanwhile I will work on going through notifications. ×_× didn't really expect those would have any sort of burden on the site.
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
We appreciate the sacrifice.
i would ask that comments not be removed: personally i save comments that are meaningful to me while curating away the bloat, so the 40 or so comments that I've got in my notification bar is a sort of "hall of fame" that I keep. I'd be heartbroken to lose those to auto-self destruct.
You then have to make 1000 notifications to 1000 users about 1 submission.
All with the same message.
Now repeat that for 10,000 artists who are each watched by 1000 people.
Duplicate data is often more expensive that just the one copy.
It might actually be a healthy thing for them to be auto-purged for some people. Some of the excuses being made for it sound very obsessive.
Folders in favorites, that sounds good. DA implemented that 🤔
Here's your reward to acknowledge the sacrifice: 🥓🍪
I'll try looking it in a positive way and focus on how it'll be a fresh new start for my notifications.
Also, Fav folders?! Be STILL my beating heart! Having a curated spank bank -er- playlist of fine arts that I can peruse at any time? That sounds AMAZEBALLS! XD
For the second one, that could help out.
For the third, zero content accounts are indeed a waste of space. If they aren't active, then they should go.
Finally, for the fourth, I would like that as a possibility, even if it does mean a little more data.
my notifications are clean
If you use the Classic UI it is not available.
If this is going to be implimented id like to see when things get removed off of my page as well.
May the 4th be with you.
151,659 submissions and 20,511 journals cleared out.
Not so keen on comment and watcher notifications. But I also don't get a lot of those, so they feel more "personal"
But perhaps put in a max limit allowed could work. So that when it hits that limit it will delete the oldest or x number of oldest notifications automatically. That could help for all four types of notifications.
how about showing oldest first as a default instead
many simply watch too many people that upload more than they can keep up with and then gives up but still wants to go through them
i know i have some old notifications because i cant get through the new ones to go through them
also seperating ych and reminders into a seperate tap from normal uploads could help too
ofcause that needs people to actully make use of this seperate function
Will it be possible for a search as well since, it's going to be hard to sort them all out.
And
Looking into abandoned zero content account clean ups (It would not apply to accounts that have
What does that mean like the purge thing I can guess what it means and I am thinking it's like notes as well but zero content account like if I dont upload enough my account will ve deleted 😭😭😭😭😭
We can't speculate as to why those accounts were created, but fact remains that they are there, taking up both spaces and potential names.
Your account would not be purged in such a case, if only because there are interactions! No worries. <3
Like I still worry about this thing that happen in the eu and people are saying I dont have to worry about it but I still do
I personally don't see how a site from 2005 that hasn't really been functionally updated since around then having terrible optimization is all that surprising, I mean, we only got tag filtering this year. I think the redesign from a few years back (christ how long ago was that?) was a good step in modernizing the site, and I think it's admirable that the new staff team want to guide the site to improvement to their best ability.
I don't know anything about databasing or coding or anything like that, but it seems recently that big notification number doesn't normally mean it lags the whole servers- But just because I don't understand doesn't mean it doesn't exist or doesn't make sense, just a sentiment I'd like to echo.
I'm excited to get more features to improve the user experience! Massive props to the developer team working to sort out these literally decades old kinks (pun unintended) in the site, some of these issues are actually old enough to be legal lol
If an artist uploads an image, then I favorite it, and some time later they delete the image, I get a ghost in my favorites, I don't know what it is at that point, just that it's been deleted, and if I click on the ghost it just tells me the image was deleted and no longer exists, having the system keep track of invalid favorites has to be taking up some overhead as well.
Could you purge old banned accounts, too? There's bound to be countless of them that don't deserve having their content hosted indefinitely, so it would be good if all their submissions got removed imo... Or would that interfere with deceased accounts?
ALSO, FOLDERS IN FAVOURITES? YES PLEASE!
Thanks for the organizational stuffs. They're kinda status-quo for this day and age, but for basically a fan-run site built in early 2000's, yes, it's gonna take some doing. Thanks for getting that done. Hurrah for modernizing the code a bit. Also, MUCH appreciate the updates on what's going on... that's pretty pro right there. Thanks for keeping everyone as informed as is reasonably possible.
Rock on.
(Instituting an algorithm to kill off and empty one-off-user and bot-made&run accounts would be useful, and prob. minimally intrusive)
Also huzzah for the Jym banner!
....but that's just me being FanBoy for an old pal.
I check my inbox regularly for submissions but keep hold of watches and some comments, I would rather not lose those.
However, the volume of journals seems to be...massive, some people put out a lot of journals and there's no way to filter them. A lot of ych advertising stuff I don't care about. Last time I nuked it, it was 9k, now it's 5k journals. I can nuke it now and again, but auto clearing these past a few months is unlikely to hurt anyone; even if you wanted to keep a few notifications for them the volume incoming makes it a Sisyphean task.
So feature request: filters on journal notifications, failing that a checkbox or automatic deleting of specifically journal notifications after a certain time.
I'm late to the party, as usual.
might want to change that, if I had trouble others will too
At least I don't risk taking space with the amount of watches i got in that period of time, kek!
you definitely should implement something akin this.
>>Looking into ways of organizing our notification system better, like by artist, oldest/newest, and possibly category types (writing, audio, visual, etc)
Definitely, yes. For example, one of the categories could be something like NSFW/mature/SFW
>>Folders in favorites for better organizing
Yes, same as the previous point; one of the categories could be something like NSFW/mature/SFW
There does not seem to be a way to view other pages of notifications past the first, so it'd make sense for an auto-erase function.
(This isn't a statement trying to make people beat that number - please don't! XD )
Thay saw the number and said, "meh, maybe later"
Also why not make it so older notification are automatically removed after a certain time, put a cap on the number of notifications someone can have at any one time, say 300+ or 500+ as the cap limit, and if anymore it starts removing the oldest ones.
S H A M E.
If I clear them, I can no longer do this.
Can’t wait to hear more progress like this! Keep up the good work! 😁
FA: haha bet
Still unusual to see empty space, where was losts of numbers x)
Keep up the good work, people, we stand with you!
In the meantime, since the community's been asking for it, it was deemed at least a "good start" to provide display name changes.
Not perfect in the meantime, but tech is on it!!
It’s particularly bad on ios with the touch screen but still bad if your trying to clear a page.
Could also suggest a clearing mode where it loads smaller images but a lot more of them so you can atleast get the ones you obviously want removed without needing to do 1 page multiple times then swap to the next page or atleast a link to the last page so you can start at the back where it wont get you stuck deleting one at a time when on the last one you want to remove.
Could probably write this much better but I’m too tired atm.
- further organizing options also sound nice, but not that urgent I think
- folders in faves sound wonderful as well, I'd use that a lot
I'd love the ability to turn off notifications if I choose. Maybe the ability to turn off artist notifications by keeping a watching, or just notifications of a certain type like favs
Favorite folders would be fun too! I don't use them even in places with them, but I know a lot of people who have 50 folders divided by theme/artist and they would kill for it.
About the notification system sorting, which would be super cool, I also have an idea of adding a "watching" selection in the search page, which would give the functionality y'all want, but with the added positive of being dynamic (so if I watch someone the search fills with their stuff, and if I unwatch someone the submissions disappear, instead of staying forever frozen like in the submission pages of the people with 7 million notifications).
It also means that searching by specific dates and/or keywords just in the watchlist would work, making it super easy to find pics, even older ones, as long as they have the keywords and/or remember the vague posting date and/or artist.
I made a quick thread on bluesky for this reason too lol https://bsky.app/profile/did:plc:ow...../3log3ej2vv22c and I think it would be a super powerful tool even for people like me that do erase the notifications and might want to try and find an older pic down the line, not just the hoarders
But right now, they just have to manually go through the files one by one, rebuilding the database that's over 20 GB.
Though yeah, having some form of rotating notifications that auto delete after a certain amount of time (3-6 months is fine, i'd even let users set it to whatever they want) seems like a good idea to reduce bloat, if that *is* the cause.
I know, I'm bad. I no deserve cookie. =C
I'm also terrified to know what my old account notif count is up to... Not that I'd ever probably know consider I no longer have the password for that account, but still... it must be... a LOT... >.>
In that sense it may be worth looking into a ''only show people I follow'' filter for the browsing page.

But comments faves and watchers notification idk if I have courage those give me a vibe of Journey and means a lot :3
Favorite folders would be awesome.
It's not an instant fix and if they don't take care of it the right way we're just back at offline mode again. Please be patient.
and how much vollume could they be ? they dont seem hard to compress but maybe i am missing something.
I'm using the submission notifications to see all the uploads from the people I'm watching. As far as I'm aware there is no easy alternative currently for that use case. So if I'd clear those notifications I'm missing what I'm coming for to this site.
If necessary I can help out in implementing that feature.
- search function in favorites, in case your looking for a specific piece or art of specific topic
- changing usernames, i would even pay for that, it also would help to prevent abandoned accounts because peopel dont have to make a new account just to change thair name, personally am constantly struggling with that, if i should make a different account with another name, but i dont wanna leave everythign i have on this account, but the struggles are also a part of why i dont really upload much stuff on here
- when adding an auto clean for notifics maybe add a function to safe specific things like for example if i mark a comment or something that its supposed to not get cleaned ( for example a comment under a commission advertisement)
Nothing triggers me more than screenshots with a bajillion notifications they refuse to clear out XD
I try not to think about it too much...
And something like Truenas SCALE could be used for a very easy and quick setup of a new storage server that utilizes ZFS. NFS is supported out of the box though iSCSI would be even better to use as it has lower overhead, especially if the storage solution is in the same rack or network as the main server.
Are solutions such as those I mentioned not used because of a specific requirement? Tech debt? I'm just curious!
The fact it took them this long to implement folder into this site annoyed me to no ends.
Gotta give them time to properly weigh that against other feature additions' priorities, and/or how they will implement if they do, first. :3
Was hoping to wait to get to 1000 but oh well... 🤷♂️
The "Nuclear option", if you will.
Never knew notes also stick around in the "Trash". So I purged those as well.
Assuming you mean accounts belonging to deceased people, pretty sure we wouldn't touch those if they are flagged as such (I didn't ask the team, but I doubt I have to).
If an account has follows (not necessarily followers), comments, submissions, faves... anything like that, it wouldn't likely to be removed.
I try to clear out my notifications for most parts, I've seen users that pretty much stack them to infinity and beyond.
However, one thing I don't tend to delete that often and maybe just once a year if that is the Watcher notifications.
The reason being is simply that browsing/finding watchers in the list can be terrible, especially if you try to find someone that watched you recently and you try to remember who they were. Without a question just going into you watcher notifications and see avatars and names next to one another in order based on date the most recent date they watched you is the best and easiest way to keep track.
Seeing a big sea of just names, without any image/avatar attached trying to look for someone is a bad experience, no possibility to re-order, and now also users that might've changed their display.. I'm sure you see my point.
I don't request or expect a fix asap, but figured I'd explain why some users like myself keep the recent watcher notifications for longer than probably needed.
As far as the watchers/watching lists are concerned, I'll send your message over to Tech, see what the whole team thinks and what they can do if it can be done; no promises one way or another, however!
Thank you for forwarding this, it may seem a bit trivial but the reason why someone like me and maybe others keep the watcher notifications is specifically for the reason provided so maybe it could give some insight c:
In it's current state the watched by list is just a sea of names and if you don't remember the name of a user it's pretty unhelpful for quickly visiting a profile or remembering someone.

Thanks for your work, guys! ♥ I am glad to see the good news!
Obviously it would be an arbitrary limit no matter what is chosen, but it would be nice for those users who DO clean out their notifications regularly, but might keep some older ones around for whatever reason.
And have you tried to force-refresh your page (CTRL+F5 on Windows) and trying again?
Thanks for letting me know!
Though I can still understand some limit in place given the amounts some folks accrue.
No time like the present to get started.
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
Here's your reward: 🥓🍪
With a double helping for being diligent!
It's the little plus ("+") next to the tag on a submission that allows you to add it to the list.
You can also manually add tags to the "User Info" config page, in the "Tag Block List" section.
I hope this helps!
Take your time

I personally don't even delete my notifications selectively, I go full Douglas MacArthur on them.
question on behalf of a buddy paying for FA ads tho - are folks going to get an extra week of ads to reimburse for the downtime? i recall in the distant past neer sometimes did that, is all
Ad Assistant here: Yes. :) We will be giving 2 weeks.
We need those to investigate further.
At the very least possibly a screenshot.
It's good that you weren't logged in that the time of the incident though; because that might be happening to OTHER non-logged in visitors.
Just something to keep in mind for the future, thank you.
Thank you for the hard work team!
i crave organisation
obv take ur guys's time - there are more imporant things that need attention atm but also
~~faaaavourite oganizaaaaaaaaaaaation~~
Either way I've pressed the nuke on all my notifications to help even if it's only a small assistance
I cleaned them for the first time in 4 years haha
HAhaha there is gonna be a server bottle neck when you are done with everything.
There is gonna be a little explotion of new notifications and artists uploading their art once you finish XD
Im impressed by the detication to this site, and thankful for the input and transparency you have towards all of us users.
I deeply thank you for it. Much appreciatte. FA is endded in good paws.
And a number of artists tend to "over-rate" in order to avoid potentially making other users ill-at-ease with subjects, imagery, or themes that might be uncomfortable.
If you spot an egregious abuse, feel free to submit a Trouble Ticket using the "Rating" category.
I hope this helps!
I do know of some artists who do so because they don't want minor-locked accounts from stumbling into their gallery due to an occasional sfw upload. They don't want to risk minors interacting with them as a primarily nsfw artist.
I believe this is why uprating rules were relaxed, but downrating is obviously still against the rules.
Well if you're taking recommendations, I would like to disable notifications when certain artists I follow post scraps, or stream announcements.
Additionally, you can see the 2025 roadmap in this journal.
I keep mine pretty clear already except for journals. But I usually keep a pic or two in my inbox so I can easily get back to submissions without needing to refresh first. And it's usually a pic I really like to keep around. I'd rather a pic I keep as a bookmark for submissions not be randomly purged.
Only notifications, not notes? I'd NOT like my private messages to be cleared automatically. ._.
But it would be nice to delete/hide all the "moved" accounts instead. People who "moved" many years ago could lost their passwords and the opportunities to delete their old empty accounts either.
what i would love to see is "watched tags" list for users for quickly search tags they like in one go.
and community tags. Users giving tag recomentations to author where they press either "yes" or "no", "yes all", "no all" and option to disable it either by default to all, or per post basis.
Its not fix all be all solution; but i dont think many artists appresiate system like in e6 either; where everyone can change tags of posted art at their hearts desire.
As for "watched tags", you can either click the tags themselves, or make a search using the "@keywords" command at the start of the search to search within the tags list (or omit the command altogether, which will widen the search's scope to descriptions and titles as well).
As for community tags, I don't have specifics, but I know it's been mentioned before.
While it wasn't shot down, I am aware that there was a reasonable amount of worry that it could be abused (not to mention the debates that could come from those... Since you mention e6, you're probably aware of what I am thinking of. X3 ).
I hope this helps shed a light, somewhat!!
Up to a point, it is up to the individual to properly archive and keep copies of data important to them.
Ultimately, you are the steward of what data is precious to you. The data of notifications cannot remain immortal/eternal; thus this post.
If you want to go by section, there's a "select all" button in each section (journals, watches, comments, shouts, etc.) that will select all visible notifications, and you can then click the "remove" button.
This is akin to doing it page-by-page.
Alternatively, you can select manually which ones you want to remove and keep doing it this way as well, which will allow you greater control over what you remove - albeit at a far longer time cost.
TATICAL NUKE INCOMING
If you're going to do an auto notification purge, I'd like the ability to exempt certain notifications, if that's possible? Like, a checkmark to not auto-purge comments or whatever?
Unless you have specific thumbnails for notifications and are not reusing the thumbnails for regular display.
Therin is the issue, somehow. I believe the thumbnail generator used to be on a separate server, but that may have changed some time ago.
1000 notifications = 32KB vs a 3MB image
That is not a high percentage of storage per image.
And if they are using ints instead the number drops by half.
And they can go up to 4,294,967,295 submissions with just an int.
(But for now... The Elongated Muskrat website will have to do: https://x.com/onunoxu/status/191949.....335752/photo/1)
If a lot of changes are gonna happen, I feel we FINALLY need a system at play here where trusted people can go through the giga backlog of past uploaded art/music/animations/ect. and finally give it the proper tagging they have needed for almost TWO DECADES by now.
You're doing art on your own terms, and you're enjoying it. And you share it with everyone, and it makes the world a better place for it.
You aren't afraid of giving, showing your work that you poured your heart into. And that's commendable.
Keep doing it, buddy.
You're great.
Alright. I'll get to work pruning. I'll only keep the most necessary ones. Then, maybe those too.
(I had no clue they took up space, honest. And I wondered what the nuke button was for but didn't want to risk testing it!)
There will always be more notifications!
But there only ever be one you. <3
It will be done when it is done, no sooner, no later.
Relax and have
When I first joined Furaffinity, I didnt actually know for a long while what the numbers next to my name actually were. My bad for not actually looking it what they actually were, right enough.
For example: 200S 3C 23W 48F 273J read like co-ordinates, and its very confusing when you dont get the context of them being notification numbers. It was a friend who pointed out my notifications when I was streaming my page on Discord, and sounding shocked at how many I had.
Data transfer is not instant when you're moving terabytes and need to assure for no corruption!
Also also thanks for the progress report.
... today i learned a lot of people DON'T hate having notifications
i like the numbers nonexistent and will only keep comment notifs to sort sales
6mo notif clearing sounds like a smart idea, since it gives people a good amount of time to have the opportunity to go through their notifs, and would prevent notifs piling up on inactive accounts.
90s aah website and runs just like it. hire better devs, your website is down for already two weeks now
The fact this website has been up for 20 years, is built on code of the era, has millions of uploads, tens-of-thoudands of user interactions daily, has updates built upon that old code, is run mostly by volunteers, and is still able to run in Read Only instead of knocked completely offline tells me this:
Yes, they know what they are doing. So relax, use search to find things to fave, and relax.
Have a nice day! 🙂
>paid volunteers
>has merch shop
>has patreon
>has a PAID MEMBERSHIP THAT YOU CAN BUY
>cant afford better devs
🤯🤯🤯100%%% real
I am big fã she
PLASEEEEE make Something
That will clear all of them.
(on the comment, journals etc notification it only has the symbol but does the same thing)
That would be my biggest recommendation tbh.
They're NOT stale... I just haven't had time to properly get to them.
That's one of the reasons why I don't clean up my notifications - favoriting a bunch of stuff takes time and is tedious as heck.
I don’t know if anyone else has suggested this yet, and I don’t think I have enough time to go through all of these comments on here, but I hope you guys can give us a good video player for us to watch content like 2D & 3D animations on this site, one day. It’s nothing personal, I just hate the fact that I have to go to a different website to watch someone’s hard work. Sometimes, it’s even a social media site I don’t even have an account for. In the meantime, I appreciate all of the hard work you guys have been doing for us and the new stuff you’ll be giving us, soon.
I would like to be able to keep comment notifications longer if possible, too.
I would like the option to unsubscribe from journals, I will very often see "I put up an adopt," "adopt ends in X days," "adopt ends in Y hours," "adopts ends in z minutes," "adopt ended" and I just don't read any of them. (they are now purged)
I'd love organizing favorites by folder!
if I could I could make a "look at later" folder I could get rid of the submission notifications I mentioned at the top...
And can we have a Friends List that's separate from Watching?
Check your notifications! Why are you using sites if you don't empty your inbox regulary?
a megabyte is not much, yes, but if you multiply a (few) thousand notif's by a few million users you geb into the Terrabyte region just for storing the information-'pointers' and pruning them does, in fact, help the database a lot - and thus the whoole site.
It currently reads 91% done. :3
It would be really cool to have a “search favourites” feature for times I want to show a friend something and filter the results down to stuff I know I’ve already favourited.
Also, favourite folders could likely be linked to. This could enable more traffic for artists I’d want to support. Good stuff!
Can confirm, that would help a lot.
- Automatically remove notifications dating back more than a year.
- Stop notifying dormant accounts (last login over a year ago).
- Enforce YCH/Sale category and let people unsubscribe. Someone doing that step isn't a potential customer. This should include censored stuff that is available off-site to subscribers only, as they're selling subscriptions.
-- Bonus: Make it so the opt-out is only for a year or six months. People tend to forget about that stuff.
-- Bonus: Think of a way to highlight something from the sales category on the artist's profile. I'm for a balance, not anti-sale.
- Add basic categories for journals. Some suggestions (that people may want to unsubscribe, too): Streams, YCH/Sales/Paysite-Ads..., Raffles, Rants, Help needed.
- Add an option to link a new account. Like with a special page that people fill out with either account and where they have to confirm entering both account's credentials. Should put out a new type of notification (sorry), but also adds the ability to show that they moved on the old profile and maybe even beside their username on multiple places.
- Add expiring option to journals so people can put up temporary ones.
- Regularly let the system remove obsolete notifications? You know, when someone posts something and deletes it afterwards, the notifications stay. I know that's on purpose, I just wonder if it would be possible to do a daily cleanup of those.
- Let people lookup comments they made, show if they've gotten a reply and let people sort by that. I wouldn't keep all those "New submission comments" and "New journal comments" if I could look those up with a few clicks.
15 years old, but still current in topic for this site.
Hopefully, this helps a bit!
You are amazing and thank you for all the work you are doing. Could I request that status updates be placed as edits to the original post, not as comments a billion lines down in the replies? I see that it's estimated to be 80%, but the previous post detailed further steps and said "we are here" but that list of items has been left behind and now we the peanut gallery have no ongoing context.
Currently 5429 journal notifications. IDK if it really helps if i nuke them all.
It's so annoying to see +1 in the comments, go in and realize that it's someone's "thanks for the fav". No need to thank me, I was just scrolling feed and fav the works I liked, I won't go in and watch just because you said "thanks"... 😭
https://www.furaffinity.net/journal/11123851/
the way i would do it is give users an option on the notification page for how long to keep notifications after being read. Set default retention to 2 days, with a few weeks leadup prior to actually enforcing it of site-notification messages to give people time to know it's coming and change the setting if they want to hold onto notifications longer.
Most new people will leave it on the default setting, and he people who use their notification inbox as a favourites tool can have a longer window to keep doing that.
Keep going team! You've been working hard, time for the last stretch
Lost too much to websites going down forever and ever to rely on them to be my memory keeper.
Only learned what that button did today, so it's not too obvious. You could also prune them, if like me you use some of them as bookmarks. I say this as if I know anything but I only got started cleaning them out when this journal came along and said they'd like me to.
Omnes Optan Mundum Regere....
what i said also doesnt apply solely just to FA either, its applicable to any situation where you upload images, whether its art, gif edits, photography, w/e; getting out of the habit of uploading full resolution seems like a net positive in basically any realm to me. but i suppose im also ancient in internet years. lol
Never forget to sign what you post too. Signatures don't need to be big or obnoxious, but it's always good to have them so that when one finds your stuff in the wild they can ultimately find your gallery. I've made my signature a 'stamp' on the right lower corner, something I copied from my favourite manga artist. But you can get really creative with signatures. Like embedding your signature in an item in the drawing, like on jewelry or furniture. Or on a character, like making your avatar a bird and drawing said bird in the drawing etc.
And the "whoa-ah-ah-ah" hits just right as everyone starts uploading.
95% babyyyyy les goooooooo
I hope it helps!
Also.. On the topic of cleaning old unused accounts, this reminded me of my old account I have and can't access anymore For several wall-text factors.
I understand if it goes away after all it's not being used at all since many years ago tbh.
but it's possible to get help on it to recover access? Maybe to divide different kinds of posts as n/sfw or etc
I would have assumed that the notifications are rows in an SQL table with foreign keys to associate the data from user to notif. Given that, I'd assume perhaps 128 bytes per notif (assuming using username strings instead of user IDs to join)? Even for the average notif hoarder, that's several thousand notifs, or a few Meg of data per user. (tho for the 2.5M user that might approach a gig.) That's only about the size of one piece of media per user.
Across the assumed several thousand users cleaning their notifs, that's a total of maybe a few GB or maybe 10s of GB, which feels trivial in comparison to the TB of media that otherwise need to be migrated.
Would love to know if I'm totally off base here tho. I like learning more about how systems like FA work.
I would upload a huge amount of things on the first day, but imagine if I only upload 10 photos, then others will do it powerfully
I hope there will be limits
You have correctly identified the problem, although I don't know the server's capacity.
There may be a cap for 24-48 hours on uploads (hopefully limiting automated post bots for awhile like PostyBitb as well).
The servers when FA was down for two weeks in about 2016 lagged, but held. I think we'll be okay, though some hiccups are to be expected.
I also would love to be able to search my favorites and to sort them into folders.
I also would really love it if the categories (like transformation or other weird interests) and the species search to both be integrated with searching for search terms/keywords; why they are functionally two separate search engines for this site does not make sense to me. Yes, please merge Browse with Search.
On notifications, is there a way to mass delete our watch list, or even by least active accounts? Some older accounts with huge watch lists can't keep up with the notifications piling up easily over time, would be much easier to keep them lower if we can clear or mute watches
Also, good work so far guys!
the amount of artiststhat are going to mass upload all the work they've done over the last couple of weeks will likely be enough information to crash the site again. We've seen it happen after long downtime before
- Ability to flag sales posts (like you'd label scraps) and set a timed purge on them (Submissions, Journals). Same for streaming announcements would be nice!
- Ability to unsubscribe or temp hide (like the sfw button) anything that's a sales post. Perhaps additionally ability to add exceptions to subscribe to specific artist's sale posts.
- Further thought is that sales post could also be a separate notification category entirely, so they'd be completely gone from cluttering submissions notifications, or journals!
This is because sales posts are really spammy and make going through notifications unpleasant, especially when it's the same image posted over and over again. My fix is usually to unwatch spammy people and add them on my passive watch list, but thesedays I don't really have the time to look at my passive watch list anymore, this also extends to artists who draw extreme fetishes because there's no option to put a content warning (I know some people used to use a different thumbnail to create a warning but those seemed to break at some point and I haven't checked if it works again).
Folders in favorites for better organizing would also be a wonderful touch.

Being able to sort by the category of submission would be useful too - if you could especially put all the YCH/sale posts in one grouping, it would help a lot with not having to dig through a bunch of ads when I just want to see new art, and with being able to figure out who's open for work easily when I do have money to spend. It would have a couple of side benefits as well - users could report artists both for posting to the wrong category if their YCH/sale adverts weren't being sorted in the right notification category, and also could more easily report users who are breaking the rules for how and when to post ads - if an artist with 13k followers posts the same 5 advertisements a day, that's 65k notifications going out a day when it should only be 13k etc, and generally rulebreakers tend to be repeat offenders online. So even just by having the ability to sort advertisements into their own notification category you could, possibly quite dramatically, cut down on rulebreakers causing huge numbers of excess notifications and reduce the burden on the site significantly.
The ability to mass-clear dead accounts from your watch list would be helpful just for tidiness' sake - it'd be nice to be able to just remove everyone who hasn't posted new uploads for more than 2 years or whatever, and easily drop the number of people I'm watching even though it doesn't have much effect for me beyond giving me a better idea of how many active artists I'm actually watching.
Not related to notifications, but I'd love to see an upload transfer system - lots of people change accounts when they want a new name or a fresh start while still wanting to preserve their old art or some of their old art, and if you could automatically move folders of art between accounts you own (and if you could somehow keep track of who accounts belong to, even just by tracking which ones use the same email, or by allowing users to link to an account when making a new one) I think that would be super helpful for people who only want recent art or certain genres of art on their new account but don't want to lose the history on their old account. It totally makes sense to allow username changes but require a history of previous usernames for accountability's sake, but some people are still going to want to start fresh even if just to maintain a timeline of their art without having it all in the same place. Being able to transfer watch lists between accounts would be useful for this too, if someone wants to make a new account but be watching all the same artists.
Another thing I personally would find useful is the ability to automatically unwatch artists who make posts (maybe a certain number or frequency of posts) with specific tags that you could select or blacklist or whatever. One of my problems with watching so many people for so long is that some of them are posting content I have 0 interest in, either from my interests or theirs changing, and if I could bulk-remove or auto-remove artists posting content I'm not interested in or take issue with, that would be very helpful for clearing out my watch list. Even if the site didn't remove the accounts, hiding posts with blacklisted tags or being able to select, when watching an artist, if you want to see blacklisted tag posts from them (similar to Hentai Foundry) would be very helpful.
Being able to select what content you want to watch from an artist, for example if you want to see art, advertisements, stream notifications, or journals, could also help cut down on notifications. I have no interest in journals from 99% of the people I watch and it means I frequently miss journals I DO want to see because I have to nuke them most of the time. Hentai Foundry and Deviantart both do this and I think FA needs to catch up after so long. If this feature is added it would be extra helpful to be able to automatically unwatch a submission/journal type from your entire watch list so I don't have to go through 2000 people to unwatch their journals, haha.
Tags for journals would be useful too, as well as the much-coveted ability to fave journals. I don't think they should be treated any differently than writing submissions in that respect.
That's my giant pile of ideas!
I could transfer to the tech team from here, but seeing the size of your feedback, it'll more likely get lost in the threads. Sending it as a ticket would definitely provide a better holistic view and can be integrated into other feedback far more easily. :3
Don't everybody crowd the door with uploads, now, please. One per person per day until we see that the site works.
If you don't have an urgent reason to post--like say your income depends on it--wait a little while longer.
Please.
Thank you.

Just be sure and double-check that they've left comments and that there's records of them faving stuff. Especially given issues like bbeebbug has had.
Auto purge after 6 month I feel is okay for most stuff, though comments would be nice having up to 1 year, since that is more directed toward you as an person, and sometime people do go offline for really long time. I feel subscriptions and journals is often the ones filling up fast, so 6 month purge for that is totally okay for me there.
Also having separate notis for when people doing commissions/ych/adopting selling market place could be sometime separated from standard journaling?.
Sorry for the delay in response; we don't usually look at past journals, so you got lucky... this time. ;3
In the future, I would suggest sending a trouble ticket under the "General > Other" category for questions about site functionality if we are not actively working on a journal/annoucement.
Now, to answer your answer question proper:
At this time, there is no way to block categories - only keywords.
This is part of the reason for the migration of various fields to the keywords system, so Users are able to block whatever they want instead of only being able to block certain things (on top of all other benefits that we've mentioned over the last few days).
I hope this answers your question, even though I have an inkling that it is not the answer you were hoping for.
Wishing you a wonderful rest of day nonetheless. <3
I think the current tag focused idea is a good way to go about it. I've never really bothered much with the categories myself and only really the tags, especially better if you have multiple characters where the categories struggle to be applicable.
Great work on it so far, it's been a long time coming. Hoping it'll be a big plus for folk like the babyfurs who have had a lot of unnecessary anger directed to them. If people can self censor stuff they don't wanna see, fingers crossed it'll cut down on head butting.
