I did hear that nearly 80+% of the US population over 18 has their driver's licence up-to-date. For the less than 20% that remain, it is not too late to get the ID. However, should it be that you just have the non-Real ID, I did hear that you CAN STILL TRAVEL LONG-DISTANCE BY PLANE OR TRAIN. Do keep in mind that the licence, if it is Real ID certified, it is in every state that there should be a star on it- it can of any kind- a star on Texas, a star on a bear, a star in a circle, or even a star alone. This is required for also visiting military bases, if you have family stationed there or federal buildings, like the IRS.
Reminder, that if it is that there is on the licence, "FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY" on the top right, you are subjected to an extra search, but it can end up in you being late for your flight or train as there will have additional searches and checks on you-sometimes more invasive. There is also the possibility of you prohibited from boarding a flight as well. I do not know about trains, but be ready for anything, especially buses and boats. This is to make the ID's more safe for all and prevent counterfeit. Yes, you can travel domestically with a licence, BUT DRIVER'S PERMITS OR PHOTOCOPIES OF LICENCES DO NOT COUNT! For the case that you do not get the Real ID in time, you will be required to travel with a passport, but there are alternates to skip the more invasive check and what possibly can be an uncomfortable pat-down on you, according to the website of the magazine, Kiplinger:

Since it will be now that if you are going to have an overnight flight, but did not depart yet, very likely that if you do not have the passport required but do not have also the RealID licence that you will be bumped off forcefully without exceptions to such travel. Do remember too, that going back, you will have to end up trying to get to the US Embassy to try to get the permission to get back home as it is certain that the travel is not retroactive. ANYWAY, passports are the preferred way to travel international, no matter what-it can be by law, and research too if you have to have a visa for visit as well. Definitely with no exceptions, if you have to go to Portland to attend Furlandia May 23-25 ( www.furlandia.org ), it is likely to be required to have Real ID to go there since the deadline has passed if you don't have passport, enhanced driver's licence, global entry card, or permanent resident card (AKA, "Green Card") with you. You may have to say goodbye to your luggage, the money for luggage fees, and even your packed fursuit and/or traditional art supplies if you're a professional and have many mediums of traditional art. THIS HAS HAPPENED TO ME BEFORE, BELIEVE ME-HAVING TO NOT KNOW IF YOUR BAG IS OK WHEN YOU MISS YOUR FLIGHT AND YOUR ITEMS TRAVEL WITHOUT YOU IS DEFINITELY NO FUN.

So be wary now about what is happening, for those that do not have a Real ID-remember to bring extra acceptable ID with you to prevent the security from invasively checking you--even shout at you. It has been in the news since 2005 after the 9/11 attacks-the federal gov't has passed a law on this for every resident's safety. It is yourself to blame if you get into trouble or get the extra unneeded extra check. BUT DO NOT FALL FOR SCAMS-THE ONLY WAY TO GET THE REAL ID IS BY THE DMV AS SAID BY PEOPLE MAGAZINE-DON'T FALL FOR THE EXPEDITE PROMISE!: https://people.com/real-id-applican.....scams-11730527 (And in that article, you do not want the TSA to give you the red slip shown if that ID you got is a scammed card.)

So, the best thing you can do is use your car if you want to get last minute purchases if you do not have any acceptable travel documents. You MAY get on with an ID that says "FEDERAL LIMITS APPLY", but it can be a disadvantage for you. Hope that you get the Real IDDL from your state in time before you travel in large transportation machines in the future or even see any representative from the government, because not getting one would be the worst mistake you'll ever have.
