i like to interact with people on here!! so i wanna talk, leave questions or start a discussion topic in the comments and ill do my best to reply to them all!
im currently reading all the books written by Christopher Alexander and the center for environmental structure. Alexander is sort of an "outsider architect" i guess, his work is really deeply touching to me, and he gets at such a deep fundamental truth in his work. i finished A Pattern Language first, over a very long period because its like 1500 pages long and it gave me great insight, it led me to his other work, The Timeless Way Of Building, and turned me back into a voracious bookworm again. now im reading The Nature Of Order, his big fat 4-part tome of philosophy. like, literally at this moment im reading it at the library lol. its a reference copy only so i cant check it out. we'll see how much i can burn through before i move!
i liked when you said rendering simon's spots was erotic because i felt seen with regards to a similar relationship of mine whenever i do art or anything meditatively lavishing of something (what with whatever wires i got crossed) and was curious if you felt that when rendering anything else 🎙
for me its
- feathers and communicating their width on wings
- the flow of fur
- thick + bunching fabric and the sloping flow of wrinkles and drapery
- the specular glint of gums bulged out by the entrance of teeth
- seams of clothing, pockets of denim/cotton jumpsuits and military jackets
- chunky plantigrade feet and doughy curled fingers
- the bumps of bone and tendon under skin and the dimples of wobbly fat
- the pinch and swell of quilts or fishnets
this comment/list is longer than i intended but X_X
i feel this way whenever i do work on a drawing which defines a contour line on a form, so yeah i think i very much feel the same when it comes to things like clothing folds, seams, pockets, and getting the correct form of the hair sitting on a characters head. as well as any and all texture work
Do you have an all time favorite piece of artwork / one that made it click in your head that you wanna be [An Artist]? backup if that ones too hard to answer: do you ever work with non illustration mediums like sculpting or textiles and if so which ones your favorite?
its rly hard to pick a favorite aaaghhhh... idk, i recently saw an acrylic painting by keiichi arawi of a girl in profile on a blue background holding a fried egg in her mouth, and i immediately thought "this is why im an artist."
other then that, theres a piece by Taracod thats been my phone background for forever, of their character ena sitting with her family around a stove/table. theres a big blue tarp on the ground and a jug or orange juice on the table. a picture that triggers so many sense-memories. i think about it often, but theres no way for me to pick a favorite out of taracod's work. and then i think a piece by lepilou of characters by a bay window singlehandedly made me want to pursue traditional mediums seriously. sorry thats a lot lol. as for the last question, i HAVENT but i WILL, mark my words.
ohhh those are really good choices i totally get why those would stick in your brain.. i rarely get an answer for the first one but i always love hearing what people come up with, i personally have really vivid memories of watching pokemon and warrior cat animations as a kid and then seeing the sprites for Mortis ghost's game OFF and getting an overwhelming "i need to learn how to draw so i can do that one day" feeling, i have whole folders saved of my favorite artists to flip through like Gattodyboski/greymoggy, BWusagi, silicon65, Allison reed / javachikin & john espinosa's taxidermy art exhibit lol.
Also i believe in you one day getting into physical mediums!! its daunting to start but its so rewarding to have a tangible 3d object you made (and really helps break a mental block sometimes), i love working in air dry clay and have been getting into making art dolls with sculpey lately. Thank you for answering its very appreciated :)
just try everything until u find tha one you love the most. i use one from the Bee Paper Company, their "Pen Sketcher" line because of their cheapness and smoothness. its almost like using a pad of copy paper, in a fun way. its also thick enough though that it can hold up to rough sketching. i use it for pencil, colored pencil, and pen drawings. i use somewhat thicker and more textured multimedia sketchbooks for paintings, but never colored pencils. i dont really like textured paper. youll probably know what you want if you think about what you like and how you work. if you value line clarity, smooth paper will probably be good, if you erase a lot, then its important to use thick paper that can stand up to it. i like both of those things, so i sometimes use smooth bristol, since it satisfies both those qualities. and then of course if you want smth to be more indistinct and fuzzy then textured paper might be the way 2 go. i sometimes use moleskine sketchbooks bc their creamy color and solid feel are amazing for almost any medium. but they got to be too expensive for me.
well for the brands, i use Holbein gouache, prismacolor colored pencils, and mitsubishi hi-uni pencils rn all my sketchbooks are from the bee paper company
Anything in Pittsburgh outside Anthrocon you're excited to checkout? (aside from the gallery show of course!)
The Funicular up Mt Washington is sick!! It's so old and scenic, I loved it last time I went.
im kiiiiinda actually moving into the city right before AC! im rly excited! there are many things ill get to check out when i live there, but of particular interest to me are the mutliple popn music cabinets, ive never used a cabinet before but i emulate popn music and its my favorite rhythm game ever. im excited to play popn music and meet people in the rhythm game community
Sometimes if I listen to a song I never heard before it distracts me too much and I can't focus.
