Remembering Doug Winger on his 10th year anniversary
3 months ago
This June the 23rd will be the 10th year since Doug Winger passed away.
He was (and still is to many) the O.G. hyperfur. His art and musings influenced a great deal of us, and his work helped both normalise and popularise hyperfurs early on.
I humbly ask that we all participate in remembering him and his legacy by drawing art of his mainstays (Pandora, Pup, Minerva Mink, etc), or really anything big wobbling and hung in his memory, and post it all this June 23. I've been trying to poke peeps with the #RememberingWinger hashtag - but if you use a different hashtag when posting Winger tributes, I'll be fine with that too!
Thank you for considering any of this. I didn't personally know Doug, but I would be remiss if the furry community let this important date slip by and forget an artist that did so much for many.
If you can also spread the word at all, I would be just as thankful.

Although I was wondering if it might make more sense to celebrate his birthday instead? Either way I do like the idea of keeping his memory and OCs alive
And you're right - people tend to morbidly obsess over someone's death instead of their life, but happy thoughts are always difficult to get a response from a call to action compared to sad (or even angry) thoughts. This did made me double check his birth date though, and unfortunately I'd see it being overshadowed by the imminency of Halloween (the literal day before the month of it starting).
It's odd looking back at his art now. A lot of it seems so tame compared to the hyper art of today.
However, I really appreciate you doing this! Doug Winger was one of my earliest inspirations when I discovered the fandom back in 2002. It's great to see people remembering him and his work, which still to this day is a big inspiration for furry artists and members of this fandom, both old and new alike.
And tell me about it! I'm just super grateful that my little remembrance campaign wasn't a flop (these sorts of things can very easily go completely unnoticed). I've seen posts between artists and their followers recounting their memories of visiting him, and it's been an absolute joy seeing all the positive energy. We're happy about a life well lived, not just sad about his passing, and I think that's the best part out of all the art that was made as tribute. ❤️
