Okay, Further Thoughts Re: New World For You Service
2 months ago
Okay, since there was some enthusiasm regarding the new ‘custom world’ thing that I was talking about in the other journal, let’s get into the nitty-gritty.
First off, here’s the other stuff I offer so you know what it is, and so you can compare to what I already charge.
1: Wheel of Fetish: A brainstorm for a client that delivers 3 one-paragraph story summaries a little vague on character that can be adapted for future use/commissions.
Cost: $5
Turnaround Time: 30 minutes once started
Client Effort: List of gender pairing, species preference, setting preference, and 5-10 kinks
2: General Brainstorm: A more in-depth brainstorm focused on developing the plot and characters of a story, ranging from 10 pages to a splurge-length story. Focused on building up primarily plot, character, and some kink. Client may receive write-up afterward if they prefer me to put it together.
Cost: $20 per 30 minutes
Turnaround Time: However long the client pays for
Client Effort: Bringing a base concept to be built up and developed, as well as being honest about whether my suggestions are hitting the mark or not
As you can see, the results of both are relatively straightforward. The longest I’ve had a General Brainstorm go is about 4 hours, but that was for a series that was going to cover 280 pages, so that wasn’t too surprising. The average brainstorm for a 10 pager barely takes 30 minutes, and a longer series can be brainstormed and figured out within 2 hours, most of the time. The write-up can take up to 1 hour of work to completely pull together.
Now that we’ve covered that, let’s talk about the new product.
I’m a worldbuilder. I love worldbuilding. I like the process of making a whole new world, whether that’s SFW or NSFW, and I absolutely adore getting eyes on it and putting stories inside of it.
I also know that there are lots of people with ideas for stories that need a world that suits them, and people that would love to have a world that has stuff baked in that allows for all kinds of fun.
That’s where we can make a deal.
What I’d offer is setting-making, ranging from city-size to world/plane size. What I’d ideally be able to offer while building this up is:
-Culture
-Government
-Magic (if applicable)
-High-Tech (if applicable)
-Kink-effect on culture/devices/public (if applicable)
-Up to 10 major characters
-Major locations for interesting times/belonging to key characters
-Major figures of influence
-Local/regional religions
-Rough Map of certain areas
And so on, all wrapped up in a document with a table of contents that goes between the different sections for you or others to reference in the future.
The basic idea with this is to give someone a sandbox to play around in, have multiple characters to work with in the setting beyond their own OCs, and make sure that they can enjoy various scenarios that allow for their desires, fantasies, hopes, and dreams to be viable.
Superhero setting? Could be a city or a full world. Done.
Crossover of earth and Hell? Let’s come up with the crossing point and work from there. Done.
Fantasy realm that’s low magic but high corruption? That’d be fun as hell to imagine. Done.
But the main thing that I don’t know yet is how much to charge for this, and whether it’d be a flat-rate, an hourly rate, or something else entirely.
So, that’s where you come in. Any thoughts? Respond in the comments.

The Bespoke World

As for what the hourly rates should be, is completely up to you. Try to figure out how much work you can fit in an hour; not the max amount you can do in an hour but the amount that you can do consistently. Otherwise you will only birn yourself out and theres no fun in it anymore.
Also, whatever price you come up with: take 20% more. In my expereince, people when starting out a new venture always try to keep their prices down so that they can attract customers, as they aren't sure how good they will do. It happens subconciously.
You don't have to worry about building up a customer base, as you are already an established and well known writer.
Another reason I am telling to increase your prices is that people generally value a service more if it costs them more. If they think its cheap, they often start being....dicks😅
EDIT: Although, the working dragons comic does it a bit...
Like, let's say that magic is restricted to a certain few, or bloodlines, or something like that. Suddenly, you have a much more stratified power structure, particularly with those that can literally destroy you with a blink. It's not just land-authority or money-authority or people-authority; you have walking weapons. Some people would struggle to get power over them, some would fail and these people would take over in certain areas. This limited-power structure means that they'd either be guarded jealously and have breeding overseen to keep that quality close.
And with that limited magic, it'd only be a matter of time before people started looking for other means of doing things. Yes, there'd be the advantage there, but now we have the other side growing, tech trying to do things LIKE what magic can do. Sure, it can't call down lightning or raise the land, but it can do other things, and there's more people that can use it than there are people that can use magic.
And there's this progress, and arms race, and shift, and variables that tilt things one way or the other throughout history.
And then you ask how magic progresses, what changes there, how does it try and keep up, if it can?
And depending on how you answer it, very different worlds are formed.
And that's just ONE way you can do it.
1: Magic is uncommonly available. Not everyone can do it but most can to some extent.
2: Either bloodline related or training and practice, so there are a few different "schools" of magical theory so to speak.
3: Magic does consume energy, this energy replenishes itself regularly depending on how much is used.
4: Magic can be supplemented with other kinds of energy. AKA: Life force, blood, souls, etc. Not limited dark things like that though, those are just the examples I can think of off the top of my head XD
Could you tell me more about your wheel of fetish though? I'm really interested on what specifically it would look like and what you write about?
I do think this should be an hourly service, but there's different sorts of things you will be doing with that hour: maybe one client approaches this with a ton of notes already prepared, so you are spending time reading/breaking that down, and then there's the document creation once the details are ironed out ... unsure if those should be priced differently.
(For the project I am thinking of considering for this sort of service you're proposing, I would personally be approaching this less as "what sort of kinks/fantasies could I indulge here" and more of a "hey there's an idea here but the setting needs some sizzle, and depending on that sizzle the plot could be this or that", but I again, I think that's probably more of a creative coaching request and more elaborate than what you may be looking to do)
