Superman 2025 and a possible hot take
I forgot to say last week, but my mother and I went to see the new Superman last week. While it didn't make us Superman fans, it was still a solid watch! Nathan Fillion was hilarious as Guy Gardner, and Krypto was adorable (and kinda scary at times ngl). Mr. Terrific and Hawkgirl were interesting additions, plus I liked seeing Jimmy get more attention. I can't really say more about what I liked about the movie without going into spoiler territory, but I will say this: If you're a Superman fan and are wanting a portrayal of him that isn't how he is in Man Of Steel or Injustice, you'll love it. If you're a fan of superhero movies, chances are high that you'll enjoy it, even if it doesn't turn you into a Superman fan.
The movie did, however, help me realize why I have a distaste for most Superman-centric media (My Adventures With Superman being a notable exception), and it wasn't because of Superman himself like I'd long assumed but started questioning a few years ago:
Lex Luthor.
Don't get me wrong: he's a great villain and serves as a good nemesis to Superman (and Batman in the three-part STAS and BTAS crossover special "World's Finest"). Lex is a great and terrifying example of what someone could turn into if they let fear of those they consider "other" take over and dictate their actions--at least, that's the vibe I got from his portrayal in the movie. It's just... I can't stand the guy whatsoever in any adaptation he shows up in. My blood boils almost every time I see him, and not just in the way that has me hoping for him to have some sort of comeuppance--it's in the way that I wonder if I should continue to push myself through the torture of putting up with his appearances!
Anyway.
If you've seen the movie, what did you think about it? (Without spoiling.) And what are your thoughts on Lex Luthor and Superman in general?
