And don't forget to add, be constructive because the problem with many peoples criticisms is they aren't constructive.

It really sucks tbh....

I feel that. Like, I feel like part of the problem is a lot is that a lot of people don't know how to trust their own opinion or can't pinpoint specific things they like, so they try their best to be supportive by only saying good things, and not explain specific ways to get better. I'm like this myself, and while I'm trying to be better at it, it's still a struggle.

This is the reason I quit doing art. I wanted real feedback, but everybody was just nice. Later on I even learned some were only nice to get close to me and didn't mean it. It's why I've got trust issues these days.

People just focuses on the fun side of things nowadays, not caring much how one kills themselves , in WORKING THEMSELVES OUT HARD SENSE, but yeah, pointing things out could motivate the artist to become better and stuff...That, or there isn't really anything bad with the pic. Unless you mean "Give positive thoughts on certain parts of it", etc

Either they just don't know how to explain it, they just only want the fun, or has low knowledge about it... What they could point out, however, if it's only somethin LORE related tied to character(s) you draw

Something that has been working for me on a personal level is instead of looking for the criticism from others, you look at it only yourself and try to 1-up yourself instead from the creativity that you make and that way you’ll just win from your expectations every time and feel good about yourself for meeting your expectations/goals…

Necessarily, I understand that this doesn’t always help everyone out but if you haven’t done it before, then just give it a shot for awhile to see if it works out for you or not. I hope this helps you out Ian, and anyone else that sees this and wants to try this method out!

meh when your me, you care very little about critism, i prefer positivity but i take critism too, seeing as a post i made had some of that, i just didnt care too much

I feel Art can be seen as something you can't criticize without it being opinionated. I can see the need and want for criticism when all you get is "Looks good" or "amazing work". But sometimes a lot of people don't draw and fear that saying something criticizing would hurt the person receiving it.

Generally you gotta ask for it, unsolicited critique is generally considered bad form.

The problem for me is that it's very hard being a genuine critic, especially when it comes to online art because most of the time I can't peer into the thought process and intention of any given piece. Also, because you can't convey a tone through text messaging, any critical feedback I would have runs the risk of coming off as rude and unwanted. It's why I rarely comment anything at all unless I'm cracking a joke or have something I believe is actually meaningful to add to the discussion.

This is for every artist:
Do art because you want to make art. Art is an expression of you, it shouldn't have to please everyone, it doesn't need to be perfect. This is what puts soul into a piece. This of course doesn't apply entirely when it comes to commission work though, that's being paid to draw something. But when you're doing art for yourself, if you like how it came out and your proud of it, then you don't need to improve it for anyone else. Learning to improve your skills never hurts however, and it's rewarding.
