New duty charges on shipping to the US
Just got a note from Canada Post that duty charges will start on all shipments into the US starting August 29th. No clue yet on how much it will be but it must be prepaid before packages will be shipped. I’ve heard rumours that original art will be exempt but those are just rumours. I’m in a wait and see state right now. I’ll keep folks updated if this affects my shipping costs and this what I charge. Sigh. This is going to hurt a lot of small businesses and artists.
Like its at the point where, if you buy an item from overseas, and you ask "what's the tariff going to be when it gets to US shores?", the only legitimate answer is "Who knows?"
While a sender can "eat" the cost, don't bet on it. Instead, it becomes part of the shipping fees if you order something.
The problem is that when I buy something, I budget its cost. It can take some time to arrive at the US, and under the current administration, I have no idea what the tariffs will be on the day it arrives. Which disrupts my budgeting and makes me less likely to buy to avoid incurring extra costs.
Alternately, if the sender adds it to shipping costs, they collect the money BEFORE they ship it, and then it could arrive in the US and the tariffs are higher and now they are underwater.
Lemme know who I need to start nommin' on.
Switzerland? The mail service delivers, charges TAX and then adds a hefty handling fee.
It was strange to see a $ 800 minimis exception. I guess that was by far the highest in the western world. In Switzerland it's like 70 Dollars unless they decide to check the parcel. then they charge you around 20 dollars just for that.
Pleople are just shocked that the free shit train stopped. And the shipping services / sellers have no idea how to handle the tariffs. Do they have to pay upfront then charge the customer or the seller or has the customer to pay for it when he receives the merchandise etcetc. That's the crux, not the tariffs per se.
Trump is still a moron for a lot of different reasons. Getting rid of a $ 800 minimis exception is not one of them.
One of the biggest advantages was that Americans didn't have to pay extra on "minimal" items. Don't kid yourself, the sellers aren't going to "eat" this charge. It will be tacked on to every order you make inflating the price. You'll pay it either in the higher rates to mail it to you, "fee due" when you want to pick up your package, or in the higher price for the item.
But it won't be free anylonger.
And that is what I meant. Do THEY have to collect the tariffs from you, will the shipping company do it or will the customs send you a bill. That's the unclear part blocking everything.
And just to show that Trump was not the first:
In 2021, the UK, Switzerland and the EU decided to make all sellers outside of their respective territories to collect a VAT at the point of sale, and pay that tax to each respective government. As sellers, they were required to register, and were asked for mortgage, income, and other personal information. For those with short memories, many sellers here in the US announced they were going to stop selling to the UK, Switzerland and EU.
Stop acting like the US government is the first to change/make a policy that affected everyone else. Literally every in this case modeling forum and damn near every modeling group on Facebook has had modelers post the same things over and over and over again. Deal with it, just like we had to deal with the BS 4 years ago.
And if in your view taking away a benefit is a good thing, I would hate to see your idea of something bad.
Directly put, it places an additional burden on any US buyer on small items of trivial value. Rather than welcoming another to the club, perhaps you should be questioning why your government seems to think that adding a chage that you pay on "gifts" or minor purchase from another country is such a good idea.
Wait, you can't send anything to yourself anymore? 🤣
I expect you meant to type America - and yeah, Aotearoa has joined the list as well.
