This is the second time this week I've seen an artist say their Discord was hacked, this is genuinely getting scary

Discord just fails hard at protecting their users from hacking. I hear this shit al the time.

No different than any other chat site. It's ALWAYS been on the user to help protect themselves rather than relying on protection from the chat service. I'm not blaming Trias by any measure but your statement is foolish at best and maliciously ignorant at worst.

It may just be the fact that Discord is so popular and has so many users, but in any case their security is just clearly lacking.

Trias also obviously made a mistake by clicking on something they shouldn't have.

I must respectfully again indicate that is not discord specific. No chat service I've ever used has had a virus/malicious file scanner with literally just one exception. Discord doesn't have it, teamspeak didn't have it, Skype didn't have it.

Literally all discord does is facilitate the transfer of files, No check nothing. All security for such items is entirely reliant on the user to make sure what they received is safe. You cannot blame discord for not offering something that's pretty much never been offered other than one exception offered by microsoft

In any case, I'd still call that bad security.

Discord cannot cast any magic spells to stop users from clicking on bad links, downloading viruses from third party sites, and getting their data stolen.

All that Discord can do is detect possible scam activity and pop up a warning, which users will ignore and then go "I GOT HACKED MAN FUCK DISCORD BAD SECURITY".

Right, but that's what the rest of us are talking about. Trias clicked on a bad link and the software swiped his login token or saved password or some such.

Discord could have noticed the IP discrepancy and forced a verification but otherwise there's nothing they can do about that scenario.

My discord got hacked too recently, scariest thing was that it needed no involvement from me and I only knew something was up when my discord was logged out on my phone and PC.

This indicates a guessed password. Your password ideally has both lowercase and uppercase, letters and numbers, and symbols, and doesn't use any regular words you could find in a dictionary.

Also, all of your accounts on different services should have different passwords, or else getting into one means getting into all of them.

While I doubt they could have guessed my password since it is a series of words spelt with some letters and symbols substituted with numbers, I still changed it to one that's longer, more random with two step verification.

You can file a report to discord and they can help you reinstate your account, I had a friend who had the same scam ran on them and they did manage to recover their account.

I fell for the same thing a few years back. I hope you can get it resolved as quick as possible.

Police ain't gonna do squat. And probably neither will Discord. Two of my friends lost their account and big servers the same way and Discord just went "big whoop."

Hopefully you have better luck, but I wouldn't hold my breath. Never click anything from folks you don't personally know. That "test my game" scam has been going around for years, I'm surprised you hadn't heard of it.

There's a non-zero chance of recovering a hacked Discord account. More specifically what'll happen is:
- Trias verifies he is the proper owner of the account but can't access it.
- Discord axes all current logins and changes the password.
- Trias logs in with the new password and updates everything.

Once a Discord server is damaged by a hacked account though, there's no way to recover that unless the admin account is fixed before the server is irreparably damaged. Easier to just make a new server and migrate everybody.

It's a bit late for Trias but for everybody else here's a PSA.

The "test my game" scam is the current #1 most popular scam on Discord. You should never accept personal solicitations from people you don't recognize. If you weren't aware a friend was working on a game, and they send you a game to play out of the blue, don't click that either, they're probably hacked.

This scam is a big problem on Itch.io, since that's an indie game site so there are tons of legitimate games on there nobody's heard of, and they have a Discord server. How do you tell the difference? Well, the scammer won't actually have a game, will they? A real game has promo assets all ready to go, a description of its premise, screenshots, maybe a trailer. A scam game won't since it's not a real game and they'd have to keep making new assets once the old one was recognizable.

Also, don't save your passwords. As you can see, saving passwords is a liability. Alternately, the virus may have grabbed Trias's login tokens which are not the same as passwords but would let the attacker in. To counter that, log out of web sites or apps when you're done using them.

The trick for that case is to search the game name yourself and not click their link. If they're aping an established game, your independent search will get the real game and not their fake version.

Yeah I just got messaged by them. Had an idea something was off when an artist as high profile as yourself contacted little me, and I couldn’t check your server to verify. Called them out on the BS right away before blocking and reporting them.

Tis the season for Discord to do absolutely nothing about the scam that has been circulating their servers for at least a year now, but you can guarantee they'll add 60 more banners of worthless eyesores in the shop rather than fix any actual security issues.

That really sucks, I'm so sorry dude, one of my best friends got hit by the hack too and had their discord just straight-up banned by the hacker, lost all their client contacts and had to rebuild connections.

Discord doesn't deserve to be a centralised hub of anything and the less folks who use it for that and move to other services, the better.

The account that sent you the "test my game" thing is virtually certainly not the hacker's account as the first thing that tends to be done with a grabbed account is sending out the hack to all the victim's friends as people are a lot more likely to help a friend test something than some rando. So "TheAwesomeFoxGuy" should be considered just another victim

100%, it would've just been another hacked account, and now Trias' account is sending out the same messages to all their contacts, and the spread continues

for future reference you can use it to setup a machine inside your computer to isolate risks like that from happening again

alternative you can have a old ass pc with nothing but a windows installed and nothing else and a throwaway worthless account you use on it to download and activate things so it can just be reinstalled when shit happens
