Microsoft OneDrive warning

You have to keep a little crazy hidden away in your back pocket just to maintain your sanity.

Yesterday I received the fright of my life. Opening my laptop, I found that all of my file folders were GONE - not there! We're talking of a good twenty-five years of writing simply vanished.
To back up just a little bit, not long ago I got a new computer. It came with Windows 11. Within this innocent looking device was an evil trap titled OneDrive. I am not all that computer savvy, and it took me three days to set up this laptop. During that time, I do not remember being asked to, or setting up something called OneDrive. I have an external hard drive I use for backing up, so I neither needed it, or wanted it.
Essentially, I do not like my life's work hanging about on the internet, where God alone knows who can snag it at will.
Apparently, however, OneDrive was there, and doing something, so I ignored it. Then came the little notes; 'Your memory is full, you need to upgrade for X amount of money, or you could lose files.'
I never wanted it, I didn't use it, so I ignored it. In my mind, my files were safe within my computer's hard drive. The little red X's next to my file folders were, however, beginning to get on my nerves.
Yesterday the trap sprung, nearly ripping out my heart. I immediately blamed it on myself. Trying to get rid of OneCloud must have pissed off the computer gods, or something.
I wasn't too distressed, as I do have my external hard drive, but I still would have lost a good three months of 'stuff'.
Fortunately, my son is good with computers, and he lives close by. In about half an hour's time, he figured out I had to PAY Microsoft a ransom of ONLY a few dollars, for the memory UPGRADE. I guess calling it that makes this legitimate and not blackmail/extortion.
So, I just wanted to get this warning out there. For now, I shall go back to sipping my coffee, and getting my house back in order.
For the record - Microsoft Windows 11 is horrible. It comes with all sorts of things YOU DO NOT NEED, and so many built in problems it makes you grit your teeth quite frequently. I suppose it is a good thing that some of my teeth or not real. Like good old Jonathon Winters, I have a dog's tooth in there somewhere.

I used OneDrive for a little while, early on, then dropped it when I saw where things were going.
So far I've had good experience with Win11, but then again, I build all of my own machines. I'm also a fan of Linux Mint.

It took some set up, but I got it to look exactly like Windows, but functions a whole lot smoother.
This video is the easiest way to see what it's about imo:

Now they're shoving Windows 11 down our throats, and standard embedded programs that require a monthly fee. This is not the progress that should have been made in 2005, you know. Holding someone else's device hostage is such an audacity of today.
I totally understand your frustration. It used to be funny from the South Park episode "the choice between a giant enema and a shit sandwich," but now there's no choice at all, lol. Piracy has never been as relevant as it is now. They have too big appetites.

my job uses one drive, some deal with microsoft and the DoD that apparently is super secure, at least with the government contract. the rest of us i suspect microsoft is just training their ai on our data...

I'm happy to say that the future of this old Lenovo laptop rests in Linux Mint; I was checking it out the other day, and I absolutely love it. Plus, Linux Mint comes pre-installed with LibreOffice, an office suite that I have been using since 2010.
Vix
The way I look at it, Linux Mint is essentially Ubuntu without all of that additional bloat or tracking rigmarole. I had very little difficulty adjusting to Mint after I installed it, and though I noticed that Mint receives frequent software updates, Mint has never nagged me to restart in the middle of something more important than, say, yet another useless little "feature update" for Windows.
Be prepared to give up Facebook (if you even have an account there) if/when you decide to switch over to Linux -- Facebook considers Linux to be "cybersecurity threat", and I find that laughably preposterous.

Vix
(I don't have a Microsoft account, nor do I have the desire to make one, not even for logging into Windows.)
I also wonder if it was only more recently that China started putting backdoors into Lenovos, because I don't remember ever having dealt with them... either that, or I must have eradicated the backdoors early on without remembering that I did so. It's worth noting that I bought this laptop new in 2020, and the laptop was made in 2019. I also use the Pro license that I bought back in 2016.
I'm SO glad I use a Mac...
Vix
Oh, like I am GOING TO PUT MY FINGERPRINT ON THE INTERNET, so any hacker can make a high-resolution digital copy of it and run off chorting into the Dark Web...
Vix
It's the first software I install.
Vix
I had to put it back to Windows 10 just to make it work again
Microsoft it's not making me want to be a loyal customer to them anytime soon. If They keep giving us crappy updates like this.
Vix
Always make backups to something else; memory sticks, external hard drives.
My 'art' PC runs 10 and isn't allowed internet access - for fears of having it 'upgraded' against my will.
And I'm typing this on a win7 netbook, one that would still load and run office2000 - that doesn't phone home!
I am playing with a Raspberry Pi 5 and LibreOffice, it - or something like it - will be my replacement when this netbook gives up its final ghost ...

Sadly, he is hardly alone in this endeavor (To spy on everything we do, catalog it, market it to whomever they can, or if govt. related, use it to come after us if we DARE to have a difference of opinion. About anything.).

One drive is awful.
I've used all sorts of OS from Windows 3.11 to 10. I've had good times with 10 since i could remove a lot of the crap.
Dreading 11.
Vix
I have three 2TB drives in my tiny desktop and a total of 8TB plugged into it directly (lots of photos, etc). My server in the basement has 17TB in it and there are two 10TB drives waiting for me to rebuild that machine. Tons of storage because I've had too many crashes and lost too much date.
Wednesday this week I lobotomized OneDrive again after the latest Windows Upchuck reinstalled it. I realized it when I tried to find a Word file and it didn't exist on my computer. Grrr! I downloaded the file and killed OneDrive.

Do a search for how to permanently disable or remove One Drive from windows 11. Hopefully it isn't so embedded balls-deep into the OS that it can't be removed, like "Cortana".
Vix
I DETEST One Drive for doing this.
