[HELP] Question for other artists! (About prices)
Do you feel it's harder to draw extra characters in a piece? If so, how to you price extra characters?
I ask for 6 USD per character/6 USD per alternative versions, and have been told that's too low.
Thing is, other people in the market sometime ask for 100% of the full price per additional character, and I don't feel comfortable charging like that. Even 50% feels like asking too much, specially in hard times like this.
(No shame for the artists tho, they usually are already big artists/have very complex detailed art styles, which I don't think it's my case.)
I would really love other artists perspective on this!

You could have a plain white fox that only takes you 1 hour, but the partner is a 4 armed hydra with 12 eyes , 3 sets of wings and a maw tail. Making it much MUCH harder to position(and often much more time consuming). I know myself (and other artist) will also charge extra for porn, as the positioning and interaction between bodies is def more time consuming than SFW where they might just sit side by side. If any of that makes sense.
You should be doing more than 6$ tho. Like if 1 character start to finish (sketch to final shading) takes you 5 hours, you're currently making 1.2$ an hour. You don't need to be the next top artist to deserve compensation homie. Your art is fantastic.
But if you're drawing two bodies, EACH ONE is taking you the same time. If it's 3-5 hours per body, you def SHOULD be charging full price. This isn't about greed or nickle and diming your audience. Art IS a luxury and people buying it know this! Anyone who's mean about is usually doing so for the wrong reasons tbh.
And sometimes, I do take a while to finish bigger pieces, specially if the characters have more complex designs... I do see that as a differential, as most of my clients don't mind waiting a bit longer to receive the end product.
Thanks a lot btw! This is really helpfull perspective!
Happy to offer a perspective! I hope it really does help!
Logically, if someone is asking you to draw one character, that should = 100%! Therefore, mathematically, asking for a second character should also = 100% of the asking price. +50% is a sale price and would actually encourage buying, AND it compensates you for the extra effort...
In my experience, if you charge too low, scummy customers will take advantage of you. I understand you want to be considerate of your customers, but is it considerate towards yourself not to charge for your time? A 50% up-charge seems like a reasonable compromise. :3
