Devotion, wealth, knowledge, strength in combat and in spirit, discovering new places/things/creatures, inventor through experimentation are some ways of social status. Depending on where you are in the world or what parts of some cities will determine what matters most.

The biggest one being shelter, food, water and the needs being met to survive. That alone puts folks on a higher status then those without.
