So this has been bugging me ever since I learned about this but.... do parents not trust their kids to help out? I know that sounds weird but hear me out.
In my family, it is totally normal for myself or my brother to help with the groceries. If our mom is not feeling good or she is in a rush and can't do it herself, she will hand us her debit card and send us to the store for her. We always buy everything she asks us and nothing more unless she forgot an item. We will always double check with her if there is something else thats needed before buying the groceries and heading home.
So I was surprised at least a year or two ago when a family found it strange that we do that. One of the kids even bugged their mom, asking her if she would let them buy the groceries for her and she shut that down quickly. She told them that if she needs groceries then she would get them herself.
It baffles me...the thought of not helping out your family with something as simple as fetching groceries. Is it normal to not do that and my family is weird? Or is it the reverse? TuT

I really believe it depends on the place and each family... In my city and in many places in Brazil, it's quite common. But it might be different in other countries. In any case, your family isn't strange, my friend❤️
I don't trust my parents and they never trusted me so we have always had a weak relationship.
TL DR: both are normal, some(my) parents suck and don't see their kids as people. Every one's parents are different based on how they were raised and how they raised you.
Im sorry that your family was like that to you. I am glad that you are in a happier place now *hugs tightly*
And thanks, I got a good home, great friends, and more control of my own life and I couldn't be more thankful! *hugs back*
For me, stopping by the store on the way to my parents' house and asking if they need anything is normal. In fact, even my friends do this. For example, when someone from my group of friends comes over to visit someone, we usually text or call to ask if they need anything for the party. Or the party organizer might call guests who haven't arrived yet and ask them to stop by the store on their way. And that's common
