Having trouble converting 1 file to avif, help needed!
I don't know who to turn to ask this, but I have a small problem.
I started off by doing the most logical thing and install optipng to compress the pngs and I use it on max settings, other than for the fact it takes forever to finish it works flawlessly.
And here's the kicker: There are no tools like optipng for jpegs because jpegs are lossy by design and even then I don't like jpegs, so my solution is to convert them to avif.
I run mogrify with the -format avif command to mass convert jpegs to avif, except that for a few specific images in my offline stash they kick the ram up to 8GB eating all the remainder of it.
I only reproduced this issue on 2 of them, I'm not testing all the remaining ones I have because a thrashing computer is not fun to deal with and leaves me with the dread that the hardware might fail thanks to all the excessive stress the cpu had to endure.
The names are:
*"Funtime Foxes" - 2.4MB - MD5: a4330e430b3a204f2ea3d6ac79ac1626
*"Want a prize" - 2.3MB - MD5: db3f6e57ab70a7427280f0b669cdde4e
Both by Spyisalive on deviantart.
I've successfully converted ~77% of jpegs in the directory which makes this ordeal more bizarre imo.
Problem commands:
$ mogrify -colorspace rgb -format avif -quality 100% *.jpg
$ convert "[2023-05-06] Funtime Foxes by Spyisalive - 961282476.jpg" -colorspace rgb -quality 100% "[2023-05-06] Funtime Foxes by Spyisalive - 961282476.avif"
This extends to the convert command (because go figure it's part of imagemagick!)
Does anyone on the entirety of the website have the techy know-how to even understand most of the stuff I'm talking about? If you do, help me troubleshoot by running these commands on these files first to check if the problem is reproducible. What should I do to limit the total ram use to no more than 2GB? I'm worried to ask on normie tech sites like the issue tracker of imagemagick to report this issue.
Side rant:
3d sfm/modeler folks are so annoying with their bs exporting 2MB+ png and jpeg files. This is annoying no matter who does it, but I notice 3d art is hit hard by this because it's almost always huge to a ridiculous degree, so I'm forced to take drastic measures like wasting hours compressing and converting files as optimally as possible.
And I said it plenty of times already, but I wish I wasn't like that, I wish I wasn't hoarding my goon stash, but if I don't do it and lose internet connection well I'm fucked or even better I can't trust anybody to take care to not remove their art or try to instead preserve it be it an admin just nuking the artist because the website they run is shutting down along with all the art on it, that's why for how much I hate the badly moderated and ai-riddled deviantart I want it to stay online for the foreseeable future, but more often than not it's the artists themselves removing parts of if not all their art for a reason or another. This is why I developed this habit because I can't trust anybody to not mess up and permanently destroy my favorite pieces.
