As I woke there was no time to ponder, as a note was left for me requesting my service ASAP. So after a quick bowl of my favorite cereal I took a moment to get dressed and headed off to heed the call. The destination: my local food bank. When I arrived it was much more understaffed than usual, and I wasted no time getting to work keeping things stocked and keeping a close eye on the clients.
At times like these where many people are losing their jobs to layoffs along with support programs being cut left and right, it's become clear how necessary it is the service our food banks provide. Unfortunately, these services are now on the chopping block as funding gets cut off; so to my fellow Americans, whenever you have free time, go volunteer at your local food bank. In these trying times it can make all the difference between someone being able to eat for the week and that not being the case. Not only that, but such volunteering also helps build up our local communities and healthier social connections.
