My opinion If that character was originally that Establish Gender I don't see a problem.

There are plenty both Human and Animal characters whether movie/book/comic or animated series To Enjoy.

I need to draw Wendell he's a Good Boy for Royal Wolf.

But that said people are free and allowed to create their own characters, stories and world building.

I dunno lately todays West Hollywood doesn't seem to like the male leads. Its hard to explain considering Disney has lately messed up two actually three franchises they bought.

I find nothing wrong with being fond of a character that is the same gender as you.

For me, when I am creating OCs, I typically like to create female OCs because I am also female, and I typically and naturally relate to my own gender better.

I agree! Your statement holds true, even though I'm a male. I keep creating male OCs, because I can relate to them better, like you said. Not all of them are male though, because I've tried making female OCs in the past. While it was a refreshing change, I didn't get attached to them unlike my male ones, so that's why I've stopped creating female OCs for the most part.
