Ok, Now We're Seriously Rating Journals? (R)*

* Rated "R" for Ridiculous, Redundant, Ranting and Rotten :p
...Look, far be it from to complain about what goes on in FA. (At least on a daily general basis.)
Also, please note that I have no issues with the rating system in general when it comes to art. (Even though that itself -might- be a bit subjective, depending on the mod(s) on FA.) After all, we do have a lot of younger individuals visiting this site that might not be ready for all of the adult material that pops up on FA.
HOWEVER
Rating journals? For what? Who benefits? Not -only- that, but I find this to set a very slippery slope in the free speech department. I mean, granted, I'm not going to fill up my journal with a whole bunch of cuss words unless I was really ranty, angy and no pets, but...
Can't help but think that 2rantinggryphon would have a field day with this, that's for sure :P

FA+

And I think that leads to a rather interesting question: Much like how people use Patreon to post their x-rated arts, wouldn't the same apply to journals?
One of the local bus drivers was talking about the time a teenage girl took a shit in a takeout box on the top deck of his bus and tried to leave it behind. Guess we'll see if that makes it in. Spam purse.
I'm being flippant because this planet's done, I guess. The future is bleak, the present is already dystopian.
There is no 1st Amendment, 'Freedom of Speech.'
If someone is offended, they will complain, and depending on whatever political/theological/societal agenda was being discussed, and which SIDE OF IT/THEM you may be on, vs the complainant/Mod, you can expect to be warned/censored/banned, depending on mood of said Mod at that moment.
This is how F.A. wants their site/platform to operate.
The more you know, eh?
I don't see that as much anymore - though NGL, there could be quite a few exceptions to that.
I highly recommend folks read it in its entirety, and then take a very hard look at what's going on across EVERY social platform, today.
History is a damned valuable Teacher, and an utterly ruthless Task Master when ignored...
I prefer it this way. I really dont want watchers to not have a warning that I am about to talk about something graphic. Its actually stopped me for some time in terms of journal updating, because I live in the brutal environment of what the healthcare industry currently looks like. Sorry, no one needs to get graphic medical gore details, so its best to not speak of it in a journal even if I want to. The ability to rate my journals as Adult now is supremely welcome, I might actually be more active on the site now for updates.
.....I also dont want to read a journal if its OP talking about how bad they want a dog dick up their ass, or any fantasy material that isnt actually OCs or fictional characters. Unwatched several people because of how bad it was over the years.
Its a convenient feature for many of us, and bids to describe it as authoritarian or "censorship" are about as laughable as the guy I read about who believed brushing his teeth with salt would contribute to better dental health.
Also, if you didnt know FA users use journals to write explicit content or try to do irl hookups...now is the time to consider that marking journals is a good thing, and probably not going to be used to patrol what users say but offer a brief content warning on the journal. If it annoys people off of the site, good. Those types who complain about features like these two loudly and hate it strong enough to leave generally fall into highly controversial categories and produce drama at a significantly higher rate than anyone requesting accessibility options.
Tl;dr this "pointless" feature exists to provide CW or even TW functions thousands of users will find useful, and is ultimately harmless if you follow and respect the TOS.
The accountability?
Plenty of people still rely on and use the rating system for submissions, and the amount of people who incorrectly rate their submissions is vastly outnumbered by the people who do. While stupidity is one of the grand spices of life that keep it funny and worth living, I do believe many users here are not so incapacitated they cant draft in their heads whether what they are writing is something for general audiences, adolescents, or adults. Are you concerned about niche trolling via journal rating misuse? I dont think staff cares about policing a journal marked as "adult" that has body text of "he he poo poo pee pee". AI cant seem to sense jokes, but real human mods can.
Someone describe to me why one thinks staff are going to come down a chimney and behead them if one doesn't rate their journals correctly, as if they have the capacity to do much other than give you a brief warning that can clearly be appealed if a mistake was made. Everything points to that historically for what Ive observed of staff prior to and after dragoneer died. Also-- they are not so stupid as to come riding down the halls torches blazed for journals that were submitted prior to this update in a retroactive crusade. That is simply an erroneous consumption of time and resources they do not have with the amount of active registered users. They probably have notes that say "if we get a ticket for something and it was written prior to the update, and the user last logged in a year ago...this cant be viewed as a wannabe bannable offense, sorry"
Questions about "accountability" on a website with such a horrid history of simply not doing anything even if there *are* violations from users, is not practical with such a small staff. FA is not a corporation, a social media one at that. They dont have the power to come after you, and never will unless there is a full sell out. Now. If we're talking about people bothering to *use* the system correctly....that type of accountability is not the true target of this update. The true target of this update is people who will use the rating system correctly or want it, not staff hunting for bigoted trolls who describe graphic content and smugly hit "submit" when they intentionally set the rating to "G". Those types just start drama and then accuse others of starting drama who reasonably get upset. I simply believe if staff is able to encounter and process that type of character, they should fall on the 3 strike rule prior to an immediate ban unless the contents written were so explicit and concerning, the FBI party van is now parked streetside.
Tl;dr x2: We have to relax about this and some celebrate we can now go back to journal smut rp If we want and it wont be "general audiences"
You've been handed a bigger rating scale and you complained about the burden of responsibility, like someone in a didactic novel leaving Eden and going mad from freedom.
But yeah. That's why. Now you can swear and bring up sexy topics in journals.
So there's that :3
And then after that it never ends well, unless you're the one in the festivities :p
