While not quite as perfect or meaningful as the first I like what this film was trying to say. I think it moved a bit too quick, and some of the callbacks/cameos went on either a bit too long or way too short...but overall I really liked it. It definitely felt a very 'safe' route when compared to how in your face the first was in its messaging...but then this was clearly aimed at a wider international market. Hopefully it will get enough people into watching the first movie that its much more powerful messages will reach more people but one can only hope.
I will say that the fact Ke Huy Quan has ended up having a career revival continues to be an inspiration. I also think the fact that he came to the US as a refugee in the 70's, and has ended up being one of the United States most celebrated and cherished immigrants is something people should keep in mind. It's because of immigrants like him we here in the US have such a rich cultural heritage comprised of many influences from across the globe.
We're a melting pot. That's what makes this country such an inspiring place to live when we're all at our best. When we forget that it's not just a small few that make us great, and forget that many people from many different backgrounds all working together that are what make this country special...that's when we're at our worst.
OK that's enough outta me. Go see the movie.
