Saying goodbye update

My stepmom will be passing soon. In the past month or so she has declined rapidly from the lung cancer. Her daughter and granddaughter were able to visit her for several weeks in November, but had to return to Austria on the 26th. Mom was moved to a nursing facility a week ago, was supposed to be for five days. Her caregiver needed a respite.. She started to decline rapidly two days ago. I went to see her after work and was shocked. Was called at work yesterday and been on n leave. Spent hours with her, she awoke briefly. Smiled and held my hand. Went back to sleep. I went home, just woke up. No word from facility. Will head there soon.

Speaking from my own experience of losing loved ones, you don’t have to be strong or stoic. Cry, hold her hand, tell her you love her, thank her, give her permission to rest (whatever feels true for both of you). There’s no “right” way to do this part, only the way that lets love through.

My sister insisted my mum couldn't hear me in the last day but I talked with her and gave her our personal. send off and she responded in kind, to my sisters astonishment, and she went home.
If you would like an ear, I'm here.
Blessed be
There's no way to make it easy.
A few seconds, before it was over, her hands came up above her and it seemed like she was listening to a symphony in her head and conducting, like she always did.
I'm glad your stepmom got to see you though. That's the only thing you can do now, is let her know you're there and loving her.
The hardest part is that it's not like Hollywood depicts. It's an agonizingly slow process, and you want to be there when they finally pass, but they usually go in the wee hours of the morning, or when you've just stepped out of the room for a few minutes.
"Softly, I will leave you softly
For my heart would break
If you should wake to see me go.
So I'll leave you softly
Long before you'll miss me
Long before your arms can beg me stay
For one more hour
One more day.
After all the years
I can't bear the tears
That fall so softly...
I will leave you there,
I will leave...you...there..."
