Rambling about Avatar 3...

General
MINOR SPOILERS AHEAD.
- The biggest pro of this movie, is that it allowed me to forget for 190 minutes or so that we're all going head first towards fascist techno-feudalism. Welcome to cyberpunk kids, minus the fun stuff. Fuck, I sometimes wish I had never been born...
- It's thankfully not a remake of Avatar 2.
- BUT (Gosh, I almost forgot), what was the point to call it FIRE AND ASH if 90% of the story takes places anywhere BUT the volcano (which you saw on the trailer...That's the only shot of it in the entire movie I think).
- The pacing as well as the movie is slightly better, but this is not Return of the King: it's still the weakest movie of James Cameron, on par with Avatar 2.
-Still above anything from the MCU, but not by much, with some great action scenes.
- Technically it's PERFECT.
- First third of the movie is okay but not groundbreaking.
- Second third is boring.
- Then an amazing action scene that involves infiltration and escape sets in motion the third act. That and the first big action scene are the best parts of the movie BY FAR.
- Then cue the biggest battle scene James Cameron has ever done, but unfortunately too much might be too much: it's not as good as the Way of Water climax, and it involves again saving the talking whales I simply absolutely do not care about at all.
- Varang is such a weak antagonist despite an immense potential (more about that below).
- Quaritch is still somewhat cool and charismatic, and his arc takes some unexpected turns while still feeling...Incomplete.
- Any fan fic that you come up with in your mind these past few years is likely superior.
- Neytiri doesn't go insane and never fall to the dark side despite all the cues leading to that, so forget about her deciding to genocide the human race and Jack trying to stop her. She does a 180 in the middle of the movie in just a few minutes.
- More infuriating is Jack doing a full 360 in the spam of 5 minutes, like a stupid spaghetti slurping cretin.
- Jake also does another 180 at the beginning of the movie: so much for saying to Lo'ak "I see you" at the end of the second movie.
- It doesn't feel like the end of a trilogy, nothing is really resolved...
...- I'll very likely be back on day one for Avatar 4...
What I mean is, if this was any random blockbuster it would be above average...Or maybe, on the contrary, people wouldn't be so kind towards it and we're making excuses for Cameron.
It's not bad. It's just above average, which coming from Cameron it's quite disappointing, just like Avatar 2. But I'll rewatch it a second time one of these days and in 3D, to see how I really feel about it.
It doesn't take too many risks, or very few. There are no surprises, or very few.
Maybe if director's cut of these two movies are released, with enough extra scenes, some fan edits might be able to fix all of this...
Not to blow my own horn, but this is motivating me to figure out a way to find enough time to properly tell you guys "Kylian's Adventure" since I feel that what I have works better in terms of stakes, character arcs, emotion beats, etc...Obviously I'm just talking about the mere story in here, I'm not pretending I can go and and direct a movie.
Regarding the technical aspect it's really really REALLY good. Amazing visuals, you forget you're watching CGI, readable action scenes with no shaky cam.
As for the epic big ending battle, despite all the characters present on screen, ships and explosions, it felt somewhat dull and boring compared to the whole climax of Avatar 2 which seemed perfect in comparison (great creative set pieces, with the right amount of drama and conflict). Here it feels like every time a good idea starts it doesn't live to its full potential and is discarded for another little set piece: there's no buildup, no tension, everything seems rushed.
Just to give you an idea, see the scene where Ripley is going back to rescue Newt at the end of Aliens? Imagine if that whole part was rushed and told in 2 minutes. That's how all the tiny action scenes felt during the climax.
My biggest grip is Varang: I feel the trailers and posters simply lied to us. What was the point of building her so much if she's not the main antagonist, barely a secondary antagonist, and more like a crazy sidekick with an amazing set of dual blades she...Never use? It's quite a wasted potential, she's barely in the movie, doesn't have a proper fight scene, her character arc seems to be going nowhere, and her best scenes are only at the beginning.
One funny thing though: can't be sure because of the dubbing, but I feel Cameron found a way to have Sigourney Weaver yell her iconic "get away from her you bitch!" at some point!

Es como si todo estuviera construido para que Quaritch se robe el show aunque sea de forma accidental

Ya, casi casi :/ Me esperaba a que Varang reemplazase a Quaritch.

Were there any foot scenes just curious? >.>

Let’s just say there are one or two close ups that might peek your interest. And a super short tickle scene that makes the Na’vis canonically ticklish!
