My Thoughts on Animal Captivity

Lately, I've been seeing posts on Facebook and Instagram talking about my country Canada proposing a bill banning the "new" captivity of great apes and elephants. Personally, I have mixed feelings when it comes to how we keep wild and exotic animals in captivity. I don't consider myself a vegan or a vegetarian by any means, and I don't agree with much of what certain so-called animal rights activist groups like PETA have been doing over the years, while at the time time, I'm not a fan of circuses or roadside attractions that exploit and mistreat their animals for the sole purpose of "entertainment". It's part of the reason why I didn't like Marineland where they kept those orcas in small tanks and forced them to do tricks in front of a crowd of spectators. I would love to see one of my favorite animals in person one day, especially an endangered species like an orangutan, but I'd rather support a kind of zoo, aquarium, or animal sanctuary where they stand for conservation, take really good care of the animals, give them some enrichment, and keep them well fed.
Honestly speaking, I am not that type of person who would advocate for the closure of all zoos and aquariums in the world. I mean, it would be nice if we were able to set those animals free in the wild where many would argue they belong. But what if the animal's natural habitat was disappearing rapidly due to overhunting and deforestation?
