I have no video editing software. and this makes me sad. editing is so fun!!!
i dont remember what we used back in school (2012), and legit back then id edit on the built in windows one at home.
ive tried a few after that but most of them lag for me
when i was in artschool (2020) they had the photoshop one, it was so smooth to use, but i cant afford that shid.
davinki resolve ive heard much good about but my computer explodes when i try to use it...
do you have any software (preferrably free, but if not atleast a 1 time payment)you use that u can swear by? i legit just need to be able to cut video to music on a timeline, and that the program doesnt eat too much juice.. help!!

FA+

that being said...... i do lots of video editing, tho i do have a gaming laptop that runs windows, so our mileage might vary. most of my programs are from the Abode™ flock! i've adopted from these breeders in the past, and can vouch for them: w14[.]monkrus[.]ws & rutracker[.]org/forum
Premiere Pro is good, but may well contain too much juice... then again, davinki exploded my computer too so (shrug) possible that davinki just likes exploding computers.
hope thats helpful!!
I started using Open Shot, but certain things about it wasn't clicking with me so I moved onto ShotCut and I'm having a way easier time. They have so many export options too, but I will warn you it does look overwhelming when you first open it up, but once you familiarize yourself with the layout you know what to filter out visually.
I think the reason I moved was because OpenShot consistently made the fan in my computer go off even for small videos while exporting. Meanwhile Shotcut only ever did that at the end of the exporting process or for something I did that was 8 minutes long.
Both are free and open source and will do what you want it to do, give them both a try.
Just be aware ive had it crash on me multiple times so save often
To edit videos: Capcut but only version 3.6 because it's not so paid
Kdenlive is a free option as well and no paid content
To JUST cut video parts without conversion, on the fly:
AVIDEMUX
Also i agree with Luca017 about Avidemux for extremely simple, basic edits
