Hello whoever, this is a journal where I vent a bit.
So, Discord is apparently looking to put in stupid age verification nonsense in their app next month. https://aftermath.site/discord-age-verification/
Gave a link, but here's the basics of it. Discord apparently thinks that its easily breached databases deserve your sensitive info and face pics for some reason. Why? Because apparently Discord forgets that their primary user is the 18 to 50 year old furry, I guess. That's not an insult, I can't remember the last time I met someone under 18 on Discord.
So yeah, of course cancel your Nitro and get some Death Stranding screenshots, or whatever. I gotta be honest, I haven't been trusting Discord in ages, use has mostly been begrudging. People chose not to get on Guilded, and the Roblox guys took that over. People chose not to get on Revolt, now it's Stoat and has to clarify that it's not using GenAI code. Telegram got taken over by the worst people, and I don't think anyone wants to go back to Skype if it still exists.
So, now what? Is Stoat the alternative we want now that it's not using GenAI (at least I hope they aren't) or can we find another one?
I just don't want to have to put my face into Discord, because fuck that.

Problem is...they don't see this as a moral thing, they see this as something they can take advantage of, and profit off of...
But yeah, seems like we're all low-key pretty screwed. The closest thing(s) I can think of are Stoat, Rocket[dot]Chat, and Matrix. None of them seem very newcomer-friendly, but at the very least they can take advantage of Discord's stupidity and get themselves some new traffic.
I wish we could do something like Forums or Reddit, but even if the sites are (structurally) pretty good, that "type of" website attracts a pretty unfortunate crowd.
As one of the few people who extols the virtues of Free and Open Source Software and Decentralized Social Media Platforms: We need something centralized and secure so normal users can easily wrap their heads around it. I can't just say, "Hey, let's pick up Lemmy or MBin"; we need something that functions like what people are familiar with, and won't betray them for corporate appeal.
