Where to Find Me if Discord goes Under (update #2)
General
Hey everyone. I've created layers of contingency and Decentralized My Online Alias for online Instant Messaging Chatrooms.
(Feb 20, 2026: See Update #1 at the bottom)
(Feb 22, 2026: My Linktree now lists my Aliases for all Four platforms.
(Feb 27, 2026: If you would like to join my other Chatrooms on Fluxer, Matrix, Signal and/or Stoat, you can use my contact info on Link Tree to friend request me. Please give me advance notice such as a Comment, Email, or FA Note!)
This Section is primarily intended for United States Citizens.
Discord, as you know, was my home for the last decade or so. Despite my servers having been purged once in 2020, I maintained a strong Discord-Centric community and avoided Telegram for it's obvious vulnerabilities such as the phone number requirement and lack of any Encryption excepting private, specifically initiated 1:1 chats. Discord is a leaky ship, the NSA (National Security Agency) since the Patriot Act was penned has always had ready access to your DM's, and now DHS (Department of Homeland Security) which includes Border Patrol and Customs (responsible for both fatal shootings in Minneapolis) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) will be likely accessing that material through third parties such as Palantir.
Discord plans to run Adult Age Verification through one of Palantir's sub-companies, a contractor known as Persona. This vendor has already leaked information multiple times, and such technologies chased me off of Patreon back in late 2022. The fact of the matter is that the U.S.A. is rapidly becoming a Fascist Dystopia with substantial government and private industry resources dedicated towards the mass surveillance of the public and correlative cross-referencing of private data. This totalitarian regime of our current Federal Government plans to weaponize DHS to detain, then disappear, undesired persons of which have already historically included journalists, activists, tax-paying citizens, and people who were applying for citizenship (a 3-5 year long process). DHS has intentionally caused multiple deaths both within detention facilities and of course famously in the streets of Minneapolis where they openly murdered two people.
I cannot allow my community spaces to become weaponized by the current Administration. If Discord actually implements any age verification technologies requiring Facescan or Legal Identification, I am shutting down my Discord Servers as soon as possible. I will not be party to the Totalitarian, Fascist motherfuckers and their planned mass-scale genocide. You should not either. If you are a Citizen of the United States of America, I beg you to seek alternative chat clients and delete your discord account as soon as you can.
US-Specific section over.
For international observers and people who bothered to read this far, here are the options I can provide:
I have decentralized my online Chat options to FOUR separate clients, with small spaces provided for each. These are general spaces, and I need people to start joining them before I develop them any further into my portion of the fandom's specific preferences. The options are:
Fluxer (My #1 Pick): Fluxer is a Sweedish developed chat client resembling Discord which has the most promise as it is not hosted in the UK where ID Laws are being aggressively pursued and implemented. Subject to GDPR, and featuring an Encryption system that runs in a way that prevents middle-man attacks, it is not perfectly private but has options to host content separate from their servers, and is actively under development with a growing featurelist. It is likely funded in party by grants provided by the Sweedish Government, which appears to be doing such grants as a strategic measure to protect itself from US-dominated software control and cloud computing. Fluxer was having issues with input lag and server inconsistency when I signed up today and it remains somewhat unstable, which may require time to rectify (the same can be said of Stoat). Allegedly, Fluxer can integrate into Mastodon servers with a Bridge and if this remains a supported feature, it will remain my #1 recommendation until something can properly compete with its UIX (user interface experience) and feature list.
You can download it here.
Matrix (#2): Matrix is a Federated Open Source Software (FOSS) which technically features End to End Encryption and relative privacy and security through being readily deployed through a variety of clients and options, including self-hosting and even self-programmed chat clients. The two leaders are Element (UK based) and FluffyChat (Germany based), though both present their own problems in clunkiness, platform-specific limitations, and a host of other points of friction. I currently use Element and the primary Matrix server instance which again depends on UK infrastructure, meaning, it could be shot down immediately and the Element client forced to implement ID checking. That would be game-over for Element, and I'd have to self-host. Fluffychat's Client is the best Mobile Application for Matrix as an option, but it might have some difficulties inherent to its status as a product of a German citizen (Germany has some laws which may make it not a safe haven). There are allegations that Matrix is a compromised platform, claimed by a Mastodon user named Soatok Dreamseeker, who has multiple posts about security vulnerabilities in Matrix, not all of them are listed on their blog. I don't have the tech know-how to fully understand the technical details even when explained to me, just know Matrix has vulnerabilities and issues, and it seems the EU is investing in it as an option. Matrix remains my #2 pick because of familiarity and established history, plus a security-focused tech-savvy friend set up an instance and assured me it's relatively secure.
Matrix's list of Clients you can download
I use Element, at the time of writing.
Fluffychat is recommended for mobile users.
Signal (#3): Signal is that application everyone uses for End to End Encrypted, relatively secure chat. It is however in the US, and that immediately makes the software somewhat of a liability if it is put under pressure or sanctioned by the Government. For a time, a branch of it called Session was the go-to, but my understanding is that Session is no longer the desired option. Signal's E2E however appears to be robust enough that if audited, they would not be able to actually provide data on users (they do not decrypt or access any message or call options). Your phone is required to operate Signal, meaning that it can be a hassle to implement (I had to follow their many FAQ's and guides on Signal not working for my phone to finally work, including a restart), and the desktop app depends on your phone operating to send and receive messages. That can be expensive, if you have data limitations, so it's not a recommended option insofar as general purpose. Signal also likes to advertise your account to everyone in your phone's contacts like Telegram, but you can disable this during set-up, rather than having to set up your account then scramble to disable the feature. You can establish a Username Alias through the settings under your Profile, which allows you to send and receive friend requests without sending your phone number out. I recommend that configuration for your own sake.
You can download the Desktop App here but will have to run the Mobile version first to then sync the app to your phone.
Stoat (#4): Formerly Revolt, Stoat is a Discord-like which features incomplete documentation on self-hosting and a GitHub repository which I'm sure someone could interrogate for security vulnerabilities. Stoat however does not feature any Encryption that I know of, and is also based in the UK like Element. This makes Stoat exceedingly likely to be put in the UK Government's crosshairs as they clamp down on freedom of expression with increasingly dystopian and authoritarian policy. One such vote I'm told is coming up soon, and provided the House of Commons doesn't reject it robustly, it is possible that the primary branch of Matrix, the Element client for Matrix, and Stoat will all be splashed with Legal ID or Face Scan collection requirements for all users. If this is the case, it obviously is just another weapon against us and will no longer be viable for me. As you can gather, Stoat's lack of encryption and general lack of deploy-ability are non-sellers for me. It does have a github repository, it does have features that are under development, it's got 4 years of legs as Revolt (their website hasn't all updated to the new name, but tldr they got sued and had to change names). Back when I first encountered Revolt they had a firm anti-pornography ToS, which as since been redacted, hidden, or minimized. I don't trust easy, and the North remembers, so we're not promoting it except by necessity. It is a functional piece of software that may become a better contender with time and good fortune.
Stoat works for nearly everything, download is here.
Conclusion: Discord and Telegram enjoyed domination over peer to peer instant messaging for the last decade, roughly, and both are firmly under pressure by governments like France, Russia, Germany, the UK, Australia, and the USA to reveal details about the people who use the services for purposes of "protecting children". Where we get funny is that these applications as they contort themselves and change the rules on their userbases and communities are increasingly asserting that you prove you are an adult. Account exist for over 8 years? You could have been 9 and lying about your age (despite these tending to need users to be aged 13+ to install), even though you have paid for premium services in the past with a credit card (almost universally requiring age 18+ to use). These changes are not innocent nor harmless. These are active steps made to collect even more personal information to identify you to the governments of the world, so that you can personally be held accountable for unwanted conduct such as criticism, thought crime, or spreading dissent amongst peers.
As seen in the USA and UK, the blanket weaponization of "Radicalism" has been leveraged against everyone who doesn't bend the knee to the current administrations' agendas where every citizen is identified and surveilled constantly for wrongthink, where your once-legal actions of free expression are increasingly scrutinized for context-free red flags which they can contort into hallucinated legal charges so that the state's police apparatus (increasingly manned by unidentifiable, untrained goons) can detain you and force you into a concentration camp or for-profit prison. Now is not the time to pretend like the alarmingly prescient rise of Authoritarian Fascism in the USA and UK isn't happening, doesn't affect you, and doesn't matter. It does matter. Direly so. If you are reading this, you are in the crosshairs. If you are on this website, you are in the crosshairs. If you've ever so much as viewed a singular piece of my artwork, you are in the crosshairs. The first step on the Survive-ability Onion is "Do Not Be There", followed by "Don't be Detected". We cannot prevent either of those. We are now at step three: "Don't be acquired or identified".
The step that follows is "Don't be hit". You can imagine in this case, that might be much more salient a risk for members of the USA and UK Public who are facing unprecedented aggression and information gathering by their Government's law enforcement actors. But it applies to us all.

FEB-26-2026 Update #1: Stoat and Fluxer are both experiencing capacity issues, with Fluxer's capacity problems being far worse. Word on the street is there may be a technical hurdle with Fluxer's implementation of HTML, which hopefully should be mitigated sometime in a few days or a week. Stoat is more stable server-wise but has less UIX developed, meanwhile Fluxer's servers are very unstable and has plenty of already-working features. You never get to have it easy, so pick your favorite to use but don't over commit to either.

FA+

Fluxer is very new, and in the era of vibe coding and rug pull scams, they felt it might be safe to not put all their chips on it. It could be legit, but it could be a thing full of security holes and/or a scam.
Matrix has an interesting proposal, but it requires folks to be a bit more careful with their security - if you lose your encryption keys you lose your account. And as long as it is somewhat user-hostile to “get in” you might have little adoption. (It’s still the one I’m most interested in trying however)
