Regarding my use of Discord in the future
a month ago
General
Following Discord's decision to enforce adult user authentication via ID card or similarly despicable methods starting next March, I'm considering alternatives...
Maybe I won't delete the account altogether since I might still enjoy DMs or some server updates as a "default teen" account, but depending on how things go down, I will probably go very quiet if not completely inactive inside various servers I'm currently in. Because on top of all that, Discord also announced they'll deploy AI tools to sieve through messages and media in order to label servers as SFW or NSFW... and I'm not particularly fond of the idea of my messages feeding the AI for machine learning and decision-making in that regard.
For now nothing changes as I wait to see if Discord follows through with their plan or if they backtrack shortly after due to fleeing users.
So far I only had 1 small public server I mostly used as a mirror server for my art posts and updates, and already had a Telegram channel for the exact same purpose anyway (all links on profile page or pinned messages), so not a big loss there... but I could potentially lose access to friends' and artists' servers I was quite fond of.
I'm also undecided on what could be a good Discord alternative for me in case I decide to move away from it... and that will probably be influenced by whatever platform my buddies will flock to lol. I see some are already going to Telegram, which plenty in the fandom already have, though right now it doesn't have a nice server structure like Discord has, plus it requires your phone number to make an account and that can discourage some people. I hear Revolt/Stoat seems a better alternative, except it's servers are currently hosted in the UK, the country that basically started this whole "protect the minors" facade so imho it's only a matter of time before Stoat is also forced to comply to UK law and ID check its users.
Whatever happens, I encourage you to not share your ID or personal photo to Discord since they have a recent history of getting hacked and leaking over 70k IDs.
[WARNING: Rant section, ignore if you wish]
Besides, this is not about protecting children, it's about control... how is this policy protecting the children when by default all new accounts will be considered “teen”, so pedos can just create fake accounts and automatically be grouped together with their target demographic?! So much for not accidentally stumbling upon a NSFW server and ruining your childhood, good grief!
How about you stop delegating your parenting to governments and corporations uh?
You can't protect your children from NSFW content forever either: there will come a time when hormones kick in and your now curious adolescents will start looking for answers to their naughty questions, and if you as a parent can't be there or be trusted with that, guess where they'll go searching for answers...?
