Is it necessary to have a CPA AND a fractional CFO?

I'm trying to understand if I need both a CPA and a fractional CFO for my business, or if one can handle the responsibilities of both. What are the key differences in their roles and responsibilities, and are there situations where it makes sense to have both on board? Seems like could be redundant to have both.

That's a really relevant question for a lot of growing businesses. While there might be some overlap, their core functions are pretty distinct. A CPA is primarily focused on compliance, tax preparation, and ensuring financial statements are accurate. A fractional CFO, on the other hand, is more focused on financial strategy, planning, and helping you make better business decisions based on your numbers. I read something about fractional cfo services that explained the difference very well.

I think it really depends on the needs and size of your company. For really small businesses, a good CPA might be able to handle a lot of the strategic stuff too. As operations become more complex, that is when you can start seriously differentiating what each roles should handle.
