What makes a good story?

It needs to have more than just a cookie-cutter setting, but the setting isn't the big thing. I think the big thing is the characters, the way they think and act, what they have to say. Because really, the plot-lines of a lot of Shakespeare's plays don't require the settings that Wm. Shakespeare put in to be compelling. The relationships between people and the people themselves, that's where it's at.
