Why is fchan so evil? D:

Alright, the big question now is: Why do something that inherently violates artist's rights as laid down by the spirit of the law?
Personally i must say that i agree actually, could save a lot of time and hassle for me and some others by shutting it down, especially as there are replacements around. However these replacements are the big problem.
Fchan is the one big player in the block and the others are largely insignificant compared with the usage fchan gets. If fchan shuts down though, people would invariably migrate to these. The big difference between fchan and those candidates is now, that fchan tries and gives artists as much control as realistically possible, while they completely disregard artists and seem to be successful with it, or even worse, pretend to give artists control, while not giving them ANY control at all.
If and when such a migration happens, furry artists would lose any control and be forced to actually sue (with real money) sites that are ready to fight back and have done so in the past rather successfully. Thus a closing of fchan, or even admin/moderator actions that trigger such migrations, are a bigger threat to the community of furry artists than the continued existence of it. If i were to do any of these things, i would hurt ALL furry artists, instead of only a select few who have been careless.
And in case some think this is merely my way of excusing myself. It is very much not so. It is the basis on which i am allowed to continue doing what i do. Which is working for the artists (keeping the DNP list upright and respected, crit board, artist board, artist banners). There is a rather powerful force (both financially and influentially) that is keeping watch and standing at the ready to destroy fchan as well as me if i were ever to stray from that course.
It took me a long talk with said power to bring this into a form that can be publicised, since i need to protect their identity and more importantly: Publicising this in a wrong manner would in itself be a danger as well.
I simply hope that this can bring a bit more understanding for the situation that i and fchan are in and for the way things are done.

Dragoneer said himself that he would stop supporting Fchan the day he saw that it does not uphold artsist's rights. I hope he understands what your first statement means.
The lesser of two evils philosophy fails for one very simple reason: it's still wrong. Yes, the other sites would be out there, but doing the same thing with a little more rules and calling it a GOOD thing is as you say, making excuses. You don't have to be careless to be hurt by Fchan, you just have to not know about it, or have your signature edited out.
The alternative is to actually stand together as a community and set an example as to how the fandom expects its artists to be treated. Right now there is a 50/50 acceptance that people will take and distribute art. It's just as simple to take and copy art and call it yours, but that's frowned upon, even if the damages are similar. By offering a site that encourages something, you're telling people it's okay to do. But you yourself say that the general practice "inherently violates artist's rights as laid down by the spirit of the law". If you shut down will people still do it? Yes, but if people actually work together in the fandom to tell people it's wrong, at least it would not be advertised as acceptable as an alternative to copyright law.
I understand your stance, but it is the stance of someone who thinks poorly of a community and thinks nothing better can be done. If Fchan went legal, and set an example, and the leaders of the community and everyone in it leaned on the other sites, at least people would know that yes, taking and distributing art that isn't yours IS wrong and the community stands for what is right.
Regarding your first statement: You seem to be in need of considering the following concepts: "spirit of law", "letter of law", "reality of law" and "intent of action".
Aside from that i'm not willing to waste any more time on an individual who thinks it's a funky idea to apply idealism in order to determine actions in reality.
That what you think you are doing is right is your opinion; it is not the opinion of everyone. You know it is still a violation of artist's rights, you said so yourself. It is not your place or right to make the decision on the behalf of artists what is the best way to handle a bad situation.
*waves* Until next time.
You're dealing with artists. You know, the group of people are are so often given tags like 'sniveling,' 'hopelessly idealist' and 'demanding,' being not at all undeserving of such descriptors as a collective? You could hand them the world on a silver platter, and they would complain it wasn't gold. There is literally no amount of provisions you will ever be able to make to satisfy even a majority of them, so get it out of your head immediately. Yes, you can do things to make it better, but you'll never truly be able to make it good.
Of course, on the other hand, there are the ones that make up the slight majority of the viewing audience of fChan, who can be described as antagonistic, selfish and undeserving. These are the ones who complain about an artist's skills to their face, demand more of something they receive for free, and can't seem to get it in their heads that art doesn't come from nowhere. And while I wish to death that artists would figure out that posting art on the internet is exactly equal to posting it up on a brick wall in New York, even a carefree hobbyist like me sometimes wants to make those leech-like social amoebas eat their own elbows.
And that's what I think of that.
(You have no idea how often some of the mod team would like to physically torture the latter kind. ;) )

actually i'm on fchan's DNP and last week again, some of my works were posted in /toon/.
so in resume, you only control what you can, and what you know. that huge DNP list has no purpose because true imageboards like 4chan, anonIB, lulz or 7chan will allow to find the contents any furry lurker will want to get.
finally, fchan is just good for the weird cub porn, weird scat fetishes and kids in need of an ego fix, but it's not because of the people who post here, there's weirdos evrywhere, it's just your rules that enables this kind of content, otherwise, theres better out there !
oh, whatever, im loosing my time trying to explain the concept of a *chan and the philosophy behind it. that's all.
