Art hero meme
So, I was talking with
ssirrus on dude's post about how to survive being an artist, and the idea that we can all learn a lot from looking at established artists both contemporary and historical, inside and outside of the furry fandom came up.
I know I've learned a ton and been heavily influenced by some of my art heroes, and I assume that goes for everybody here. I figured that a meme like this could be a great way to both see which artists have inspired and informed the people here, and to learn about some awesome new artists myself! Which brings me to...
Art Hero Meme!
In no particular order, list FIVE artists (furry or otherwise, contemporary or historical) who you feel have greatly influenced your growth as an artist, along with a link to one piece by each that you feel represents their work! (For those who don't know the tags here, just type [ url = (the URL) ] the artist's name [ /url ], but without the spaces!)
1. JC Leyendecker
2. James Jean
3. Sam Weber
4. Claire Wendling
5. NC Wyeth
Bonus 6 who everybody already loves so it barely counts: Alphonse Mucha (okay and also Yoshitaka Amano)
I have failed to follow the rules of my own meme. Hopefully
ssirrus will behave better.

My heroes though would all have to be writers.
Harder to do for writers though; could only find their works on Chapters website and such :P
he was my roommate's favorite artists in college. to this day something just doesn't sit right with me about his figures.
but his lines. HIS LINES. and design work. dear sweet lord <3
and oh yes yes wyeth. him and his son :]
this is a great little meme and i'll have to give it a try!!
And yeah! NC and Andrew Wyeth are both totally faves <3
DUDE YOU HAVE TO DO THIS OMG I'm really curious to hear who your heroes are (plus I have a couple of guesses and want to see how close I am!)
wait, there is one more: Bob Ross.
And I really like Hopper, too! I remember being at the National Gallery in DC during a big Turner show and being kind of bored (I know that makes me a bad person), and then seeing that they had a little Hopper show going in a side gallery and getting all excited ^_^
And say what you will about Bob Ross, he is still Bob freaking Ross. He taught people that they can do it if they just, you know, do it.
Haha, he's married to Jillian Tamaki, who is another totally awesome illustrator.
Also, do you know Emmanuel Malin and Véronique Meignaud? Because their stuff is French and also rad <3
I did it. <3
claire wendling is my idol
dunno who the rest are, I'm gonna have to do some homework
Try to imagine that happening nowadays, haha 9_9
And Wendling's lines pretty much devastate my face. I'm happy to point her out here because I've found she's kind of an "artist's artist" in the sense that the only people who I've met who have also known her have been other artists. I feel like more people should check her stuff out and learn <3
you can totally see 'gorgeous model' in like... 70% of what leyendecker has
wheres MY gorgeous model D:
gil elvgren was pretty kickin with the oils too
omg wendling has literally rocked my socks, I don't think I'd be in sheridan if it wasn't for her influence, and you're right, she seems well known by the more committed artists I've met
somehow found her blue and red book for 40$ <333
But yeah, she's amazing.
: >
Pollock
Picasso
Yoshitoshi
Hanna-Barbera
Likely no surprises there.
Also not surprising because, you know, we've had this talk before <3
And like I say, it could be awesome for writer folk to do this meme with their author heroes, too! The folks who watch you because they read your work would probably be interested to hear about where they can find stuff in a similar vein, and I'm sure the folks who watch you because they're writers themselves would be curious to see some of your influences/inspirations ^_^
(Okay, maybe I'll give the meme a go...)
And good!
And I can definitely see the influences of Sam Weber and NC Wyeth in your recent works (particularly your collaborations with Creely).
This is definitely a great meme. It's always really interesting to see what inspires others, and more importantly it broadens an artists knowledge of other artists so that they can develop themselves. Great idea Kamui. I'm going to have to get onto this myself at some point. c:
And that's super nice of you to say
I mostly did it because I'm curious to learn about new artists, and to learn what goes into the work of some of the other artists around here <3
And you should totally do it! I'd be curious to read your responses.
And João Ruas, the guy who's taken over since Jean stopped doing the covers, is also a really cool artist ^_^
Another an astounding artist is http://www.gnosis.art.pl/iluminator.....9QSVg43bCg&
Oh yeah, I recently found Ben Templesmith. His art is nothing short of fantastic, demented, and cool.
I bought his graphic novel. It is a bit too much for me, but I still admire the art and the odd humor.
I've got too many art heroes. It'd fill an entire page.
Could I put you on there? :3
