Mythicals take over MAG for the PS3
I've been totally hooked on MAG. And my gryphoness has been enjoying watching me play it. So much so that she became curious about trying it herself. She's said that she's no good at that kind of game, but it looks like so much fun when I play it.
So I handed her the controller. She ran through the training tutorial, and then from there... well... it's an online only game... and the _smallest_ battles are 64 players... most of whom are seasoned hard core FPS nerds. So I was telling her... okay... you're going to get killed a lot. And that's true for anyone starting out in online FPS's... especially with no prior FPS experience at all. There's no easy setting to learn on first. So you will be doing great if you get one kill out of the entire round.
On only her second round, she already had a 1.5 K/D ratio. By her fifth round, she'd pulled a 4.0 K/D and unlocked a trophy for it. Geezus!
Apparently a gryphoness with a sniper rifle is a frightening thing.
She was positively giddy as she popped off mammal heads.
So, I went out the next day and bought a second HD TV to put in the game room. Setup a second PS3. She built the stand. And off we went playing MAG together.
The game really supports playing with your friends well. I remember the old Battlefield 2 days when it was a struggle to get everyone on the same server and same team and all that. In MAG, it just knows what you're going to want to do and does it for you automagically. Even automatically puts you in the same squad together with your friends and everything. No fuss. This game was clearly made by people who seriously understand the dynamics of friends and multiplayer.
So yeah... we played late into the night with a dragon and a gryphoness fighting side by side. It was so romantic.
If other people want to get in on this action, we could start getting a squad going.
Edit: I keep forgetting to mention that I'm a Raven player.

FA+

Killzone 2 is still the most beautiful FPS I've played. The intensity and realism of it is just breath taking.
MAG has the best game play of any FPS I've played. And this is because there is so much concentration on making 256 player battles actually work. The game is built around coordinating all these players so that it's not just a clusterfuck. Back when I was playing Battlefield 2 years ago, most servers were 32 players.. a few were 64. I preferred 16 player servers when I could find good ones. Because they weren't so chaotic, and tactics were more meaningful. The 64 player servers were pretty much pure chaos.
Well, somehow MAG manages to make a 256 player battle feel like a 32 player battle in Battlefield 2 in so far as chaos level. There's _A LOT_ of soldiers on the map. But the command and control structure that the game is built around makes it truly playable... even on pub servers with just random people playing. It doesn't just turn into a crazy clusterfuck. Actual strategy and tactics happen on a regular basis.
im not good in many PVP esp with guns >.> i dunno even what MAG is x.x
Also its nice to see you and your gryphoness have found another common interest, you too surely make a good team. :3
She's getting better at the game at a faster rate than I did when I first started multiplayer FPS games years ago.
She gets a little frustrated at how much she's dying in the game. But she's actually doing very well. MAG has attracted a lot of really tough players to be on the servers all day long. She has all of two days of experience playing multiplayer FPS games at this point. And she's managing to pop off these guys heads at least part of the time already.
She just thinks I'm shining her on when I tell her she's doing really damned good.

*ponders what fighting game to play*
Good times...
Well, I ended up trying Resistance on the PS3 and got hooked on it right away. I couldn't aim for shit, but the game was so good, I kept playing anyway. And over the course of playing through that, I became good at aiming with the controller.
It's a learning curve. But at this point, I'd call myself just as good with either the controller or the mouse. And I wouldn't rate one over the other. The two control schemes have distinct and different advantages over each other. The mouse has an advantage in the speed in which you can aim at a target which is far from your current aim point. And the controller has an advantage in finer control over movement (which matters more than you might think).
I'd recommend to people not to shy away from console FPS games because of the controller.
And I can see that as a valid point, with the advantages of controllers versus keyboard/mouse. Of course, I guess you could say that's the big advantage of the FragFX, which technically has both: the analog stick for movement and the mouse for aiming.
I've been thinking about MAG all day at work and now I can't wait to play again. <3
So you can't do MP on one TV? or did you get two because it's more awesome on two TV's?
If you're interested in a squad, I can certainly talk to my mate about it, as he plays MAG quite a bit as well... and on the side of Raven, as it so happens. In theory I play too, though all I've done is just the tutorial mission. Because I'm la-- errr, 'busy' with other stuff. Yeah, that's it...
well, she does have an eagle eye, doesn't she? *rimshot*
seriously, glad she found a game she loves:)
So can't get it yet unfortunately.
But if I had it, I'd definitely be part of your squad ^_^
BWAHAHAHAHAAHAAA!
