It's like Y!. if it is just nudity or shows some escessive skin, then it would go into the Mature. Adult is for the yiff, hardcore, vore, and anything that wouldn't be shown to the public freely.

Think of it as a school based thing. You would show kiddy and family fun things to Preschoolers in General. In High School you want to go excessive but still be teasing the viewers with Mature art. And Adult is for Colleges with Frat/Sorority houses. ^_^

and if you accidently (emphasis on this) let a Mature or ADult go onto GEneral, you'll get some artist telling you in the comments to change the settings. If you continue this, you'll be given a warning, and maybe a ban from the site. We're a public site, so let's be nice to anyone that views the arts here. ok? ^_^

Well, as any other site, y! isn't perfect either, as should be clear by now. Oh well. :P

And as for the filters, I thought "Adult" was only for explicit sexual scenes or extreme violence etc., so I used "Mature" for most of what I've submitted so far. But I guess I'll use the "Adult" rating more often in the future, to be on the safe side. :3

in my understanding of it g is for nothing shows..no frontal nudity and no violance.. mature is for voilence/ non sexual frontal nudity pg13-R basically..and adult is for sexual nudity, extreme voilence, and outright smut ^.^ nc-17 stuff

I think mature is mild violence and sexual nudity, adult is graphic violence and rampant humping. At least that's what I think, but I also think nipples fall under "all ages", but I'm Dutch and the moderators aren't.
