AVG has a little too much Microsoft dong in it's mouth for my comfort level. I use Avira - despite it popping up a nag window whenever it updates itself I like it.

well, AVG did git rid of a nasty trojan virus for me, so I say it's ok.

AVG is good, but avast! is better. It found stuff AVG did not first time I ran it! And it wasn't false-positives either! Plus, avast!'s free package actually has more goodies in it than AVG's, most'a which I don't consciously use but appreciate nonetheless. Lastly, avast! has actively terminated potentially threatenin' connections from time ta time, so that's always good. :3

Oh! Downside ta avast! is that it seems ta update CONSTANTLY...but ya can set it ta run silently so it doesn't keep poppin' up "has updated" windows. Ya can set it ta try an' update every X minutes, too. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem ta be an "update at this specific time" settin' like there is on AVG, so if ya want it ta update at say...7AM, ya need'a set the timer ta 1440 minutes an' make it update at 7 AM once. It'll kick on at 7 AM every day from then on!

AVG still does a good job!

to be quite honest avg is more trouble than it's worth nowadays* points to a stack of burned out computers that used avg*

oi. i know what i'm doing, and i never said they were my computers in the first place... besides, i've had bad experiences with AVG from when i was younger, so before instantly assuming i am an inexperienced user, listen here.... i have learned mostly from trial and error, anything i have fucked up i have fixed... .well the only exception being my current laptop because i'm not the one that fucked it up.

and second, exaggeration to make a point. i do not use AVG for the sole fact that it allowed past computers belonging to my family members to seriously mess up(virus, hacking, etc)

You might want to try sandboxie then, makes a partition on your HD that's separate from all your other files so if you get any malware you can just wipe the box and you're good as new

Avast! is much, much better than AVG. People are still hopping all over its' dick, but it's stopped being good at all quite a while ago.

As for firewalls... if it doesn't slow your computer down too much and you don't have any problems with it, then keep it. A regular router will block a lot of stuff too. The rest depends on the user. :D
