Well, it's all about the context: considering that the French were oppressing the Mexican people with Baconnaise, the victory that heralded the return of plain mayo was well-worth celebrating!

Guess I'm gonna have to pay Wikipedia a visit and learn more about your election process! About how long do the national elections last there, from the first political TV ads to voting day?

it depends. The current PM can call elections at any time, but the most they can spend in office is 4 years, so naturally national elections here are generally every four years. National elections generally last a couple of months from the first political tv ads to voting day. Pretty much from the day it's announced to be until voting day (with no political ads on voting day). John Key (our current PM) could call elections for tomorrow if he so desired (but he won't unfortunately). Voting age is 18 years here (woo, i can vote and did vote in last elections). Also our government is very different from the brittish one though

my friend over in England seems to feel the Liberal Democratic party will win out - I have no idea what that means but thought I would pass it on.

En Inglaterra los jefes de los Conservatives y los Lib Dems, Cameron and Clegg, estan negociando ahora para hacer un gobierno conjunto. Pero aun no hay un acuerdo, todavia es un 'hump parliament' :S

La verdad el Cinco de Mayo se celebra mas en Estados Unidos que en México XD
No hubo clases en las escuelas, los obreros no trabajaron, muchas tiendas no abrieron... Pero eso fué todo :X
