Red Ring of Death or is it?

I went on the Xbox website hoping to see if i could get mine repaired, unfortunately it said its warranty has expired.
However as i looked at the FAQ and looked at the Red Ring entries i saw two problems that cause the red ring. One is a hardware failure and the other is an issue with the power supply.
The large box thing you get with your Xbox which connects to the mains before your Xbox, the indicator light is orange when the Xbox is off but when i press the power button on the Xbox it turns green which from the website indicates there is a power problem. I did the steps of removing and reconnecting but it still shows green and according to that, the website says my xbox needs repairing but i'm not convinced now. When i turn my Xbox on and that green light appears, i get a funny smell coming from the power box, can anyone tell me if that smell means the power box is screwed and not my Xbox?
If anyone else has had this issue with the red ring and a funny smell coming from your Power Box please let me know if its the Xbox or the Power Box thats fucked, thanks.

Orange means standby.
Red means theres an issue.
However blow into the vent holes to clear any dust out, If it continues to smell, you will have to get a new powersupply.
If you know someone who has one, Remember the newer ones with the plastic ends, will not fit in the xbox's that had the metal ended powersupplys that go into the back of the xbox.
Sounds like a capacitor could have blown.
Do not use it.
I jsut had to take my 360 apart and put new thermal paste on it, the existing stuff had all evaporated D:
those xclamps are buggers to get on and off. :x
