Advice sought on buying a big HDTV
The folk's 25th wedding anniversary is rearing above the horizon, and as my gift to them (but one I must admit I'll also be using quite a bit myself), I'm going to get them a big proper Full HDTV to save them buying one themselves as they plan next year.
I'm leaning towards a plasma TV but I'm looking for advice to make sure I know that it's the best option. From what I can see, a large-ish (40"+) screen is more affordable compared to an equivalent LED. I've done my research, but I'm open to being swayed either way. I'm not too pushed on 3D LED/Plasmas as both parents have poor-ish eyesight and wouldn't be able to view it, while myself and both my brothers have no interest in 3D, viewing it as a bit gimmicky. Plus there's no way to look cool in those glasses.
So, share with me your thoughts and opinions on what makes for the best when purchasing a HDTV, and it'll be much appreciated. Cheers to you all.
Edit: just so ye know, I'm in Ireland, so don't bother going to the effort of pricing them and listing stores, as they most likely will be vastly different here.

In any case, spend $10000 and get an OLED display. Now THEM'S some blacks XD
This article is relevant. If there's one brand I'd recommend on a LCD screen, it's gotta be Samsung. Why? It's something you have to see to want.
Wish you luck.
Personaly, I still use a CRT television, I'm waiting for OLED to drop in price.
I never knew you leave in Iceland. I was under the impression you were in the North America of some place. I think it had to do with where your characters were place and the way you kinda came off. I but never thought you live in Europe. You learn something new everyday.
Me personally I wish they'd show some sort of HD test pattern. Ok I know I'm weird (and old) .
Would an LCD projector be an alternative btw?
SP
And no, projector's out of the question. Nowhere to mount it, nowhere to project it and living room's not big enough for optimum viewing distance.
Plasma has a problem with viewing under anything but really dark, plus a larger form factor.
LED are the beeeee's kneeeeees. Grab 1080p if you're investing that much into a tv >_>
Be sure to calabrate it once you get it home, because store settings are craptacular and everything is cranked way too high.
BTW: I think LCDs are nifty.
In terms of cheep - go to eBuyer

Another issue with plasma TV's in the energy usage is at least double that of a comparable LCD-TV.

Just an example. For the price, you can't beat the size and picture quality. I installed satellite TV for four years and Mitsubishi's TV's were by far the best picture on a TV that cost less than $10,000. In my experience, anyway. :)
