it's called "Other M" so the first letters of the title forms "MOM", it might have something to do with the plot I hear.
I love Metroid, as a matter of fact it is the only franchise nintendo has left that interest me and the game itself looks ok, I just expected more.
When I saw "starfox" on the 3ds list (wich by the way was the only thing worth seeing there in my book) I was surprized given nintendo doesn't give a rats ass about franchises I like anymore since they're so busy working on pets and plummers. Still it was misfortunate to learn it's just an enhanced version of 64... while it looks good, maybe better than the original (since the 3d element of the hardware is indeed interesting), I'm still dissapointed, like I am since the fall of the 64, at nintendo's continuing tendency to play on people's nostalgia in stead of making something new and GOOD.
Like in stead of making a new and GOOD starfox game with oldschool feel to it, fixing the trash that was "sf command" was to the franchise, they just cower and go the old "nostalgia" way re-releasing a game everyone already beat the crap out of cuz it's easy bucks.
People will still buy it, it'll still be somewhat good... but I'll still feel tainted and bad about it no matter what anyone says cuz it's just how I matured and developed expectations. I just don't fit nintendo's audience no more, but still I wished for something decent.
At least the new Kid Icarus game got me smiling in relief on this subject. Such a nice and neglected character with lots of potential. On the bad side, it might get the nintendo milking treatment and I'll lose interest like I lost with all nintendo franchises (and anywhere really, just nintendo in particular).
Metroid Other M = MOM...that's a bit of a stretch by any measure.
Why not Metroid - Oh My! or Metroid - Ombudman's March
Nintendo are in an awkward possition. They built an empire based on their core cartoony franchises. They're a throwback to the 90s style of gaming, where mascots were what mattered to a company.
They can't throw those mascots away now. And rehashing them over and over causes problems too, it seems Zelda is running out of steam with innovations (I'm still buying it though).
I'm staying away from the 3DS though. Nintendo piss me off with their handhelds, releasing something amazing and then maybe 12 months later releasing a slightly more amazing version of the same product. DS - DS Lite - DSi - 3DS. Same with the gameboy. People got a Pocket...then a Pocket Colours...then a Colour. The colour didn't last long before the GBA came out, and then 18 months later that was superceeded by the SP. And a year after THAT the DS was announced.
Sounds like every other consumer electronic company in the world.
Heck, Apple is guilty of it with the iPhone and there are a lot of people who made that complaint about the iPad, with it's features (obvious deficiencies) that will be upgraded (fixed to bring in line with everything else on the market) next year.
Maybe it's just me but Nintendo seemed a lot more prone to it. I know there's always the newest and greatest model to come out, this one WILL complete your life etc...but since there's really only one type of handheld gaming platform out there that's stayed the course, releasing a new one every 18 monbths with just a little but significant upgrade is annoying >.<
So I gave up getting every one and waited for the really BIG release.
I've been olding off on a DS upgrade because
1) My current one works fine.
2) I don't wanna lose my GBA capabilities.
Well, no need for them to rehash mario or other characters that work for their main target audience, it's just that they isolate themselves too much on infants and fans that still fall for the same thing decades later. Only to do sporadic fanservice to keep the fans quiet after a while. It's simple marketing strategy. My beef with Nintendo is that, they became jerks. And that they only make effort to make the "next mario game". Personally I can't stand mario or any character from mario's world for over 10 years. And I won't even start on pokemon. As I said... I'm no nintendo audience.
I used to love the Snes cuz it had variety and that's all I've been following since the variety I like has become Sony's thing and still remains like so.
As for handhelds I personally prefeer the PSP, thou I have a DS.
I'm very open about my undying contempt of DS and how I do hundreds of stuff the DS doesn't. But I'll refrain from that since CC might get sensitive about it. Gotta respect thou.
Still, the 3DS shows much better potential and appeal to me than the standard DS ever did cuz my main gripe with the DS was that it had Saturn graphics and I hated the heavilly pixelated, low rez, dirty 3d graphics the saturn and eventually the DS have... I love 2d games and at least on that, the DS did well for me (I mainly got one to beat Castlevania games). I also avoid most "stylus centered" games. There are games in the criterias I hate on the DS that I happen to enjoy, but I don't enjoy them like I do on the PSP.
Thou in the US the release ratio for games on the psp is reasonably smaller than the releases on the DS, there is usually only one game on the DS that I enjoy out of every 10 released games... sometimes less. On the PSP it isn't the question, thou my criticism is how americans see the PSP wich hurts it so much on this side of the ocean while there are several very cool PSP games that will never leave japan. (like the main 8 gundam games, 2 macross games, some puzzle games I love, queen's blade, etc...)
While I mainly ignore nintendo for the most part, I tend to aquire their consoles once they die (like with the gamecube, I bought it and the only 10 games that interested me) and I belive it won't be different with the wii (thou so far the system only has 5 games that interest me, with some soon to be launched on other systems I do own). Thou I had a very good time with the GBA (thankfully the best version, the SP), I don't say the same about the DS for several reasons and issues even thou I got the version I liked best (the lite), I have no use for the DSi's extra stuff cuz I already do more than it offers on my PSP.
I rarelly go get my DS to take it to college or anywhere I'm going and am going to stand still doing nothing for a long time. Even at night when I'm bored and won't play my PS3 cuz I just need a quick fix, I reach instantly to my PSP due to all the stuff I do in it.
Ok, enough sucking the PSP's very juicy cock for now... But I'm really curious about the PSP2 thou I get a feeling sony isn't going to talk due to their "10 year policy" and currently announced try to revitalize the PSP's popularity in the US (cuz it's just as hot as the DS in japan). Still Sony has to respond to the 3DS since so far we only have rumors on the PSP2's capabilities, rumors are rumors, even thou rumors brew from interviews with people working on it.
It seems the dominant console is the one that caters to all genres that gamers enjoy. Nintendo is going for all ages now, rather than its core gamers. As you said Sony took Nintendo's "Jack of all trades" crown with the PS1 and 2, and they hold it with MS I'd say this gen.
Personally not for me about the 360. Indeed there were an immense wave of multiplataform games, but I look at variety on games I can only get on a console before I buy it. And the 360 doesn't have one franchise I can only play on the 360 that I like.
I'm just picky cuz I can.
Really, there's no point in starting an Xbox vs PS3 vs Wii argument because you're one of those rare gamers tha doesn't give a crap which console is better, preferring to concentrate on which has the games you want to play.
A much healthier attitude to take to the whole thing.,
I'm still dissapointed, like I am since the fall of the 64, at nintendo's continuing tendency to play on people's nostalgia in stead of making something new and GOOD.
just pointing out that as awesome Nintendo's conference was, not a single new IP on the front lines was talked about.
I'm not watching it online at all. I'm watching it on my TV (that cannot get the internet). G4 is covering all the press conferences, as well as showing stuff at the booths.
I wonder if they'll figure out a way to show the 3DS's capabilities.
Announcement let down by 3DS Only announcement.
Pffth, not buying one of them. I'll wait a year or two for the inevitable redesign with improved features.
I have said it :T
Besides that, nothing from nointiendo interests me... :|
Other M (my god what a dumb title) actually surprised me with the number of gameplay types shown.
I love Metroid, as a matter of fact it is the only franchise nintendo has left that interest me and the game itself looks ok, I just expected more.

...carry on...
But shoot Marvel vs. Capcom 3 for me.
And lol they banned me on gamespot because I said the YT video had less lag. What jerks! XD
I wonder if they'll figure out a way to show the 3DS's capabilities.
I find where my TV is, if it's a sunny day, my pointer goes all over the place. Close the curtains and it's fine.
The wiimote uses bluetooth.
Goldeneye nao plx

Or 3DS Lite.
But really, I'm not even a huge Nintendo fan, but their press conference was pretty fuckin great.
