I may sound ignorant but I blame the parents, I would make it VERY clear to my kids (if I had any) that I won't tolerate them being offensive to others regardles who they are talking to online.

They have rights to the service, but there is also a user agreement that goes along with it. and if you go against the user agreement, you lose the right to said service. And It's been a while since I checked, but I'm pretty sure harassment is in there somewheres.

on another note, I like to agree with the "You're in America, learn English" statement, because I live in a town that is about 80% Spanish speaking and It bugs me when I can't explain to people why I cant sell them $50 worth of stuff for $20. then they get pissed off at me and walk away. After 6 years of living here, I learned enough Spanish for basic conversation, but sometimes its frustrating when I cant understand what people are asking. The part that I find funny is the fact that you're NOT in America.

And they don't teach it in school, they learn it from their families and friends.

So if you go to live in New Zealand, where their official language is Maori, but they're all speaking English, You should speak English.

I didn't move here from another country, I've always been here. and as I mentioned in the previous post, I am learning a bit of Spanish. What I'm saying is, it wouldn't hurt them to learn a bit of English.

However, given a thorough examination, Patriotism derives from ignorance.

Patriotism is thinking your country is better than others only because you were born in it. Yes; there must be a sense of belonging, specially from people coming from the same land, but that's where it should stop.

I always saw patriotism as loving your country, and doing what it takes to keep it safe. Of course, I tend to think idealistically.

In any case, they're still terrible people. I imagine that racism does actually stem from an unconcious fear of the unknown, and a want to be more powerful than what they fear.

I think the main reason you get that sort of stuff from the USA more than most places is good old American Exceptionalism™. Basically everyone is raised to believe that they're better than everyone else. Breeds lots of ignorance and hatred of anyone who happens to be Different.

I don't deny we all find racism fun in some situations.

What i'm trying to say here is that a big part of the xbox live community seems to hold a grudge against spanish speaking individuals.

It's not just tongue-in-cheek funny anymore; it gets really personal FOR THEM. I can take a racist joke, i know how to make racist jokes; it's their reaction that baffles me.

No making fun of Mexicans is just to piss you off and throw you off your game. When your pissed we get points. The major targets are players with a German, Russian, and most eastern Europeans. Go to those game and just watch, there are some hardcore racist stuff going on.

As for making fun of whitey it happens so rarely we don't know how respond beyond Bean dip and hat dance jokes. the reason is there are so few we ever hear.

The main demographic for xbox live is middle class, white, American, young guys. This is, statistically, the most vocally prejudiced group in the world. They are more likely to hate any other group and say so, because they come from a country that behaves as if they are the only demographic that matters and it creates a large opening for bigotry and ignorance. When you are American, you are taught that having a majority means having the right answer, at least when you are young. Most people never explore the thought process to that beyond third grade.

I'd apologize, but I'm not that kind of American, I don't do Xbox and I've never played MW2. If it makes you feel any better, I dislike those types of people pretty strongly, myself, despite having belonged to that demographicfor a good chunk of my life.

In the last several years, certain politicians and figureheads have been pushing the idea that illegal immigrants are a huge problem that's going to destroy us etc. etc. And the country they obviously love to target is Mexico, because they've always had a thing about hating Mexico. And of course, the sheeple believe it and latch onto it and breed hate with it.

That they don't know there is a difference between all the countries that speak Spanish is just a part of the ignorance that lets them be brainwashed by the hate-mongers.

This is in fact the real issue. Illegal immigration has been used as a divisive political tool for an incredibly long time in the USA. The fact that the US economy relies on it, that nothing can be done to stop it and the fact that it's nearly impossible to legally immigrate to the US are ignored in order to preserve this convenient scapegoat. Anyone that troubles you regarding what language you speak is basically just a ditto head and is incapable of forming their own opinions.

I didn't want to touch the topic of illegal immigrants because i don't really know much about it, But i guess this totally makes sense.

I think you're missing the point that a country can make its immigration policies as easy or as hard as it wants to and if you're violating those policies then you're a criminal. Those who're trying to get in legally are cheated by those taking the quick criminal route and there are ways of dealing with illegal immigration depending on what people are willing to tolerate.

I tend to see that in a lot of games, people really just don't like hearing others speaking a language they don't know as it is excluding them from the conversation [this is especially true in games that are clearly aimed at people who speak a certain language (like just about any English-only MMO.)]

I'm not defending those idiots, if they are gonna complain they should politely request you speak English on the English servers so that you can be understood by everyone, not insult you over it.

I have spoken english when asked politely to do so; but unfortunately not all of my friends know english; and i can't just ignore them because someone doesn't like my language.


MW2 "servers" aren't language specific, and even the translated client versions get carried into same matches. There is no "speak english please" sign anywhere, and there shouldn't be.

I understand MMORPGs rely on heavy communication; and same language communication is a must. This isn't exactly the case, and even so; We're six people (an entire team) playing; thus, we all speak spanish within our team. it's in the pre-game lobbies where this occurs.

It likely comes down to the assumption of anonymity that people feel comes with the use of the internet. It's been a really long time since I used XBLive, so if you can do things like set up Spanish speaker only channels I wouldn't know. I killed my own XBL account and chose to go with XBconnect, and kai. You still encounter the same folks, but at least this time around I'm not paying to be exposed to such ignorant people.

It would be a lie to say that all the hate and vitriol some of them spew is unfounded and undeserved. I'll grant 98% of the people you'd meet in X-Box Live aren't impacted negatively by illegal immigration in their everyday lives. There are a few things that drive some of the more vocal, legitimate people to being unpleasant douchebags to people of different sorts.

I don't share their viewpoints, or most of their personal experiences, but I could possibly shed some light on their perspectives and where they're coming from.

Your average native US citizen:
Speaks English
Pays Income tax, among other taxes.
Makes too much to benefit from social services. As well, the state is so poor they can scarcely afford it. Not using social services and picking yourselves up by bootstraps being a matter of pride.
Is on a budget, with maybe 1 or 2 children since they can't afford more.
Needs any job they can get in this economy
Goes to and graduates from low budget schools, be they rural or urban.

Your average illegal immigrant:
Speaks not-English. And yet they seem to get jobs that require communication with English speakers, while not being required to speak it themselves. And in fact, law enforcement is required to read the person their rights in their language, or it's a false arrest and they're set free.
Does not pay US taxes unless you count sales tax.
Reaps the benefit of social services. Visual, dental and medical for their numerous kids, fuel expenses paid for.
Are on less of a budget, since they don't pay taxes and their utilities/medical expenses go to the taxpayers.
Get the hard, low pay jobs. But this is compensated by the lack of taxes and the benefit of compassion services from the government.
(children) tend to drop out of school and then become problematic. (robberies, drugs, etc.)


In the eyes of the locals, they're paying the hefty taxes for the standard of living enjoyed by other people, and these other people that don't pay into the system yet take full advantage of medical and fuel. And just to prevent an increase in gang activity and crime rate, the kids these illegals make get preferential treatment in job opportunities. To top it all off, they don't even make an attempt to assimilate and au contraire, expect the locals to accommodate their language (Spanish, in this case. Other areas, the language du jour is different.)

Who wants a neighbor that invites themselves over, turns your heat up, uses your toothbrush and contacts, then refuses to communicate with you unless you address them in -their- language? And then acts like you're the gringo in your own house. And then to top it all off, steals something from their sons/daughters room once in awhile. Because they can't afford it themselves.

They're expressing their frustrations in a very unhelpful way, but have you ever been so pissed off that you start swinging a cactus around?

As far as i know, they get no healthcare or welfare of any kind; mainly because you need to be registered as a physical contributor (generating taxes; which you claim they don't).

Even in a country as undeveloped as mine this is a rule and it's followed.

Also, know that Income tax is unconstitutional and it can be appealed with no problem whatsoever in court. You don't need to pay income tax; because there is no law that institutes it.

You'd be surprised at the english rate of immigrant's kids (in the case of being born in the US). They mostly learn both languages, and handle english as a main. If by preferential you mean "because they're known to work" i agree.

Also, Your analogy is one sided, but i don't blame you; i'd say it's more of a neighbor that started fixing your stuff, ended up accomodating itself and using what you could offer to him and ends up stealing because you don't pay him for his services. he got comfortable and now you want him out. You know, I've never bothered researching the legality of the income tax beyond that brief stint by Libertarians to try and circumvent it a few years ago. I can't really have an opinion on it one way or another until I actually research it. I haven't.

Now, the illegal ones part of the drug trafficking business are *not* bringing high value currency. At least, not the kind that helps the economy, certainly not our economy and not the local economy. You could say they bring a little Spring Break to the hopeless tweakers across the US of A, but I'd hardly call that a fair trade. A few condoms and aluminum cans in the oceans is a little less dangerous to people than a bunch of tweakers roaming the highways of America. Anything negative that could be said of spring breakers on alcohol is but a fraction of what could be said about heroin, coke and meth abuse.

While it's by no means a majority of them out there, a good portion of the young American individuals that dedicate to online FPS gaming tend to be of the same mentality that make up the trolls of the chan boards and internet in general. It's grown from creative trash talking to just the lowest standard for annoying and infuriating people out there; honestly for no good reason whatsoever. And, like with the internet, since they're miles away, they feel that they can say anything without repercussions. And with current neo-conservative movements in America, these sentiments have become even more pronounced in recent years.
The short of it: they're pissant dicks of trolls.

That said, people are right when they say many Americans need to get their heads out of our collective ego-centric ass, but fortunately it's not all of us, and most of us are only this bad when being directly competitive.
