Actually, Onta's contest was less FOCUSED on the character being FTM and more on their personality. :T most of the entries were folks trying to juice every animu cross dressing cliche into a character they could brightly dress up to over work the fact they were hiding what gender they were born into.

/:T Onta never even said the character was going to be used in porn just assumed that way by most of the angry people. So, alotta barking and finger waving happened but all these offended people didn't enter the contest to show what a GOOD FTM character could be and so ... yeah.

The main issue was that most of the people entering that contest did so with no respect to the transgender community, and Onta himself continuiously referred to the FTM characters as "her". It was as bad, if not worse, as Erika Moen's "TRANS GUYS ARE HOT BCUZ THEY ARENT REAL GUYS" comic. The worst part was when he validated himself by saying WELL LOOK HERE ARE SOME TRANS COMMENTERS WHO DON'T SEE THE ISSUE, meanwhile so many people DID see the issue, but simply knew he wouldn't care/was too insensitive to our struggle that he wouldn't see the issue.

I have a friend who is transgendered and I know all about that side of things (obviously not as much as somebody who actually has the condition, but as much as a cis-person can relate) and I understand the body dysphoria thing. However, she would have hated to be identified as trans- at all... she merely wanted to be a girl. Her largest fear was that somebody would figure out that she was born in the wrong body.

Maybe somebody needs to come up with some sort of other word for the fetish bits because those folks sure do qualify as trans and genderqueer, they just are at a different side of the spectrum from my friend, where who they are is somewhere more in the middle of the gender road and less at either end.

The issue I have with fetishizing transsexuals in pornography is the same issue I have with any porn aimed at your typical male; it is unrealistic and often shows way too much ... mysogony, I suppose you could say. Buck Angel, I LOVE. He's awesome, he's empowering, and I think he is a downright amazing person- and he is a trans guy who acts in porn. But the thing about him, he does porn everyone can enjoy... I think it's hard for me to explain my stance on porn because I believe veiwing pornography is a healthy thing for a person or for a couple! Sexuality is important to MANY PEOPLE... but when half the porn you see is on the verge of VIOLENT towards women or the transfolk that might star in them, well... Then I take issue with it.

The key to this is respect. To us 'tranny' is an offensive and transphobic word. I can count many words that 'mainstream' transsexual porn uses that are considered hateful, offensive, transphobic. In fact, Buck Angel is the only person I can think of who does pornography which is not only "for everyone" (who would of course, enjoy it), but is also respectful.

For the record, I had the same fears as your friend when I was first discovering my gender 'issues' I suppose we could say. Maybe she will forever want to hide the fact that she was born with the wrong parts. If so, that's her choice and all the power to her! It's especially helpful if she finds she can pass easily (I certainly cannot... :C), and I wish her much luck in it. Over time, I myself grew to embrace my trans/genderqueer status.

I guess the thing that got me to speak up is it seemed that you were very anti-trans porn from your earlier statements "no right to profit from it", "if she had any respect for us she would have cancelled the contest", etc. I mean, if I want to make upstanding female-empowerment porn, I'm free to do so, but I'm also free to make trashy misogynistic porn. But what of women who want to be seen as sex objects, or who consent to not-consenting? Fetishes are interesting spaces because they allow us to express aspects of our sexualities that would otherwise Not Ever Be Okay. Like I am completely against real rape, but in a controlled, consenting, sane sort of situation, simulations can be titillating.

In another direction, some women are BDSM "lifestylers", where their dom/master tells them what to wear everyday, takes the money they earn from their job, and they generally live out the (imho hellish) life that women had of no control or consent for thousands of years before women's rights came along. They love it though, and wouldn't trade it for the world. I totally do not understand and my kneejerk is to find it a bit offensive - but it is their right to live in this way.

It takes all kinds - this is why I tend to err on the side of live and let live, I've gotten into heated debates with folks who have told me I am somehow damaged or evil for taking pleasure in consent play because it "reinforces negative stereotypes about women". Frankly I used to look up to Erika Moen. She was a cool girl who embraced her gender and her sexuality and did so in a non offensive way to those of other walks of life. She spoke out about sexuality being OK (I myself have no interest in it, but frankly, it is a message that does need to be out there!!), she made it okay to be 'gross'...

Not to say I do not believe that people do not have the right to be what they wish, and that perhaps she was not a lesbian but simply was a bisexual who felt more comfort in a lesbian identity, I DON'T KNOW, I am not her- the fact is, she completely pushed a very powerful, proud lesbian image, and then turns around and decides that she is totally going to marry a man and that's A OK. No explanation, no nothing. It is her personal life, sure, but she kept that personal life quite public in her art and comics, and I feel that as a result, she owed her fans, especially young lesbians who looked up to her as a role model, an explanation of 'Okay so maybe I did not fully understand my sexuality" etc- Nobody's perfect, and hell, it would be understandable. But the way she went from "GUYS I'M A LESBIAN THIS IS SO AWESOME YOU SHOULD BE PROUD IF YOU'RE A LESBIAN" to "marrying boys is keen" without any kind of explanation of her own feelings.... well, Maybe I'm just a little bit hurt because the woman I looked up to as a role model turned out to be like this, but that is my take on it. :X

Yeah, pansexual has always meant (I've assumed) to mean you're attracted to WHO a person is, not what's in their pants. I mean, I identify as pansexual and I just...don't have a real clear gender preference. I mean, yeah, I like /looking/ at boys as girls, but as for /dating/ someone, I would rather be with someone who has an amazing personality and I can trust over whether or not they have a penis or a vagina.

My preference towards "manly" women leans more towards birls- petite women with very little to no chest, who dress and act androgynously. "Manly" women I think is a terrible term as it kind of implies negativity. Well, pansexual doesn't mean you have to be attracted to all the different styles of boy or girl and etc... it's more a catchall for people who don't feel bisexual is broad enough for them. A lot of that is due to drag/cross-dressing/effeminacy, as some feel bisexual implies a liking for traditional types (for some reason). Others use it to denote that they like trans people of some type, since that doesn't really fit into straight, gay or bi. Others use it as a safe way to say their into bestiality or fantasy creatures (even though furry already sort of implies the later, and xenophile would be a better fit anyway). Others are just honest about stating their attraction to a person/thing is predicated upon how much they care about it.

I'm not aware of a term for favoring gender-bending... and I wish I did, because it sounds like we've got very similar tastes. Girls can't be too masculine and guys can't be too girly, for me. Anyway, if there isn't a term out there for it we should work on coming up with one.

I was under the impression pansexual is used to define people whose sexual preference is not limited by standard gender boundaries. That is, they are attracted to people regardless of their gender and can find sexual/emotional fulfillment with someone of any gender or sex be they male, female, trans, or any other possible permutation to that effect. It's not so much about androgyny as it is about a sexual preference for ALL types of people.

Pansexuality isn't some ideal state and you're bad for limiting your scope of sexual partners, it's just a preference like any other. A preference for, well, anyone.

Also, that's not to imply that pansexuality is a complete lack of preference. Someone who is pansexual might prefer redheads over blondes, or surfer types over skinny types, or flat-chested over busty. The distinction is that pansexuals have the potential to be attracted to people of all genders or sexes.

Hah, and I'm not sure what that might be called. Maybe androgynophilia (although a quick Google search brings that up as an alternative label for bisexuality :\)? More of a fetish, I would imagine.

Pansexuality seems like some sort of over-idealistic dream world to me. People who have NO physical preferences at all and only love the SOUL of another person or whatever. Haha I can't even imagine that. I want to look at my partner's body and be turned on. Admittedly I have pretty similar tastes, I like girly boys and tomboy girls who are willing to play both dominant and submissive roles in a relationship. But I just consider myself bisexual, because I DO have physical preferences. I think pansexuality is really cool for the people who actually are that way. A whole ... peace and love mentality that allows you to love anyone, but I wonder how many people are TRULY that way.

I'll say right off I hate neologisms and labels in general. I have a fairly specific preference, but I don't know what I'd call it, or what I'd call the person who fits it, and I don't let it bother me. I lucked out in that the person I ended up with was a perfect fit, but regardless of what's between their legs they're smart, sweet, caring, and altogether wonderful. I would have fallen head over heels no matter what.

It does crack me up when people refer to a character in one of my drawings as a "he" or a "she" because I don't get specific . . . man, have they been wrong a lot of the times. But like you said, I would hate to only become known as a 'fetish' artist, so I mostly keep it to myself.

Being FtM transgender, I personally don't mind being addressed as a 'tranny' or as 'male'. As long as one weren't to address me as female, I am sure I would be fine given the respect or tone behind it isn't to be an ass. It's moreso "respect me, and I will respect you" in my books.

Sexuality is a complicated thing, I think a lot of people are raised to look down or judge a sexuality differently from another these days. It upsets me to know a few individuals close to me having such a strong disgust towards anyone who isn't "straight". To each their own, I suppose.

I'm still questioning being pansexual these days; I feel more strongly attracted to biomen, although I'm finding I could fall in love with a friend (who happens to be a biowomen). I suppose it's all on the personality I fall in love with, rather than the body.

Pansexuality, in my eyes, is simply having no general preference to the sex or physical body, but the personality and individual beneath it.

Just to let you know, a lot of people can get really offended by the term "bio-wo/man" because it implies that trans* people are not "biologically" male or female when really, there is no way to determine "biological" sex in humans without extensive testing, and even then, a lot of things are up for debate. Sex and gender in humans is incredibly complex. The currently accepted term is cis-gender or cis-sexual; cis- being the opposite of trans-.
