Last I checked there were zombies, skeletons, giant spiders and creepers, which are these big green gumby-looking fools who explode when they get near to you. Also, sheep and pigs, which provide wool and pork. There's a day/night cycle, and monsters only spawn at night or in the darkness of the caves. Right, yeah, there's dynamic lighting. Deep caves are pitch black even during the day.

So yeah, basically, you have to craft tools. Beat down a tree with your bare hands to get wood to make a crafting station, then a wooden axe to chop trees faster so you have enough wood for handles, chests, etc. Then a wooden pick to get enough stone to make a STONE pick so you can dig faster and find coal so you can make torches, which you need to see and to prevent monsters from spawning, so you can dig deeper and look for iron so you can make better picks and armor and weapons.

Also, the world is more or less infinitely large. And every block of dirt and rock you destroy gets added to your inventory, but your inventory is limited so you need to make chests to hold stuff, and then you can build stuff with all the material you mined out. And there are mine carts now! You can use iron and wood to make little tracks for the carts to follow and they're kind of pointless right now except for the sheer fun of it, but I think they're supposed to eventually act like portable chests so you can transport large amounts of stuff from deep mines up to the surface.

And you don't need to eat, but you do need to make food to restore health. Pork can be cooked in ovens, you can make mushroom stew, and oh yeah there's farming now, you till grass with a hoe to get seeds, then plant them to grow wheat or something, which you cook to make bread.

This actually sounds kinda fun.

Well ... I think I've actually had more fun in creative multiplayer. But of course the two are very different games, and survival is still incomplete. Once multiplayer is added it'll be a lot more interesting.
