I think that's pretty accurate, I see a lot of people with avatars which look like them and it begs the question of why?.

Remember when you were a kid and you [or a friend] wanted to be a fireman, cop, ballerina, superman, batman, pirate etc? well in SL you can be *anything* you like, and people choose to be *normal*, isn't there something wrong with that?

Did something die when most people grew up?

Heck, I've seen some sims with "fly" turned off because it's "abnormal".

Who wants to be normal? I certainly don't.
