Question: have you ever noticed how much the number 40 comes up in the Bible? like for instance the 40 days and nights of Noah's ark or how Moses spent 40 days and nights on Mt.Sinai transcribing the commandments, the Hebrews spent 40 years traveling in the desert.
is there like something about the number 40 that makes it used in the Bible so much?

Answer: The number 40 appears many times in the bible. Form the 40 days of Noah, the 40 days in the wilderness with Moses, the 40 days of Moses on the mount, the forty days of Jesus' testing, it also appears several times within several of the rules of kings and within the several of the books of the prophets. Numbers in the bible have often been researched by both Christian and Jewish scholars for centuries. Many numbers have specific meaning and references in their use, thus the repetition of them throughout scripture. In simple terms for the number 40, it signifies a time of trial, probation, or chastisement. Many scholars who study the numerology have come up with various meanings for all sorts of numbers and even put numbers together to for observations on OTHER numbers used throughout. For instance, the number 40 is gotten to by multiplying the numbers 5 and 8. The number 5 is taken to reference to grace, the number 8 is for revival or renewal. Thus for instance, in getting to the number 40, a time of trial is an act of grace which leads to a renewal. For instance, the 40 years lost in the wilderness. God showed his grace to the Israelites by having them wander in order to test their willingness to accept his covenant. At the end of the 40 years, the people became renewed in their commitment to the Lord, and thus were given final permission to enter into the promised land. This is but one example of the different numbers associated with various meanings within scripture. If you want some more information, I suggest trying out several bible-study websites that deal with it. this site is a pretty good one to start out with...

Also the local bookstores should have some good books on the subject in the mysticism and kabbalah sections. A good one, which is the one I have is Biblical Numerology by John J. Davis
I hope this is satisfactory enough of an answer. Point Neon to that website if he wanted to learn more.

Opps! O just noticed a slight error I made in my reply! Where is says they were in the wilderness for 40 days with Moses, it should be 40 YEARS. I guess i need to proofread a bit more before I hit the send button. Thanks again for the question.
