Can we imagine it as a catastrophic application of a microwave pain cannon? Fuck tazer tech,.. where are all the tools of oppression we are more globally assosciated with at times likes these?
While he did no harm and all the hostages escaped alive and unharmed, he was gunned down and killed.
Why doesn't anyone utilize tranq darts on people like this? Is it just cheaper to kill the man and award some cop a fucking medal for murdering someone who was unstable? Now we'll never know if the man had any psychological issues that could have be resolved.
And I had no idea there was a movement/organization for the mass extinction of humanity. You learn something new everyday.
From what I've seen of darts used on wildlife, they're far from instant. So...while he's confused, enraged and going down, that's plenty of time to shoot hostages or detonate a bomb. Its ashame he's dead and doesn't get to stand trial (assuming he was found fit for trial), but lethal force is the safest and most effective way to protect hostages.
On the other hand, he at least died a little closer to his wish. The human population has been reduced just a eensie teensie bit.
Don't work fast enough, and are more likely to not work or work too well. Believe it or not, the lawsuit over tranking him and having him die would be far worse than from shooting him with lead. If he was shot, it was because at that moment he was shot someone was in immediate jeopardy of receiving death or great bodily harm... and being armed and having planted several explosive devices, sounds like he was ready to.
I didn't see it mentioned that he planted explosives. Hmm, that makes a little more sense, even though I still don't feel allowing law enforcement to be the executioner. While others potentially were saved by murdering this guy, I feel who ever killed him ought to suffer under the laws as well. Cops aren't above the law and shooting someone to defend someone else is still murder.
This is true. Cops aren't above the law. Fortunately, using lethal force to protect others during a stand off is quite legal.
It should be noted that when the police do you use lethal force and neutralize the danger...and then discover that the dangerous person is still alive, they don't walk up and shoot the fallen in the head. They call an ambulance. When the scene is secure, the paramedics get to come in and do their best to save lives.
I learned a little more about this incident, and apparently he had explosives strapped to his body. There's very little option there. There is no way to 100% render him incapable of triggering that bomb without hurting him. In fact, the most reliable way to stop him from triggering that bomb is to destroy the medulla oblongata, the part of the brain that controls motor function. Destroy this, and it's like switching off a light- the person ceases all function. I don't believe this happened in this case, but there you go- you're facing an unstable person with a bomb who could trigger it and kill a lot of other people, including yourself... how do you stop him? It's not with tranquilizers or a taser. I consider it unfortunate that this man lost his life, but I do not consider it murder in any way, shape, or form.
I'm sorry if I'm turning this into a debate, Muley; it just caught my eye. I'll shut up now.
Wait wait wait. I am all for not brutalizing the fluffy bunnies either,.. but lets examine this a bit. Tranq darts have a number of properties assosciated with them. One is that they take time to take effect, Some others is that they are short ranged,.. have time of flight considerations, and require an exacting ratio of active ingredient to body mass. And most importantly,.. delivery might end up getting wasted against a bone, into a muscle mass, or emptied into a body cavity.
Why would that be an inappropriate selection for the task? The crazy has a gun,.. and he has hostages. The simple dictates of mortal struggle,.. and the lethal force employed by the police,... are entirely appropriate as a legitimate effective methodology of dealing with the emergency situation,... at least more so than tranqing him like a specimen and hoping that he wont perforate those under the hammer of his weapon.
at the very least as a precedent long established the guy should have known going into those circumstances that getting killed would be the likely outcome.
Glad to hear that the hostages are all safe. Sad the guy won't be able to stand trial, but he deserved to get shot if he was putting someone in danger during the rescue.
Gotta love some of his demands, though. "And next up, on 'Wheel of Conservation...' " =P
A friend linked me to this in IRC.
His demands are just...lulzy. As much as I hate to laugh at something as horrible as a hostage situation.
Sure, Discovery channel can totally fix the unemployment issue. Let's just go ahead and get rid of global warming while we're at it. Hell, at this rate we'll solve the energy crisis by noon!
Were all planeteers! you can be one too! because saving the planet's the thing to do! goooo captain planet! I don't know why.. but this whole affair has reminded me of that cartoon.
If his one single demand was to not air that stupid Sarah Palin show that was supposed to air, I might have had a bit of sympathy for him.
Just a bit, though, because his methods are way too extreme for me to actually want him to succeed. I'd prefer if they did it of their own volition, to be honest.
5. Immigration: Programs must be developed to find solutions to stopping ALL immigration pollution and the anchor baby filth that follows that. Find solutions to stopping it. Call for people in the world to develop solutions to stop it completely and permanently. Find solutions FOR these countries so they stop sending their breeding populations to the US and the world to seek jobs and therefore breed more unwanted pollution babies. FIND SOLUTIONS FOR THEM TO STOP THEIR HUMAN GROWTH AND THE EXPORTATION OF THAT DISGUSTING FILTH! (The first world is feeding the population growth of the Third World and those human families are going to where the food is! They must stop procreating new humans looking for nonexistant jobs!)
Lame. I was expecting a gunfight like in the Philippines.
o well.
America has all those tazer weaponry after all.

So, you just cap the son of a bitch and move on.

Sounds more alike a thinly veiled racial thing.
