Presented by Yours F. Truly at Eurofurence 16 in Magdeburg, Germany in September 2010.
In this workshop we discuss the notion of conveying meaning through imagery. The theory of semiotics is briskly breezed through, after which we look at some examples of evocative imagery in art and writing. Finally, we did a little mini Bullwer-Lytton contest, with some thoughtful and/or hilarious results!
Apologies for the darkness in the first half. The camera lost focus in the dark a few times, but really came into its element once the lights came back on.
This panel was a ton of fun to do, with a diverse and engaged audience, which included Elfasi, Watts Martin, Lupestripe and a fair few others I'm sure I forgot to name!

On top of that, very cool job putting together that video. Your inserts made the lessons more clear and kept the visuals changing at a good pace. Nice zooms on the stills. Ken Burns would be proud.
Though I have to ask-- was all of that sound from the camera mic?
Thanks for your kind words! I'd obviously have loved to have you there too, but such is life. I'm pleased I can share a recording at any rate. It was an absolute delight.
And yes, all the sound was the camera mic! I'd set up a Zoom H4 as well, but try as I might I couldn't make its recording sync up with the camera (it was a fraction of a percent slower, which is hard to fudge over 90-odd minutes) and I'd stupidly clipped the lavalier to my waistcoat, so it was a mess of clothes rustle.
The best audio came from the camera, so I maxed out the volume in iMovie, then imported the video into Garageband, and applied some compression and hiss removal. I love how integrated the iLife apps are; once I'd exported the video to the Media Browser from iMovie it was accessible in-place from Garageband, and I could export the final video from there.
Shame the start was so dark and blurry, but it was a ton of fun to do and I'm glad you enjoyed :)
I'm going to hazard a guess that your Zoom was recording at 44.1k? The video camera should have been recording at 48k, and unless iMovie has got a smart SRC, that can lead to a lot of sound drift. There's also the potential pull-down issues synching to video, though you Europeans with your fancy PAL format shouldn't have to worry about that! (As an American, I'm constantly looking for 0.03% synch issues.) Either way, I do have a fancy SRC, so if you want, I'd be happy to try fixing that drift for you.
That blurry start just adds more mystery. It was still every bit as engaging without hard focus.
