My contract at work is coming to an end in about 3 weeks, which means that once again, I'll be out of a job and on unemployment benefits. So to support my income a little bit, I've decided to consider taking commissions for knifemaking.
Now, let me start by saying I am *NOT* a professional, however I *WILL* be charging very very competative prices. From what I understand so far, sending knives worldwide via registered mail is perfectly safe and legal, but I'll be going down the local post office and asking their advice.
What I'm looking for right now is interest. I've got a few examples of my work up in my gallery, and I'll be adding another one over the next few days once I pull my finger out and take some damned pictures of the thing. If you think you'd at least be INTERESTED in buying a custom-made knife from me, let me know. I'm going to put up some pictures of the choices of wood for the handles, and also the MANY different blades that are available.
All the knives I have made so far are tools. They are for working with. However, I will also be accepting commissions to make knife stands or displays, but these will *NOT* be cheap, and will only be accepted on a case-by-case basis, depending on availability of materials, complexity, etc. One thing that will be made available is hand-made storage boxes - small wooden boxes with a hinged lid, fabric lining and an indentation to keep your blade secure within. I don't know about locking them yet, but that can also be discussed if you want them.
Prices again will vary, but to give you an idea of how much of a good deal this is, let me break it down for you.
Average blade cost - around $40
Average rare hardwood blank cost - around $40
Normal length of time to spend working on a single knife- several days, including prepping and drying times. Pure linseed oil takes at least 8 hours to dry.
My normal hourly rate for hire - about $10
.....
Average price per handmade knife?
$150
Obviously, prices will HAVE to vary depending on what sort of knife you want, and if you want any extras. But I'm not counting extra materials costs, things like the super-hard epoxy resin I use to secure the blades into the handles. Things like the MASSIVE amounts of different grades of sandpaper I'd need, and the special application material for the hard protective coating.
Shipping will be worked out individually based on where you are, but once I get this up and running I'll make a commission application form, so you can give me all the details I'll need to give an accurate quote.
So... who'd be interested?
Oh.... and please, PLEASE tell your friends!

Before I open the commission slots in around 4 weeks, I will be providing an up-to-date list on materials and blade styles available, since there are MANY.
If you would be genuinely interested in getting a custom knife from me, feel free to send me a note detailing what you'd like.
Payments will all need to be via paypal.

If you knew how to forge, I Have a blade here I want made into a knife but it requires both heat treatment and sharpened as its a blank.
It's a shame, but at least with the brusletto blades, I can promise my customers affordable high quality, and reliability.
I have a selection of roughly 20 different blade styles, including 'traditional' half-moon skinning blades. I'm spoiled for choice when it comes to them really. And they don't come for anywhere near as cheap as 12-26 bucks, I have to admit. They are all at least double that. But the cost is clearly worth it. I've used these blades for everything from field dressing game to de-limbing willow trees. Compared to even a Mora blade, these things are a vast improvement over a shop-bought knife.
As for the sanding the backs down, on the two shorter 8cm blades there, they are carving handles, designed to be used in both a forward and 'pull' grip, the small, shallow quillon on the spine is designed to allow the user to maintain control and grip while applying greater pressure than if they were pressing directly on the spine.
I use knives daily, it's part of my job, so these were designed and made specifically for the tasks I use them for, with the exception of the pink one which was a commission for someone who wanted a version of the leopard knife, only 'more girly' XD
The other problem for me is that I live and work in Iceland, in a town with less than 20,000 inhabitants. We get taxed 30% on all imports, unless from specific suppliers, like mine in Norway. So I can't buy materials from the US directly, it's cheaper to have my supplier purchase them, then send them on to me. Which is a little scary! ^^
Thank you for your kind comments and advice though, it's always nice to see someone who likes my work!
cheers and keep up the rough work "if there were a thumbs up to go with this mug I'd give it"
just look up the site and have a good hardy laugh!
If you check out the site at http://sicarius-studios.webs.com/ I've set up a form where you can get a quote from me. Or you can use the contact page to ask any questions you want, it all gues straight to my inbox.
I always check out FA though, so you're just as likely to catch me on here - it's worth bearing in mind though that it can take quite a while to handmake a knife to measure, and then get it sent off, so make sure you leave plenty of time for it to get there.
I love working on projects that will end up a gift for someone, so I really hope you get the chance to make an order from me!
i enjoy both display and working blades i comend your skill and time put into making these its a skill i wish i had >< but yeah would love to work out a trade and i'd be more than willing to do a couple full pieces for you your talent is definately worth it and frankly i'm honored you would like work from me =)
