To pay for commissions all up front, or not.

Just read an exchange in an artist's journal between them and a dopey 'expert' commissioner. It was painful to wade through, but it did remind me of a decision I made awhile back.
I don't want to commission an artist again by paying everything up front. Half up front, half on delivery of the finished piece is reasonable from my point of view.
I've been burned by artists before too many times to give them the benefit of the doubt anymore. I haven't commissioned much art in my time with furrydom, and yet I'm out roughly 300 dollars from the ones who never delivered.
I realize that this will bar me from a large number of artists who've established clear guidelines on the commission process. I accept that, and won't try to argue the matter with them; I'll just go elsewhere.
(This only concerns commissions that cost more than fifty dollars, by the way. Splitting the payment for a conbadge would be pretty silly.)
I certainly don't want to offend anyone with this post, but I wanted the few artists who might read it to see the perspective of a commissioner who has been mistreated by artists to the point of having to make a policy like this. Is it a small percentage of the whole who cheat and lie to their customers? Yes. That doesn't make a small measure of safety unreasonable.

I'm picturing you at a car-race in the stands, freaking out with car-joy, while I steal T-shirt cannons to adapt for Nerf warfare. ;K)

I don't take any money until I'm done. Keeps me motivated to do a good job. This could lead to problems for some people, but I'm a bit selctive about accecpting commissions in the first place, so I haven't had any problems.

See, that could certainly be problematic too. Now that a lot of artwork is digital and never even printed out, one could say that artists' costs have gone down, and getting stiffed on a commission isn't as serious. But the time involved is still the key, and you can never get that time back. But as you say, if you're really selective about who you take commissions from, you cut down on your chances of getting burned.

There are artists I work with frequently who I will pay up front. If I've never worked with an artist before, I'll front them half the money and pay the rest upon receipt.

That makes sense. But familiarity breeds contempt. Get too close to an artist, and it's possible they'll take advantage of your friendship to delay delivery. Had that happen twice so far.

It's happened to Mystee and I as well, though the artists that did it mostly didn't know how to properly manage queue size.

No way I'm ever paying upfront again. It seems like half the art I commission ends up never delivered, even sometimes when I order it at a con and talk to the artist in person! Many artists who are actually reliable don't even ask for it upfront.

Best part of paying half-up-front, half-at-finish, if I'm totally wowed by the finished piece, I add a little extra as a bonus/tip. Artists who demand everything up front don't get that.
