Ahh, the censorship leniency of that era. *sigh* The bygone days before PC

It's ridiculous, they'll censor the stupidest things and yet leave the real crap wide open. I have a list of all the things that got pulled from cartoons made in the original looney tunes and things like that. It's mind boggling how something was fine for 20-30 years, then in this generation, people get huffy and try to sue warner brothers

I actually wrote a paper on cartoon censorship for a class I took on censorship in American cinema. It was amusing how much stuff we took for granted as kids is now consider severely non-kosher to air. Not to mention how much this generation doesn't know what black-face is because of all those gags being removed.

That's exactly what I was talking about when I said the above comment but I didn't know if actually pointing that one out as being one of the removed ones would be kosher (censorship has gotten to even me) they also removed the spanish mouse for awhile, changed pepe, took out the way down south episodes, lots of things...

Yeah, Speedy Gonzalez's "lazy Mexican" friends are no more. Also, china-man gags that show up in Tom and Jerry a lot are gone. I had no idea they even removed some Native American gags. I also found out they've changed the skin color AND voice of Tom and Jerry's "Mammy." She WAS black, but since she was an old stereotype, they changed her, too.

I think that if we censor things too much, it'll eventually lead to exploding rebellion, instead of keeping a healthy balance of people not taking those things too seriously. Another reason why we get so many lawsuits over stupid things, people are too sensitive these days

Yep and not to mention parents avoiding teaching their kids right from wrong and fact from fiction.

I'm totally against going back into old cartoons and editing them, or banning them because their content is too 'damaging'.

Yeah, I've seen 2 in person. He's got some good rants, and at the time, another one of his kid related rants was how they don't let kids play around anymore on playgrounds both fun and dangerous. Steel belt tire swings, rocks and splintery wood cuttings for gravel, etc. I agree that in THAT sense, parents are too over protective. And if they keep censoring things too much, like the above said, a child will never learn the difference between right or wrong and won't know how to protect itself from truly dangerous things.

So, I'm in total agreement with you.

Oh BOY is this a subject close to my heart!! I too have a lot of uncensored stuff (Both animated and live-action) on tape,and hopefully I'll be able to convert them to DVD before they deteriorate......For a brief (VERY brief) period in the early to mid-90s,both TBS and TNT grew some balls and ran classic Looney Tunes,MGM cartoons,Popeyes,etc. Uncut....They've even tried to ban outright the old "Our Gang" comedies and the TV version of "Amos and Andy"......Okay...I'm going to conclude with a little myth-debunking about some of this stuff...and I KNOW whereof I speak,because I GREW UP watching a lot of it in the ancient past,B.C. (Before Cable).....The "Our Gang" comedies(still one of my all-time favorites) were NOT RACIST!! If anything they were AHEAD of their time in showing kids of different races being pals and having fun together......The TV version of "Amos and Andy" was NOT RACIST....It was basically "The Honeymooners" with a black cast...and a damn fine bunch of actors who might not otherwise have gotten such a showcase at that time...."The Lone Ranger" was NOT RACIST....despite the unfortunate fact that Jay Silverheels (Tonto) did have to speak in a rather ridiculous dialect,The Lone Ranger NEVER treated Tonto as his "servant" or his "boy"...They were lifelong friends and equals...in fact,I can't think of two BETTER role models for boys(something we sorely need these days) than the Lone Ranger and Tonto.....and finally,I can show you example after example of how,back in the supposedly "Unenlightened" 1950s,popular characters such as Superman,Captain Video and Captain Midnight were admonishing kids that prejudice and bigotry were "UnAmerican" along with countless other worthy lessons on being helpful to Mom and Dad,having good study habits,being good citizens in your community,etc. and so on........
