Commissions go for HOW much?

Guaranteed to put you to sleep faster than Ben Stein reading the periodical table of elements!
I'm a dinosaur of the furry era. A relic. One of the originals. I go to conventions but I only passively keep up with FA. Someone in my old circles told me today that 2 character, full color pictures sell for around $80 these days???? Is that TRUE? Or only for popular furries with patreons and followers and all of that such? I mean obviously the famous furries have always been able to earn more, but just in general? o_O Do I need to get back in the game?
And glad to hear you still kicking Sharra :D
..
WHAT
OMFG. Back in the late 90's / early 00's, that was absolutely unthinkable. Around 2005ish, there was ONE time I saw an Adam Wan "I will literally draw anything" commission go over $600 before the auction started winding down, but I'm floored to hear that. Good heavens. I go to the local Texas furry convention every year (except for COVID disruptions) but I haven't actively hung out with furries not from my original circles in years. Mercy.
Idk as far as cut throat and competitive, I've been out of the game for a long time. There's also the whole market saturation thing.
I've seen (and acquired) single character flat or full color pieces for $60-80, so yes, that's true, and it's not just the popufurs.
We're also seeing a lot of Your Character Here stuff that's taking numbers like that, as well.
Supposedly there are SO MANY artists here that you can find cheaper artists here if you want.
She has a journal entry at the top of her profile with prices. I could never afford to commission her, but when you consider the quality of her work and the mediums she uses. WOW! Like you, I've been aware of her since the good ol' VCL days. As awesome as her work was back then, (her VCL gallery is still there), it's improved off the charts, imho, since those days. Since she uses traditional media, that cost has to go into the commission prices, so unlike with digital artists, her work probably garners a fair bit less than the actual commission price. Once the materials cost comes out that is. Other artists I watch who also do YCH auctions are quite popular and can sometimes pull in $100-$200 for a single image YCH, even though they work digitally. Makes me wish I were better at drawing anthros. lol
I commissioned one user about 8 years ago for my character. It's digital work and I think it was around $60. lol It's been 8 years so I don't remember exactly. I'm surprised it wasn't more, because that artist had been around for ages doing commissions and posting awesome stuff, also on VCL at one time, but, the commission was for a digital painting, not a traditional work. So I'm glad I got the price I did, especially for the quality of work she did.
ANYWAY, so yeah, in these times of craziness and crazy price-inflation, you might consider returning to drawing and offering commissions! Things are too tight for me to commission you or anyone, but I would certainly enjoy seeing you post here again, especially more art.
Hope you are well.
I seriously doubt any of this stuff is selling. People are just falling prey to "the banker's solution" (ie, if you're not making enough money, just raise prices). Sorry, but there's no reason to believe that furry art is worth the equivalent rate of $200/hr.
On top of that, at least half the submissions and journals I get these days are just spam. Nobody seems to treat furry like a hobby anymore. It's really turned me off to buying any commissions these days.
I price it by hour worked! And it's still no longer near the industry standard (much higher priced). I basically take minimum wage and double or triple it, so it comes out to about $20/hour!

Like, here's some pricing for an industry professional magazine illustration:

And it's not because I'm a popufur! It's because I realized I burnt out many years ago working for way less than minimum wage even back then.
